Using lorry to move house

I’ve bought a house and it looks like its going to complete on the 17th so I was going to move from the place I have now to the new one over the weekend. I live 6 miles from the yard and my new house is about 4 miles from the yard. I’m going to use my truck to move so I wondered what the legalities will be in doing so. Do I need to use my card or drive without one and just do a print out as I’m not driving for work I’m driving for my own benefit. Has anyone done this themselves and what did you do?. Any advice would be appreciated if its going to cause hassle regarding my breaks and hours etc ill just do a million trips using my useless boot.

If the truck is over 7.5t then technically you should have your card in even for personal use now.

Personally, I wouldn’t bother unless there’s a known VOSA checkpoint en route. No-one’s going to get worked up about that sort of missing mileage.

The fact honest hard-working folk stress over doing stuff like this really shows just how far down the pan this country has gone. :imp:

My sentiments exactly. The ‘total control’ that the faceless bureaucrats in Brussels seek to impose on us so that small trivial stuff like this become an issue are completely out of hand now, in my opinion.

+1…:exclamation:

Good post.I would risk no card and hope nobody crashes in to the truck or an incident with a cyclist.
The route for the move,is it possible that Vosa or the Police are likely to be floating around?
If you put the card in,this affects the weekly rest period. As no break will be taken.
Maybe hire a removal firm to move you or find a driver to drive your truck with his/her card.
If the truck broke down while moving and plod pull up,and manual entries i am not sure about. They hate missing mileage.Or just move with the card in and hope no stop in the next year.

use the company spare card in the tacho, it’s personal use so it doesn’t affect your rest, do a print out and put an explanation with it, it will cover you if your stopped & will cover the company, I’ve moved twice with an artic borrowed off a mate, curtainside is by far the best.

Muckspreader:
it’s personal use so it doesn’t affect your rest,

If the vehicle is over 7.5 GVW then it does affect the rest legally

Private horsebox users with trucks over 7.5 tonnes GVW have the same problem which is why most use trucks in the LGV C1 licence category

beat me to it ROG
also the driving will be and stay on the head unit so if no card was used as someone said, the boss or driver might have a lot of explaining to do if stopped in the future to why there is missing mileage and why the vehicle was being driven without a card :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

How much would a removal firm quote for the move.?
The information on the tacho head stays there for a year.Maybe rent a large van with no tacho in and a trailer.
Good luck with the move.

As you have not mentioned it I presume you have had permission from your boss to do the move.
Otherwise you will probably be uninsured!

Thanks guys, own account driver your spot on. I’m laid in bed half excited and half worrying about facts and figures and then I think of that, it shouldn’t really be an issue but unfortunately the way things are now it is. I’m thinking if I can do as much as I can on the Saturday then ill just do the small stuff between the cars and use the Sunday as my weekly rest. I did think about leaving the card out but it’s Sod’s law ill get pulled.

Yeah I have Albion I thought I’d better ask I do t think it would of gone down well if I went in Saturday Morning and nicked his lorry .

I borrowed a 7.5 tonner from work when I moved. I made sure my card was in and that everything was ready to go the day before to reduce time on my card. I picked the truck up 5:30 and dropped it back before 12:00. Work gave me a 9:00 start on Monday to not affect my rest.

Good point from Jimmi. The move could be done and still fit a 24 or 45 hour weekly rest in after moving.
Or a late start on Monday morning. Will you pay the boss fuel money and rental costs.?

When I moved a few months ago, I hired a 7.5t puddle jumper and drove from hampshire to north yorkshire and back, I didnt bother putting my card in, I was in between jobs at the time so I suppose I could have used my card without any issues, I just couldnt be arsed though

totally legal, the problem only comes in if you drive over 7.5 tonnes stupid I know but that’s the way it is. I have a 7.5 tonne horsebox I could if I want drive it to Scotland and back on the weekend while I am on break no card required, if I was to do it in a 17 tonner I would have to use my card and comply with all the driving rules and only if I had enough time on my weekly driving hours and it would effect weekend breaks as well!!! crazy I know

That was private so the time would be rest

My boss insisted on me putting card in to ensure no problems were caused down the line ie lost mileage or a pull by police etc.

Thats a good idea but you should select OUT OF SCOPE on the menu for that move
