volvo f88

phantom:
The first F10’s were 278bhp and Volvo completley re designed the engine from the 290 because the 290 F88 was a modified version of the 240 because the 330 F89 was not available in right hand drive, the reliabillty of the 290 was questionable compared to the 240. they re vamped the F10 /F12 on V reg and put the 257 load lugger engine in the 10 and it was a big balls up, the idea was to let the engine lugg like the old gardner but it was gut less and would not pull the skin of a rice pudding, they had some on hercocks with coach diffs they would cruise comfortably at 70 but dropped off terrible when they came to a hill.
The F12 had the 305 and a 335, I had a 305 on Kinches and in its day a very powerfull truck nothing would catch it, because of the disasterous 257 volvo quickley had a re vamp of the F10 / F12 because of the sudden lack of sales and came up with the 299 bhp F10 intercooler and the 385 intercooler F12
One of the best volvo’s was the F88 continental spec 260 bhp a real flying machine and so reliable.

Would that be this one? VRY 207X Dave Speke (Grandad) drove the other one, VRY 206X. I drove 207 until Ken got rid!

Jimsky. Love the idea of you making an Oryx model!

I have looked through my pictures but I don’t have too much that will help you but here they are anyway. The logo on the door was just a stylized MB (owner was called Mohammed Bahar). On the trailer was Oryx Freightlines Ltd in English and Arabic, an Oryx (which is a small deer that lives in the desert) and Europe Middle East with an arrow kind of thing on one side. The MB logo was on the front and back flap of the tilt along with an Oryx. All the units were 6 wheelers, some double drive and some lift axle. Sorry I can’t give you a better picture.

What a brilliant picture that tilted Volvo is: is it my imagination, or are these the Volvos that made the one-off journey to Nigeria from Algiers? Robert

Wow, an impressive thread…but be sure on the type…F88, F89 with/without metal grille frame or
extended/narrowed plastic/black grille…

Hi Jimski. That pic of the F88 next to the Oryx motor was taken in the desert between H4 and Tourayf[Spelling] in Feb 1975.It was owned by Roger Hargreaves who bought it after Seahorse int went bust as his share of the company. At that time i was in partnership with him and we went double manned to Riyadh for Astran. We met Pat Hawkes at Kapic who was doing a trip with Phil Llewellin so we ran together from Kapic through to the Tap line where they turned off for Kuwait. The article was in Truck Magazine in April 75.Either they have photos or i think Ashley has some.

Hi David, I ran along with one of Oryx’s drivers from Ankara to the mirrors, in i think,December 1977. I was driving for Frank White at the time and was on my way to Doha. He told me that he was taking the last of Oryx’s trucks to Kuwait and flying home as they were calling a halt to Overland transport. Was that you by any chance. regards jamie

Good morning Jamie. No. I was already on Grangewood by then. Sad job because it was a really well equipped outfit but the Arab can only be fiddled for so long and he is sure to catch on in the end! Still as he was the Volvo distributor for Kuwait, Qatar and the Emirates I’m sure he managed to move them on.

No Robert, I don’t think so. All the motors went to Kuwait where he would have disposed of them locally.

Mike, you’ve done it again - reminded me of another name I had forgotten. Pat Hawkes - what a diamond he was. Anybody have any news of him?

David

Hi DavidMiller many thanks for these brilliant pics I will save em, and the model is on my list, I’m about to start a David Duxsbury in Davies Turner. Livery F89 from the 80’s for someone, but the oryx 89 will be soon after, many thanks again.

Regards Jimski

Hi All

I hope you don’t mind me butting in, I don’t know what the protocol is on these sites as its my first attempt, my late father had a volvo F88 when I was around 7-10 about 1974 to 1977 it was an early model with the metal grill and the wipers above the screen, as far as I can remember the wipers were a bit unreliable as they were powered by air. I would love to have a picture of it if it still exists but don’t have any reg no, the only thing I have is when he sold it it was in dark royal blue with sign writing on the door. T M Banks haulage, wingletang, mill lane, Barningham, suffolk written in white in a curved style, this was done by Chapple signs of Stowmarket.
He used to pull out of Felixstowe, sometimes with his brother Tony and they used to move escalators at one point.

I did say it was a long shot,

Loved reading the comments and looking at the photos brings back great memories, I would love to have a truck, what sort of money do they make?

Is it possible to find out from DVLA what vechicles somebody owned,I am thinking of how I would find my dads old lorry without a reg no
