Trailer height

If my trailer is 4.200 and fifth wheel 1250 mm what will be overall height of my trailer ?

13 feet 10 inches

Not sure if serious ?

5.450 obviously.

17 ft 10 in.

…unless you mean 4.2 based on a fifth wheel height of 1250mm, in which case see Grumpy.

No. Read his post. We both know what he probably meant, but that is the answer to his question as asked.

No, we both know exactly what he meant.

Well in that case, his overall height is… 4.200

If the 4.2m is what is on the headboard that’s the overall height of the trailer when coupled up to a fifth wheel that’s 1250mm high.

4.2 metres.

Does anyone know of anything that automatically identifies the trailer height when you hook up?

Would be good for those moments when you forgot to check and your heading towards a low bridge!

A height indicator on the headboard of every trailer.

I was thinking more like a display in the cab to tell you the new height of the vehicle when you hook up in case you forgot to check the headboard, or in case you didn’t know how to work it out in ft/inches like the guy who started the post.

Ah c’mon Jim. “Forget”, that’s akin to forgetting to pick up a trailer and setting off bobtail to the other end of the country!

Drivers really, really, really need to start taking ownership of shizzle like this and realise that it’s actually part of THEIR job, nobody else’s to check things like this. Truck driving 101.

What is totally unacceptable is that it should be mandatory that trailer heights are shown in feet and inches on the headboard of the trailer.

All bridge heights MUST be in imperial it is optional whether or not it is shown in metric.

And for those who may not know bridge heights are displayed only in 3" increments so 13’10" is really 14ft.

I find it unacceptable thst bridges aren’t signed in metric.
Trailers and, as seen above, 5th wheel heights are normally shown in metric units. We can (normally) only sell goods measured in metric units.
I’m of retirement age and did most of my schooling in metric. Why do we still have imperial for anything? Even an old ■■■■ like me I long ago stopped converting £ and pence, back into shillings, florins and guineas.

However, remember that if you have a 14ft trailer and you go under a bridge marked at 13’10", even if you know it is actually 14ft, you are breaking the law.

If, it marked with a circular prohibition sign, yes.
If only marked with a triangular warning sign, I think not.

Correct - and if a bridge is marked as 13’ 10" that signage doesn’t comply with the requirements set out in the official Traffic Signs Manual. I wonder what effect that might have from an enforcement/legality standpoint…?

Well I’ll give you a classic. The Oban road from the Green Welly has a low bridge. At the junctopn of the A82 (Tyndrum) it is marked 13’9" so your satnav will want to route you miles away via Lochgilphead. But when you get to the bridge it is marked 14’ 0". I know because I used to go regular with Howdens and they have lower height trailers just for that run. Every sat nav will want to route you differently. Total farce.

Why? I work in miles road sgns are in miles, my speedo is in miles if I wanted metric I’d live in Eire. I’m your vintage too and grew up with Imperial. metres mean nowt to me. I.m 5ft 11" not 1.8034 boody metres grrrr.

If imperial was good enough for the Romans, Greeks and ancient Egyptians then its good enough for me.
