TRUCK AND DRIVERS `magazine

Do any of you here read it? I`ve just gone and bought the latest copy, turned to page 19 and what did i find■■?..This months truckers gripe taken from TruckNetUK website! :open_mouth:

The topic theyve used is ¬what gets your goat and theyve used jessicas dad, chester and gogzys posts (3 in total)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The best read for weeks! Good job peeps
I had to laugh because the post of chesters they used, i think i made a reply from a forkies point of view (trying to wind him up)

I used to buy Truck & Driver religiously when I was a wannabe, then a learner, then a newbie but I haven’t read it for years, I started out reading about people whose lifestyle I was fascinated by, then accepting of, then sick to death of living.

In fact I used to read them all, I recall that there was T&D, Trucking, Trucking International, and Headlight all aimed at drivers. As far as I am aware only T&D is still going, and even that jumped the shark long ago.

It seems strange that a subject with such a large potential readership would be in such decline when I see magazines like “Hedgehog Breeders Weekly” and “Tractor Enthusiast” every time I go into WH Smiths.

LOL, my wife bought me the “Tractor enthusiast” mag the other day…lets just say my open fire was well fed for abit

Apart from T&D, Trucking is still going (i`ve been partial to a read) I originally started to buy said mags, just to try and get an understanding about a job that up untill now, the only thing i new about it was that theyre [ZB] scary when ones beside you, goin round a roundabout! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

It`s been usefull for reading up on WTD and drivers hours and the way that some companies do up their wagons…if its done right, looks beeeeeeautiful!

I passed my initial CPC today so, im now on the look out for work.....the sooner the better..............im bloody skint after payin nearly £5.00 for T&D  :unamused:

A read of that might help

Used to get T&D a while ago but not now

There is still Truck & also Commercial Motor

I think there are only so many cheesy birds you can see airbrushed onto the side of some top-of-the-range Scania pulling boxes out of Felixstowe for a pound a mile before the fatigue sets in…

I flick through T & D, Trucking, Heritage Commercials and Classic Commercials in WHSmith to see if there’s anything worth forking out £x per mag per month for. Used to buy trucking religiously when I first started driving but I got bored [zb] by all the doom and gloom and adverts for some truck cleaning product with a bird on who hasn’t aged over the years. The Heritage mags aren’t much better- full of adverts and a snooze inducing A to Z of trucks you’ve never heard of. :unamused:

Dont buy it no more 80% ads 10% rubbish 9% information 1% (the best bit) Cartoon comedy at the back

you get the occasional great article in T&D

Well would you look at that! :unamused: I never even realised…(should have though  ) I nearly wet myself when i seen gogzys name! :unamused:

I had a go at reading vintage commercials and it was interesting, seein how they did it in the “real Olden” days!
I used to work for richard reads and he had a couple of old 1940s (i think) ERF Tankers, which were a knacker. At one stage, Reads went quiet so, to keep his spayer and mechanics buzy, He got them all restoring said ERFs with original Reads and lucozade motifs. They looked the dogs danglies afterwards…not sure if they belong to original fleet @ reads all them years ago though.

Because of the occasional great article, is why I try before I buy.
Has anyone ever been featured in a truck mag? I was in last July ( I think) T and D doing truckers test on merc axor tipper.

the only decent bit in T&D is shobba at the back
i went into WHSmiths in dover on 2nd Sept and the T&D was octobers issue :unamused: :unamused: why can’t you buy septembers issue on the 2nd of september? it’s not rocket science.
if anybody from T&D reads some of these comments how come trucking mag puts euro bank hols in for drivers and fuel prices but T&D puts reviews of cars

I think you will find Truck and Driver is something to do with the same peeps as Trucknetuk ? Sure I’ve seen that Will Shiers posting on here before ? and theres that monthly question thingy that gets posted in the magazine the following month  and NewMercMan has a page in T&D every month telling about his adventures in the states  I guess if thats the case then by buying the magazine we are helping to keep the website open

I do indeed, hopefully you enjoy my column, as an aside, if there’s anything anyone would particularly like to see (except me shutting up  ) let me know, the whole idea behind a magazine is giving the readers something they actually want to read

Loose about 40% of the Ads and more legal stuff and Who wants to drive in the States FFS? :grimacing:

£2.85 is it now? Nah!!! i’ll swerve that one thanks

well lets hope that they read some of the quotes on this thread then,
after all fuel prices and bank holidays are more significant to truck drivers than a review of the Kia Venga :unamused: :unamused:

I used to read them but don’t these days and that is true of all the magazines I bought on most topics that I am interested in. The 20 or so magazines I used to buy a month is coupled to why I haven’t bought or read a newspaper for about five years on a regular basis, I just don’t need them any more thanks to the internet.

I haven’t bought a newspaper in years. I know they only cost a few pence, but they are full of c*ap. I hate the way that news reporters seem above the law, they can harrass, assult, insult, and stalk at will. They destroy lives on a wim, will do any thing to sell a few more papers, and twist the truth to such an extent, that it is impossible to tell truth from fiction.
I really don’t give a ■■■■ what some oversexed bimbo has been doing with some talentless publicity seeker, or what some idiot politician gets up to in the local toilets. Really, most of these people do nothing more than the majority of readers have done, or wish they could do. I want to read news, important things that matter, not some cheap gossip.
Rant over! :imp:
I do buy some truck magazines, mainly for the news section that can keep me up to date with changes in regulation, events that i might be interested in, future long term roadworks etc. Some of the articles are interesting, you get to see what conditions are like with other firms, or in other countries. As far as the adverts are concerned, Magazines make thier money mainly from advertising, making the less expensive for the customer, I don’t read every word in every magazine i buy, so I just skip over the adverts unless they are for something I’m interested in

Advertising is a PITA for readers, no doubt about that, but it does make a huge contribution to the bottom line of the magazine, take T&D for example, it costs just under three quid, it has a full time staff of four people that work only on T&D and a couple more that work on other Road Transport Group titles, then there are the regular contributors, myself included, the cost of the raw materials, paper, ink etc, the cost of printing it, distributing it and putting it out on the shelves, everyone of the people concerned in the process wants to earn a bit of money from it, so advertising is a necessary evil, it makes the magazine affordable, just as it does for radio and TV, look at the BBC for a comparison, each and every person in the country pays towards it, they get huge government subsidies on top of this and the quality of programming is still inferior to the commercial opposition, advertising is the main difference.

As for things that are missing, such as roadworks info and fuel pricing etc, that’s a good point, they are useful and perhaps Will Shiers will put them in, especially if it will attract more readers, that’s the beauty of a commercial operation, T&D is for the readers, the staff try and do the best they can for you, but if you don’t let them know what you want, you’ll get what you’re given, so make your feelings known and you never know
