i have yet to be not let in by another vehicle when i have reached the cones…i just indicate waite patiently while slowly edging out and some one normally takes pitty on me

This is not about merging at the cones, there is plenty of warning about what lane is closed etc…
Its more about the [zb] you jack im alright poor driving standards that are in this Country now, some parts of the country its worse than others, in Wales there still seems to be some decent standards, people merge in early, the traffic in most cases flows freely…

Quite simple Rog, its the I gotta get in front, stuff merging brigade, take a look next time you are at work, and you will see what I mean, plus of course the nearside (Or open lane depending on the works) who all close ranks to stop the mergers, like I said, driving skills that are severly lacking in people, both in cars/trucks and keyboard drivers.

IMO,if everyone merged whilst on the move,BEFORE reaching the cones,instead of driving until they ran out of road,all traffic would be able to keep moving instead of the nearside lane having to come to a halt to allow vehicles from lane two to come in at the last minute.

I totally agree mate,that’s my point exactly BUT,people don’t merge all the way down the road.
MOST of them just drive until they can’t go any further then push their way in which makes the lane they’re pushing into come to a stop to let them in.

but in the real world youve got no chance of the zb in the repmobile merging nicely in turn, hes going to barge his way in if he can, i dont mind that but its no good sqealing when you end up hitting the cones

but it relies on lane 1 letting them merge, even if lane 2 guy has indicator on and is moving slowly some people wont let them merge until someone in lane 1 take pitty stops, guy in lane 2 stops so does everyone else in lane 2, but if lane 2 keeps moving/merging with co-operation from lane 1 then everyone is happy. it takes 2 to tango.

i think we should try and get away from the topic of cars merging in. she was queueing in lane 1 and the BOC trucks came along blocking lanes 2 and 3 which is possibly not illegal because lane 1 turns south and lanes 2 and 3 go into the services and north. maybe its my fault but she thought it was acceptable in the trucking world to do this so she allowed them in ahead of herself. when she got home and told me about it i said they truckers was a pair of "zb"kers for turning a 3 lane motorway into a 1 lane road whilst still driving to the cones to push their way in, luckily the wife was there to allow them in.
is it acceptable for 2 truckers to drive like this on a busy motorway?

Orys, the problem here is that there are those that drive in the ‘open’ lane well before the cones and then there are those that rush to the cones in what becomes a closed lane.
Thats ok as long as long as they are patient enough to wait thier turn to move over, but they dont, so many that ‘rush’ to the cones just barge in.
Lets face it, if you are in your car and someone is pushing enough, you’ll let them in just to save your own car. They know it and thats why they do it. It’s BULLYING the other motorist to get thier own way.
If I’m in a car or a truck, it doesn’t work with me and I have had abuse several times for it.
There’s a simple message here, GET IN LANE. The signs count you down from 800 yards, so there’s no excuse for not knowing how far you have left to move over. It just needs to be done in plenty of time.
DF. Lets assume its 2 lanes merging into one, the left one. If those in the left lane fail to drive in accordance with the Highway Code’s advice to “merge in turn” i.e. 1 from the left, 1 from the right, then those approaching the end of the open right lane are left with no option than to bully their way in, but its not them in the wrong is it? Its those in the open lane not driving in accordance with the HWC.

Well said Harry, and other topics whilst their at it, like lane discipline & signaling on roundabouts, how to behave around large vehicles, etc. etc.
Not on Sunday afternoons though, when most are outside (in Summer anyway) but early evening, peak viewing times.

The opposite view -
If those on the nearside lane used their mirrors and saw what was going to happen then they can adjust early to prevent the lane coming to a halt.
This sort of senario requires good drivers in both lanes to keep things flowing
If all you have is ‘me first’ drivers then conflict will occur.
Has anyone noticed that if a few drivers act correctly and courteously then many others tend to do the same…
