TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

Fair play Chris
I had the luxury of a Man 10 tonner with a top pod on my first trip to Itie .
Did BL go further afield than euro in those days?
Reason i ask is because i remember seeing a pic of what looked like a sleeper cabbed Mastiff?artic, in the same coulor scheme ,stuck in a snowdrift in Turkey.
Was on topruns site,
Hi Suedehead,
If I remember right I think we did send some wagons to Greece once with cars for filming or a Motor Show or something, but no further. We did run Mastiffs at Cowley, none with sleepers on but they were all sold at auction when finished with so anyone could have bought one & grafted a sleeper onto it. A lot of the old B.L. owned wagons were good buys cos if they had only been used on internal factory/local work they had low mileage & they were well maintained in our own workshops.
Regards Chris

The locally built BMC trucks used a slightly updated version of the redline or blueline cab Suedehead, colours were probably just a coincidence?

Suedehead,

I’ve seen the pic on Toprun, it’s not a Tonka JJ72, deffo a Mastiff and an early one at that

Anybody got any info on HJ Victor (Jersey?
The only reason that a Haulage company would have registered there was if it was a tax dodge . . alledgedly . . wouldnt it ?

If you right click on the actual picture click properties copy and paste,

Just had a look at it, I agree with you Suedehead that is defo a Mastiff, we still ran them at Cowley when I was there, the front grill is unmistakeable! I’ve never seen a sleeper version before, but it actually looks quite good (or rather did!)

Zoomed in a bit more now, the snow has covered the middle letter just above the grill, but unless my eyes are worse than I thought they were, the letter on the left as you look is a B & the letter on the right is a C, so I’m betting the middle one is an M, for BMC, this was the only lettering on the cab other than the badge about 10" long 2" deep with Mastiff written on it.

Remember Alex on MAT . It was Xmas in Italy & MAT was going to fly their drivers home .Alex said it would be tight but he would drive home (hero !) Anyway he was on schedule for the last Dunkirk boat when he took a wrong turn & got stuck in a sandpit . He spent Xmas day in the sandpit because the French were on holiday . LOL . I bet his mates never let him live that one down .

Hullo Harry,
That was I think in 1975. That was Alec Shand from Goole.
Cheers, Archie.

What a misarable prat he turned out to be. He was a grumpy git when he was driving but as soon as he was made yard foreman in Hull he changed to misarable git.

Well done Browncow 2, obviously it’s not the name that Chris Turnbull had on his Globetrotter. Does anybody remember seeing Chris and Nikky on their travels in the 80’s/90’s ?,
and whats the name of that fictitious German furry thing that lives in the forest ?
I am fairly sure that Hauser had a warehouse in M.I.F.T in the 80’s  .

They sure did. I drove for MAT back then and before we got our own shed in MIFT we used to use Hausers shed for our groupage. They ran some rough tackle back then, they had two sleeper cab motors Scania 110 but the rest were day cabs. For there collections and deliveries they had some old ERFs that must have been 20 years old.

away from the beautiful scenery of the Alps, who remembers the “HURRICANE” of 1987■■?

on the worst day when Michael Fish said “it wont be bad, it’ll pass by, don’t worry”, I caught a mid day ferry from Zebrugge.
I was parked in Dover waiting for Customs clearance which as usual dragged on into the night.
Late that same day the winds picked right up and the ferries started struggling to get into the port!

I managed to stand on a jetty and got these photos as a tug tried to tow the Sealink boat into the docking area. As you can see, the boat is sideways on!
In fact, the rear of the boat was only inches away from the dock wall as the tug went full pelt to pull it away!
The water doesnt look that bad, but beleive me it was. The tug had to then steer itself around the far side of the boat and pull it round so it could reverse in.
The whole saga took over an hour to get the boat in.

That night we all thought our trucks were going to blow over!
At first light i got a quick photo of the linkspan:

and as I left Dover, got this pic at the top of Jubilee Way.

I shipped over with a couple of our drivers on Rh.We had to hire a car to go home cos the Insurance people had to see the carnage underdecks before getting them off.

Hi Andy, I remember seeing Crowe’s bergundy M.A.N.s and I always thought how well they looked, I seem to remember that they were always clean and smart, was he from Bamber Bridge ? and how many trucks did he have ?.
Were there not five big sheds in M.I.F.T ? I have a feeling that Gondrand might of been in there as well.
I was in there one day when they closed down the drivers toilets and free shower block because they were in such a disgusting state and I mean really digusting. The sorry thing was that it was only drivers who ever used them  .
Regards Steve.

i think wally had 2 or 3 but not sure - you’re right they were always kept well, proper signwriting etc,
i reckon if ash would get his head out of that new book for 2 minutes he’d find a photo or two, easy

i’m pretty sure there were 6 sheds in total at MIFT, and of course the customs house near the gate,
unfortunately it doesn’t surprise me about the showers :unamused: own worst enemies sometime ain’t we?

There used to be only 5 sheds in MIFT but number 6 shed was Hausers old garage and MAT took that on before taking over 5 shed
