TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

Carl:
just brilliant pics, this topic has become the first place i look when logging on .i hope you dont run out of pics ash ,well not any time soon anyway
CHEERS

highly unlikely - though he may turn the tap off now he’s whetted your appetite and get the best-selling book sorted

ash, a book i have (and probably you too) mentions that MUR501H was driven on it’s first Teheran by an engineer from Scammell called Howard Barnes - presume it’s true but did the “regular” driver mention it?

    crusader pics…thats topped it for me,cant be beaten now…or? (ps spotted a red n white 1,double drive goin down m6 last night pullin a low loader, even with a double take, only got dover on the doors?)

What can I say  thank you thank you fans
its nice to know that other folk are enjoying the pics as much as i do.
i know its sad :frowning: but you cant beat havin a sort out and a look through the old pics from time to time. Still dont reckon you can beat the old Volvo’s Scania’s and the like
And dont worry, theres plenty plenty more where this “little lot” came from!
My job dictates that im away some nights, so i dont want you lot getting all upset if i dont post any pics for 2 days :frowning:
ill make up for it on my return

WHOOSHWOOSH: the Scammell you saw is owned by Terry Ainger from Dover. Its an ex military one that he’s refurbed and painted in Coombe Valley colours. It does the rallys and also went down to Spain and back with a convoy of other vintage trucks.
I forgot to put these two up with the others last night:

I posted some G Hoeys Scania pics earlier, well heres his truck before he got the first Scania.
Nice cab conversion…

And how could I forget this one.
After i passed my class 1 at E M Rogers, I started on the 10 tonners then after what seemed like an eternity, got onto the “big stuff”. I didnt get a regular motor for a while, but had this Scammell on and off.
I did day work in it with a bulk tipper hauling scrap swarf from Northampton to Sheffield steel works, then ran into Derbyshire to reload lime back to Dunstable.
Back at the yard it was quickly re-fuelled and the night man jumped in and took a tilt to Felixstowe, bringing an import one back for the next day. If there were no hold ups for him, i’d jump back in at 5am and off we went again!
This truck was a blinding motor and never missed a beat!
If memory serves me right, it had a 290 Rolls in it.
And yes…it did do Europe! Belgium, Holland and Germany.

JESSICAS DAD, sorry pal, struggling to find your Yardleys pic :frowning:
but am still looking…

Wonder how much the design guy got paid for this “STUNNING” colour combination Pink Red Black and Blue, umm nice. See nowadays they are all white with a bit of “powdery pink”.
That crappy colour combo was chosen by Stevens because it was the colour of his old mans parrifin wagon that used to go door to door peddling the stuff. Sentimental …? Pass the sick bag.
That Swiss outfit with the cab attic was driven by my mate Marcel. Swiss / Portugal for years. Marcel got killed walking across a road in Spain & then his boss had to drive the truck. He never had a good word to say about Marcel.I hope he went bust in a miserable painfull slow Swiss way…

God i bet it was hot in there at night. All that glass.

it’s pictured with what looks basically like a 40’ container with side doors welded in - it says the cargo was half n’ half whiskey and razor blades but that could be a bit of bulling it up i suppose - be interested to hear as I was looking for photos on here last year, should’ve bloody known who to ask!

truckerash He had aircon on that old gal. That was the old one. He got a new one that was identical to the old one. We used to meet all over Spain ,Portugal & Swiss. One day I saw this miserable looking git getting out of the cab in France so I asked where Marcel was & he said ." He’s dead. Killed crossing a road in Spain." So I said he was a good guy & this ■■■■■■ says." No,he wasn’t .I am the owner of this truck." And proceeded to list all the petty things that Mr. Perfect thought that Marcel had done wrong ,like not getting a sig on a piece of paper etc. I just turned my back on him & never saw him again. But the job was obviously too big for him…Twunk!

some cracking pictures there, does any of you guys remember norseman freight?. they an out of birkenhead docks. think they only had one wagon on european and the bloke that drove it isnow in the traffic office at corus in deeside?.

I remember Norseman wirralpete, IIRC, they had a depot in Birkenhead, near Woodside, but later moved to Appleton Thorn, Warrington. I’m fairly sure they ran orange Mercs. I have a feeling they had more than one truck on European, because I remember seeing a few of them in Bologna customs on more than one occasion. They also had several subbies on their newsprint job. Truckerash has posted a pic of a Norseman trailer on one of the earlier pages in this excellent thread. One of my former bosses put a couple of us on Norseman work for a while. The job was newsprint out of Bowaters, Ellesmere Port- quite handy for me  I also did several trips to Dortmund for them as well. The driver I remember most from Norseman was big guy, was his name Arthur??

thanka ash i appreciate it

Wasn’t Howard Barnes the Sales Director or something for Scammell & raced a factory backed S26 in the late 80’s, i’m sure that was his name??

thanks for the info pal.
i didnt know that…but would be very interested to learn more.
can anyone tell me where i can get a copy of the book?
havnt had time to speak to Gordon Pearce about it yet but wen i do, ill post his answer straight away.

you probly all know that i havnt been here that long, but in the 3 weeks that my pics have been posted there have been 5000 veiws. How cool is that? :sunglasses:. What a great topic!

While i had a “few minutes” spare today, i wandered round some of the other pages within the “old time lorries”… forum and spotted something which i thought id add too.

on page 4, KW wrote a request for info on EDMONDS INTERNATIONAL from “somewhere in Norfolk” and added this pic

well KW old mate, take a look at these photos.
I got a feeling he was an owner driver. I used to see the B series ERF regularly, but never saw any other truck painted in this livery. Then one day the poor old boy had some bad luck :frowning:
I saw the wagon towed in and parked up in Newport Pagnell services!

Few months later, i spotted her in Dover with what seems to be a rebuilt cab, trailer and re-spray

KW posted the above pic of his Transcon being recovered from the ferry.
But i got this pic of her before the disaster

Mr Edmonds had some bad luck with his motors…
Wonder what happened next? Any Norfolk boys know where he is today?

And while i have the ERF photo shoebox out, i thought i’d put up a few pics of the Sandbach specials, just for you British truck luvers
Never mind those all singin an dancin Volvo’s and Scannys  check out these beauties!
And its purely a coincidence that the first few all come from t’ north…
Who remembers Smiths of Eccles? Class truck with Gardner 240 and Jennings sleeper conversion

Just up the road from Smiths was Wilfred Holden who i used to see in Germany carrying paper.

West of Blackburn, Blue Charger and Bandit ran out of Haydock. Reckon they were joined at the hip, as i always saw them parked side by side in Dover.

2 filleys from the famous Brit - Carmans stable.

And one to get you Middle Easty boys ears pricked.
Euroroute from Northampton had this 320 ■■■■■■■ as a 4x2 originally.
When the Bulgy tilt work came on, it was converted to 6x2 and i reckon it looks so much meaner! It also did regular trips to Asia.

I know there are alot of pics here tonight, but i couldnt resist putting these last 3 up.
PARTricks…not to be confused with PATricks… were local to me and i spent many a happy Saturday morning at the yard.
There was a mixed bag of motors in the fleet including Scania’s, Volvo’s, a Mack and a White. The traffic was mainly Germany, Spain and Portugal with the later running out of the PARTRANS office in Southampton.

this pic shows a left hand drive export model bought direct from the Motor Show. It had a ■■■■■■■ 350 and according to its regular pilot: “went like f*****g stink”…

Enjoy

do you remember these ?
Coutesy of NI Trucking forum

Ash, do you know if Andrews and Bond became Central ? Just spotted a pic on another site, and it rings a bell, Im sure they changed their name when they started to sink.My dad had left well by then and went to Transfreeze.

Truckerash said it before but excellent thread, keep up the good work

routier Dublin Meat was owned by my mate Bunny ,who lived in Dublin. Ex-SCA driver. That snap was taken in Smithfield.

truckerash This ring any bells? A mishap down in Portugal. An export load of bales of cotton shifted. The loaders left a gap down the middle. Not a scratch on the driver or the little customs man that was accompanying him to the border. ( Just noticed that its the same erf , but with a new mirror on the drivers side) I guess the Maggie will be needing a new mirror as well.

Ohh yes - this is the best thread ever…

I have also found this link with a load of 80s / 90s photos pof truck going through dover…
