Someone reported one of our wagons parking up locally one night. The guy set off to Scotland at 4 in the morning, only to find a traffic copper pulling him as he exited the lay-by, and had him straight into Steeton test centre just a mile up the road. Shortly after, the yard was swarming in filth, and vehicles were seized that day. I got back to the yard that night and noticed that coppers were camping out waiting for other vehicles to return to the yard. . . After speaking to my boss, he had me take the wagon home.
They found every wagon they seized had major failures for MOT tests, had run for months without tax, or insurance, and we’d been filling fuel tanks with absolutely anything that burned. The only thing that was kept relatively legal was drivers records, but even some of them were borderline.
I’m not condoning any of the things that happened during my time at this company, but it’s amazing how quickly things can get to that. Jut a quiet word in the right direction seems to be able to have massive repercussions on things.
It’s a race to the bottom. As profits fall so do standards. The thing is the company I work for are squeaky clean at one depot I worked at for my first two weeks (Stafford), the local one to me is shoddy as can be.You ask the gaffer to sort out defects and he just mumbles. You tell him the wagon is overloaded and you can’t do the full round and he turns red and just swears under his breath. All he cares about is getting the rounds done, defects and rules just don’t matter. I think if the top brass saw things he’d be up the road to be honest. I had thought about not calling Vosa but actually listing the failings at the Birmingham depot, hopefully they would change things without the authorities forcing change and fines handed to drivers etc.

Newbie drivers - thank god we’ve got them to make sure the transport industry is run properly.
Could you please respond to this question.
How do you feel about a man with no Class 2 licence driving around in a 18t truck + load with no entitlements on his licence?
I walked into this game with a clean slate, my slate hasn’t dirtied with years of dodgy practise. It’s people like you whom have the wrong outlook, not me!

In truth if he passes driving assessments and been doing it a while he’s probably as safe, if not safer than a lot out there.
Almost all of the people that cause accidents on the road will hold a valid driving licence. Up to 1997 you could drive a 7.5t lorry with no extra training. Now drivers take a test in a similar size vehicle and drive a 32t eight wheeler.
It used to not be uncommon when I was at a big supermarket for rigid licence holders to take artics out in a staff crisis.

I understand some things go against common sense, I understand making life a little easy for myself and others but watching people drive with no licence, watching a truck go out with a missing side-guard whilst cages roll around. I can only imagine what would be said if a mother and child in pram walked passed and the cage fell on them, the driver would be hung to dry, again the employer blaming the driver and walking away relatively unharmed.
side guards on a tail lift are not actually mandatory and alot dont have side guards as standard. its an optional extra. if your unable to “safely” take 2 cages off at a time just take it steady and do one. i had this problem in our yard, a 10 metre rear steer no side guards. Every over trailer has sides… i went in to defect it and was shown the door. obviously after confirming with planner, op, maintainance manager and even the health and safety manager. the thought i was a bit crazy when i insisted they signed my paperwork to say it was ok… i still googled it before i left yard to make sure it was correct haha
As for a 10.45 shift been a long day… dude seriously go back to construction. most truckers regulary do a 15 hour day… most of what you describe is been a trucker… the only real problem i see was the driver with no license… if he didn`t (and i highly suspect he does or no-one in their right mind would employ him as a driver) then the TM is in the ■■■■
I have two similar situations in my driving time , one fridge firm based in biddulph (now gone to the wall) had us running as bent as anything. Getting up to all sorts, as the job involved plenty of channel hopping the drivers loved it as they were bootlegging heavily off the back of it . Note . They were happy to do it , the boss was happy for them to do it . Smiles all round , I walked after three months as I didn’t want to do it . We all know what some firms get up to , and I can assure u that even the biggest outfits have the odd black mark or two . This will never change and as we are just drivers , realistically they won’t listen to us. Ultimately as long as a customer wants something delivered yesterday there will always be firms and drivers scrambling round to deliver it . Ref the ‘pee-ing’ I did a stretch on boxes and once went into Southampton , booked in and was parked on the holding area by the paperwork kiosk , a driver (colleague at the time) quickly drew his curtains , and locked the door . 3/4 minutes went by before he opened up , climbed out and put a Tesco bag ( heavy) into the bin s opposite . Those who know Southampton will say the bins are right next to a toilet . Some drivers are just morons ! I’m 31 , a youngster in this game , I can’t go around changing people’s ways , and I wouldn’t be going to vosa to get them to do it either , I don’t agree with alot of what I’ve seen and in some cases done myself , but probs best just get on with it , find somewhere better to work… Tonight I’m going to dream of doing a 10 hr 45 shift

The guy had a car licence and driven a 7.5t for a few months then drove a 18t. That is Dangerous Driving as he doesn’t have the entitlements to drive the vehicle. It’s no different than saying a guy on a moped is an ok driver, who minds if he jumps in a LWB sprinter.
My point is that this firm constantly breaks rules, it’s not jsut one or two, it’s literally most of the rules. I don’t pretend to be a messiah, I am a brand new guy fresh out the box and keen to learn, I am not however keen to put my ■■■■■■■■ on the chopping block for bent firms. I was warned by my retired grandfather in law who used to be a fuel tanker driver, he said ‘look out for the bent firm son, you are green and they will take advantage when and where they can, don’t let them because when vosa give you the tug it will be you at fault’. I have wanted to be in this game since I was a kid. I have friends in the game, family who have retired and I have prepared for this for a long time. A dismissive tone isn’t appreciated or indeed warranted.
Any how, enough for me tonight, I hope you all enjoy your evening, night guys and girls.

I am with you CMH , really disappointed by some of the attitude shown here . We all have our bills to pay however if you work for someone you expect certain standards . IMO all sorts of criminal activity is occurring here and i bet the drivers are thinking its just a matter of time before something happens .

I meant driving hours, you can see that on p1
TM is a joke, he didn’t ask guy to produce and the guy blagged that he had sent off for replacement due to losing it after hiring a van or some crap like that. TM should only take on drivers who’s licences he’s seen and then call through to DVLA to check for bans etc.
Some drops are on uneven roads (cambers as you know) and curbs close by. When I say side guards I have also seen one truck without the ones at the front of the tail-lift too, it’s just that side ones are close to kerb.

Cheers pal.
IMO some of the ones moaning are the ones who get up to it, wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Way I see it is I am new to the game and should do it right. If people think I should break the law then it says more about them than me.

I kind of go along with this ethic, not to the point of sending kids up chimneys, but ffs, are we all afraid of a day’s graft nowadays
Yes tacho breaks should be adhered to, but in the real world on a job and knock I would, more often than not, get my arse into gear, get the job done and get home asap.
Strictly speaking yes, it is breaking the law, but that doesn’t mean it is an unsafe practice, my own self preservation and judgement skills protect both myself
Doing the odd tip on break and working for a company that seems to have a complete disregard of the regulations are very different things.
And if we assume that the op is correct, and it wasnt just tipping on break that was mentioned, but overloaded vehicles and using unlicenced drivers, then what else have they not bothered to much about, maybe they’re not too worried about maintenance or insurance?

Relax, it’s the stereotypical newbie drama queen.
His face didn’t fit and he had to deliver some heavy roll cages with a tail-lift and took too long. The boss was a bad man who wasn’t very sympathetic. It was then quickly established with the special newbie DCPC trained eye that health and safety, load security, axle weights and maintenance weren’t taken as seriously as in the training videos and they’re a cowboy operator.
The licence thing isn’t good but this mostly sounds like the driver’s deceit. It’s pretty hard to overload an 18 tonner on roll cage work so I’m not really sure I’d take the credibility of the rest of it at face value. 26ft body probably max 30 cages, payload probably about 10t so you’d need to shove knocking on the half a ton on every single cage before you got to a point handling and stopping were compromised.
It may still well be within the design weight on the plate and the fair competiton angle isn’t really there as much on own account work.
You’ve only been there 5 minutes and claim to know every little secret that they have.
It looks like you had an off day. It wasn’t that long ago in earlier topics that you looked like you was in a good job.
Have a kip and see what it looks like in the morning.
If you’re going to grass make sure no one can possibly link this thread to you, in your real persona, this could come back and bite you in the arse yet, anyone working there must be able to work out who’s who.
Thing is they might not say anything, but they might let your next employer know, or let it be known generally, best route i know to being unemployable.
Can’t believe how many people surmise and just guess at peoples goings on and lives. Quite astounding really, it’s genuinely thrown me. Such paranoia for deceit it’s unfathomable.
Without saying much I’d give the game away as I have researched the company and heard negative after negative. I know what I will do, may as well quit the thread. The narrative of it being lies that is being formed has thrown me so much I have little value in said peoples opinions. I mean why would I lie to some people I don’t even know to gain nothing? Why would I quit my job and lose wages in protest if it was just some paddy I had, knowing how hard it is for a newbie to get a full time job? I haven’t mentioned a company, I haven’t mentioned names and yet I am being accused of a hate campaign when the so called target is anonymous. The sheer pointlessness of it, what a [zb] assumption.
Drivers hours were an issue. Had he not worked through break he’d have encountered more built up traffic and running over his maximum 10 hours. Too large a workload hence the cutting corners to complete a round.
TM failed to check for somebodies licence, it’s as much his fault for not checking as it is the chancer who blagged the job. The TM was incompetent for not checking his licence, it’s a bloody pre-requisite of any interview or agency visit.
I am sure only know half the secrets, the ones I have encountered are the ones I have seen so far. God knows about HQ and what they are up to, however some internet searching raised more alarms.
As for me knowing it all, review a few posts I have made about being green but not wanting to be dodgy, I know rules I have to follow but don’t for one minute think I am a know it all because I am fresh out the box in reality.
I thought I was in a good job until I hit the local depot which I was appointed and set to.
If you’ve ‘‘heard the tale before’’ then there’s of course no shortage of cowboys. I guarantee you on my word this is true. I don’t mind messaging an admin with the companies name if need be.
Thanks for all the helpful posts. I may as well quit this as I stated, because the pointless deceitful hate campaign against a faceless and unknown target seems to be the narrative so may as stick a pin in this.
Night all. Hope 2014 is a prosperous and healthy year for you all.
