just for you then Harry…some lovely Maggies

apparantly HT Transport ran to the Middel East. DId you ever see them Ian?

I heard that this lot did Middle East too. Anyone know?
quote]

I have vague memories of HT,but I don’t think they were ever a big player.
I don’t think Maggies were ever a good investment on M/E,I saw more coming home on the backs of trailers rather than under their own steam.
“You call-we haul” did a lot of M/E,they have several galleries of photos on Ferdy’s Toprun site.

I seem to recall that the Maggies were air cooled, not good for M/E work

Dieselcowboy What’s the old boys name on Beresford. He is a legend in his own lunchtime.

That’s Jack Kelly.a magical fella.Worked with him on Beresfords in the early 80s.

Were there not five big sheds in M.I.F.T ? I have a feeling that Gondrand might of been in there as well.
I was in there one day when they closed down the drivers toilets and free shower block because they were in such a disgusting state and I mean really digusting. The sorry thing was that it was only drivers who ever used them  .
Regards Steve.]
the turks gutted them when they where waiting for a back load from davis turner.we had to watch where you put your feet when dropping your trailer or picking one up turds left waiting for you. regards mat man.

Truckerash, if you drove for Rogers you must remember, Hillary, what happened to her and squeeky off Werefords. The Richard Ford photos brought back memories do you have any of one of there trucks, with Bickenhill Transport Services on the door and headboard a 2800 DAF, there was also a Merc in Wares colours with the same name driven by Jack Russell. Genral Express Services is another firm that comes to mind, can’t remember the names but I knew a couple of their drivers too.
Winlan Bay (spelling) George Thomas and a Scot called Jimmy.
Voltainer from Dagenham I think, ran Marathons to Barcelona. George was one, the other was Jimmy Martin?

Keep them coming.

I’ve got a pic of Hillary in Her F7,I’ll post shortly.I remember Squeaky on the CB coming down French side of the Blanc at nutcase-o-clock

This has been one of the best topics i have seen for old companys and seeing the pictures bring back a lot of memories so heres a couple of mine .
To Italy for peaches in this often needed a tow up the mont cenis the poor old lass had,nt the power to get around the hairpins.

Then i got this a real flying machine in its day the 290 under 6 hours Penrith to Dover and that was through the center of london,
No m25 or Brakes (you could not stop them if you were duin 75mph)

Then in 1983 when i lost my licence for three month for doin 75 mph i went on this job

Driving to here to play in the sand, this is after a sand storm in Saudi

Heres the beef trucks clearing customs in Rungis

Few more 80S firms this was taken at Augris Renards at Berck sur Mer

Waiting for the fuel at Faluga

I had a short Spell with Dukes Transport in the early 80s.Bertie the TM was a magic guy.

Essex Drivers, this is a long shot but maybe someone can help me with this.
I think it was 1985 I stopped at Charlies? near Lunneville, a regular stop for people running Swiss. I pulled in one Monday about 11am and there was a guy who asked me for help as he was in alot of pain, I got the doctor out to him the doc examined him in the little house behind the cafe, he was then taken straight to hospital. the guy asked me to phone his boss and lock his truck up and where to leave the keys. Which I did.

Now all I know is the guys name was Keith, driving a 112 or 142 and I’m sure it was an Essex company, a few months later I saw this guy by DFS in Dover and although we both caught each others eye, it didn’t click till after who he was. I’ve always wondered what was wrong with him that day.

Mate: are you havin a larf? This is an easy one
If its the Keith i am thinking of, there was only ever one who was “always” in alot of pain…

well wouldnt you be with that duck stuck on your arm

But in all seriousness, if you can remember the colour of the truck, that might help a bit. There were a hell of a lot of firms from Essex with Scanias

It may have been Keith from Martintrux>Blue 142 intercooled.

Did Schiaffino become Sally?

REALLY :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

I used the Sally line a couple of times and it was more of a floating disco boat as I remember. a mini cruise in fact.
Nothing like the old Shiaffino :open_mouth:

Sally Sun and Sally Star (?) mobile discos? I remember them as freight only, tiny dining/mess room, small square tables and even on a completely calm sea used to rock and roll. Food wasn’t bad but you had to take a stab at the plate as it slid past on the table or you’d missed it until it came back or if you were real slow, crashed to the floor. Always good for a laugh though and duty free at half the price of Townsend. Had to be out of the cab smartish as well because you couldn’t get the door open if you waited until they loaded the one alongside you and if loaded against the wall, it was use the passenger door.

I remember their cruise ships, but they came later, I think.

I.m with you pop,you had a bite of everyone’s dinner on that crossing.

I believe it was salvaged then the Maltese had it running to Reggio Calabria.Last I heard it was doing the Greek islands.

It seems as though the Herald of Free Enterprise was renamed Flushing Range but was scrapped as it couldn’t be sold. The sister ship Spirit of Free Enterprise sank once and was then salvaged and now works in Greece.

Great pictures of the DAFs, keep them coming I may find mine one day :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi Ash and all,I started looking through this at 1500 and now just got up to date. There are a couple of surprising omissions. One is RH Freight of Nottm.and the other is Transcontinental out of Rosslare.I did a bit for them when Paddy Heffernan had it before P&O bought it.I also worked for Ron Dukes and Beresford of Stoke.I had 15yrs at RH and they had just finished M/E when I started. They used to do it in F10s with the aircon unit on the roof.Pete,Vernon,Mick Mcgowan (Magoo) and Jim Hendry all went to Baghdad. The globey in these pics was specced for M/E with the primus stove and running water sink. They were 385s with12sp box.By the time they arrived Saddam had kicked off and that was the end of M/E for RH.I had this motor for 4.5 yrs on Italy,Spain,Benelux.I have seen pretty much every motor featured here since 1977.My first trip abroad was in a Saviem SM280 left ■■■■■■ for R&C transport out of Harold Hill.We subbed for Martintrux.Dave the gaffer was only a young guy and he would fight anyone in the world, fearless. This site is fabulous and brings back memories of some great people I met and also worked with.I understand how you can lose a whole day reminiscing on here. The last photos are of my AE500 on a 91 J plate.I believe ours were the first AE500 LSW 6X4 in the UK.ACH had LSWs but they were all 385s.I remember going up the motorway Cerdon and an Italian Scanny 470 was revving it’s nuts off overtaking me.I was lugging down the revs for the fuel consumption and dropped into low sixth and walked away from him,his face was a picture!! I stopped for a break on the Cerdon services at the top and he came in and I thought he’d come to give me a slap but he just wanted to know about the motor and had a walk through the cab.People walking through the cab happened a lot, especially in Dover customs. It had a wonderful jake brake and I went to Lisbon in it.It was the only time I used the IP5 and felt I was actually in charge.I used to storm down the Blanc with the Malta boxes on little wheels and Malta’s version of 23 tonnes inside without drama, unfortuneately being a Renault it had fell to bits in 4yrs.Fun days.Cheers to all who drove in those Halcyon days.

My Scanny

And this is the Magnum in Cluses and Bourg-en-Bresse

To all you E.M Rogers drivers.I loaded machinery in Como with her and she had to strip a dog of a tilt all the way to the front.I stood and watched her do it herself,no pulling the female card.We helped each other put them back together in no time.A good driver regardless of gender.Wonder where she is now.
