Just out of interest, what about pick-ups such as Ford Rangers or Mitsubishi L200’s? Have they been affected by this change?
I think, though I could be wrong. That these are cars? At least I think so.

I’m not sure, I heard the MOT was going to change to Class 7 for them but mine went through normal Class 4 one a few months ago.

Nope, these are commercial vehicles, try getting insurance on 1.
Only if USED as commercials? I can buy one and never carry anything!

Still a commercial vehicle, like a Transit van, check an insurance quote site, you’ll see they’re not on the list

To be car derived then it’s basically a car with metal where the windows should be. Eg corsa van, Astra van. Something like a combo wouldn’t count.Nope…Corsa Combo is ok. Worked for Comet and drove one.
I don’t know then. I think there is a list somewhere, or the manufacturers specify. I know I was looking at getting a small van last year and a lot of the ads were specifying car derived, higher speed limits.
You’ll notice a question mark after my post. Not sure either.
This seems to rear its head from time to time. I suspect that plod either aren’t generally aware of it or don’t normally care that much; and the cameras can’t differentiate anyway.
Had a look around the net and they appparently come under Dual Purpose, so that would mean that they’re subject to the lower speed limits I take it?

Most plod know about it, they make damned good use of it if they’re short of figures, seen regular purges on roads like Woodhead when figures must be short.
Car-derived vans weigh no more than 2 tonnes when loaded and are based on car designs, for example:
Ford Fiesta van
Vauxhall Astra van
Fiat Punto van
Peugot 207 van
Renault Clio van
National limits apply unless towing a trailer or caravan.
Here’s a strange one. I was on the A30 last year in a 3.5t curtainsider. It was a dual carriageway and I was doing 70ish! A Volvo Police car appeared alongside me, and tooted his horn. I looked across and he was waving a laminated sign at me. It clearly stated the number 60. I gave him the thumbs up, he did the same and sped off!
That will be because it’s a 60 limit in a ■■■■■■ Vern.
There are a couple of little type vans about that never had a car equivalent, I’ve often wondered about the limit on these as I knew about the van/car derived van bit.
Another good earner for plod is the cars made from vans market. You all know of the 300hp Vito based MPV, factory built as multi seat cars, seats and suspension off an AMG goes like the clappers, handles like it’s on rails etc, etc…and still subject to the same speed limits as a basic van! The gaffer of a company I do a lot for got done for doing 75 ish on the A30 in one thinking the limit was 70. next time he’ll believe me.
All the rumour of windows, seats etc are just that.

I knew it’s 60…I was being a bit naughty at that moment!
In fact one of our lads got done in the same van, doing 60 on a single carriage, thinking it was ok.

in one of other depots they have fitted a few of the new renault masters with digi’s, its not for towing trailers purpose but have heard all our vehicles will end up fitted with them as this is going to be made law for light commercial vehicles in future
( but our mob are full of it )

Can we move this to my shiny new “Stories” thread please?
It`s hardly a new law.I got points and £60 fine five years ago this month for doing over 50 on a single carriageway with a 3.5T Daily.
That was in Fife where a camera van lurks behind every bend and bridge support in the county.
Hardly a new law
I have been running my new business 6 years now and its a good few years since I drove vans, came from HGV to this and the outlook is grim, went to the tip, phoned Wakefield Met for advice, I have got my trade waste license and they told me I couldnt tip my merc as its a commercial vehicle, so transhipped into my L200 and low and behold thats also a commercial vehicle and they wouldnt let me tip that either due to ■■■■■■ tipping with similar vehicles, got to get more permits, also just short of £760 for year insurance on Merc sprinter with 10 years no claims and £470 on L200 with 6 years no claims, no points or convictions, thinking of selling business and going back truck driving, so much easier than this grief, had a few days on for Petty recently whilst it was quiet, was magic, got paid for sitting on my arse in freightliner reading Long Haul Pioneers.
