Van speed limits

Freelance Class 1 driver/ City and Guilds HGV mechanic for hire, price negotiable, take note Globby 480

Hows things with your lad Bigverne? Hope things are on the up,

I wonder about the things such as Citroen Nemo. Is that car derived van?

Or, one of my neighbours have Land Rover defender with two seats and cargo space behind. Is is car derived? Is Land Rover a car? Or if its not, can I drive 70 with normal one?

Does not need to be car derived van , vans under 2000kg normal car speed limits apply, over 2000kg then reduced limits , Land Rovers are slightly different as they are dual purpose vehicles,

This seems to rear its head from time to time. I suspect that plod either aren’t generally aware of it or don’t normally care that much; and the cameras can’t differentiate anyway.

They definately are ‘generally aware of it’ as they go out targeting vans because of the general ignorance among the van driving public (easy money!!!)…I recieved 3 points and a £60 fine nearly 3 years ago on the A27 in my Volkswagen Transporter(so it’s not a new thing)…I’d never heard of the ‘van’ speed limit either and neither had my bosses or anyone that worked at the company.
Ignorance is no defense unfortunately in the eyes of the law and the police play on that fact!!!

Thanks for asking. He’s a little run down, due to all the chemotherapy.
He’s all bloated from the steroids, and he’s to go to hospital this Thurs in Dublin, to get the news re the future.(Will it return etc…?) So fingers crossed! :sunglasses:

Must admit this one took me by surprise, I have been running a pickup for the last four years, incidentally still class 4 MOT.

My take on the regs is that anything with a MAM over 2000kg is subject to the reduced speed limits whether it can be called car derived or not does not matter.

This also means that most large 4x4’s are subject to the lower limits and possibly many larger cars especially estate cars.

It’s fairly clear in my opinion,The regs say nothing about 4x4s or estate cars as they are classed as CARS and not commercial vehicles as that is what they are generally intended as…Vans are classed as commercial vehicles whether you use them as the purpose they were intended for your building business or cause you like buying bulky items for your own personal use.

Hiya …i got a ticking off in a 4x4 20 years ago for driving at 65mph on a single track road…the copper said it was dual purpose vehicle (50mph)
…i said the cop range rovers went faster.he just said thats for us.
mentioning estate cars and 4x4’s both of them come under the overloading laws where cars are not, unless exsesivley loaded.

I stand corrected

One I used to drive.

Do you live in skipton■■?

Its worth noting that even a relativly small van like the Transit Connect would also come under the reduced limits like a full sized 3500KG gross weight Transit van.
These small Connects are just over 2000kg gross weight- vans.autotrader.co.uk/used-vans/ … -75-diesel

The van laws are just utter gay

IMO these ancient half way limits should only apply to chassis cab derived vans.

FFS most modern family cars (mpv’s, wendy houses on wheels, Jeeps etc) have the same load capabilities as a medium sized van like a Transit Connect.

I had a lecturer-kind policeman giving me a ticket for doing 72 with Sprinter on A90.
He was talking all that crap about how danger is it. I told him: no, it’s not. It’s called Sprinter for a reason, it is designed to go fast as in Germanym where it comes from, on the same category of a road (dual carriageway) there is no speed limit for them at all, and I drove it more than 90 mph no problem. So stop talking me that stories for old grannies and just write me that ticket for that I broke the law.

I also told them that my empty sprinter is safer to drive than their 4x4 Mitsubishi. They weren’t amused… :stuck_out_tongue:

Fife proudly says it has no speed cameras but they make up for it with camera vans, never seen a county with so many, although it may be the A90 outside Fife.

edit - A92 I was thinking of

Vans with windows in the back are classed as cars.

Those speed limits have been in the highway code for along time i belive around 20 years, So there is no excuse for not knowing them
Most 4x4s are classed as cars except the pick up trucks whitch are commercial, as are things like the discover commercial or the range rover commercial etc.
one way to tell is if its got LGV on the tax disk (flat rate of around £210) then its commercial and on the lower limits if its on the emmisions based system chances are its a car
Allot of the van based MPVs actually loose there commercial status in the conversion hence are on car limits again the tax disk is the sure way to find out

But also, the vans have changed over 20 years, so maybe it’s time to get rid of them? Sprinter is driving better than many 4x4s, it’s no longer time of Commers or other silly things that would tip over at every second bend…

Or a minibus

AHT:
as are things like the discover commercial

Car derived so not subject to the lower limits unless they’re now over 2t as the series 1 I had wasn’t.
