volvo f88

bowser:
Just a quick question Dennis .

Ive noticed on your F88’s that they seemed to have “Catwalk” fuel tanks , the K fell motor had one even though it looks to have had the large main tank .

Was it just your own spec to have them or was there another reason ?

Hiya Bowser, the catwalk tanks were our own spec, the 3 earlier 88’s had the smaller squarer tank as standard 60 gal or so? Then the 3 later K.Fell 88’s came with the larger 80 odd gal tank. The catwalk tanks held 40 gal and were dropped in by gravity once the main tanks were low enough.Although we always had a few Agency cards we never used them much, too dodgy!!So we always had the motors kitted out with extra tanks, the Atkis and ERF’s were fine, they came with a decent tank on each side, the Scanias 111 and 81’s came with 2x44 gal tanks so we fitted catwalk tanks on them as well, the later Scanias did start to arrive with larger tanks so just fitted ordinary catwalks to them.In the early years we started using a bunker system at London Colney, long before the idea became popular. This was used mainly by the motors we had based at Daventry,Hockliffe and in Birmingham but if our long distance motors needed fuel they also used the Bunker at L.C.

Did you ever have problems with trailers hitting the catwalk tanks ?

I drove an F89 with one fitted that looked the same as your’s . However the trailers we pulled more often than not were skelly’s that had part of the trailer slide plate sticking out and they would catch the catwalk tanks and rip the alloy cover off if we didn’t keep an eye on them .

One or two got the ali scraped a bit but from memory we didn’t do any real damage, they weren’t a roaring success though,we much preferred a tank on each side of the chassis.Cheers Dennis.

What did you think of them Dennis ? The f88’s i mean .

Purely from a drivers point of view they were probably my favorite .

Atki’s and Big j’s are a little too old for me to have driven although i do have memory’s of them .

The F88’s did us a decent job and the drivers liked them, but they were the thirstiest motors on the fleet,we even trialled a form of speed limiter on a couple but they weren’t a success so we took them off eventually. Now the Scania 111’s were quite a different proposition,a great motor, and the drivers loved them ! We became a predomently Scania fleet over the years, with a few Volvos,Sed/Atks and ERF’s and much later Merc 1844’s and a couple of Renault Magnums ! Cheers Dennis.PS and a few Big J’s and Seddon 32/4’s.

Hiya “Saviem” how many buckets full of Tatties have you lifted to-day out of the Allotment ?, The Big J’s we ran all had the LXB 180’s and 6 speed AEC G/boxes,we did have a problem with one of the 'boxes and I spoke to the very helpful guys in Fallings Park and they sent us,FOC,some elbows which we screwed into the filler on the boxes, facing upwards, which increased the oil capacity, problem solved !! Cheers Dennis.

The nearest F88 looks spot on with the cab painted black behind the grill.
Steve.

Heres another F88 Steve that has the “correct” colour behind the grille ! but hang on mate I’ve an even better shot for you ! whats left of OEC 16P,surrounded by 22ton of Libby Tall rice at Sanquar in Scotland in 1979 IIRC.It was written off, total loss, and I replaced it with a new F10.The trailer T34 a Crane Fruehauf PSK was,more-or-less OK, and after a refurb was put back into service.Cheers Dennis.
