I’ve often thought of this but you’re really paying a hell of a lot of money for just in case something goes wrong. If you’re paying say £400 per week for 3 years and nothing major goes wrong with it they’ll have made a fortune out of it and you’ll have nothing to show at the end of the lease deal.
Matt.
Volvo are doing 12-month contract hire deals with 160kms mileage on 460 FH4s for £375 per week with full R&M at the moment, if I did replace my truck this year that would probably be what I went for.

Hi Matt
Like wise if the truck has problems in the 3rd year and out of warranty, and your supplier has supplied another truck for you to use and you have had no down-time, you may of just saved yourself thousands of pounds plus all the hassle of organising it yourself.
If you can get yourself a tractor unit deal at £360-£370 per week I think its a fair compromise.
Typically for the majority of our customers we can get a unit on the road for one up front payment £1,600 ish, compare this too £8,000 deposit plus £20,000 vat payment to fund a HP payment

When looking at a R&M deal for a new truck is there an optimum period to have the truck for EG. 1, 3 or 5 years.
I got some prices for trucks a year ago and went for 5 years because we do low mileage, but thinking about it, after 5 years the truck would have been out of warranty so any problems would have been up to the dealer to fix, I wonder if it would have been cheaper for a 3 year period.
This is probably more for future reference now, as my boss decided not to go down that route.
If for example buy a 2 or 3 year old tractor unit thats come off lease is there any sort of extended warranty that can be bought to cover the breakdown and repair side of things, bit like car warranties.

It all depends on the manufacturer and how they have the residual values ( and how many truck they have coming back in any year), at the moment our figures for 3 and 4 years are almost identical and sometimes more expensive for year 5!
This is down to the cost of maintenance in year 4 and 5 normally.
The exception to this would be if you have additional fitments such as wet kit where the cost of the kit is divided by the number of the years as it doesn’t really add much to the residual value.
Maybe with low mileage the 5 year would be better as the residual value would be higher than normal and less maintenance.

Most manufacturers will offer an extended warranty of sorts or mechanical breakdown insurance, really important to check what’s included and excluded before signing. Also consider the R+M package as this should be like extending the warranty.

So is it possible to lease a 3 year old unit with R+M package, if so would there be a significant price
difference compared to leasing a new unit with R+M.

I’d look at someone like BRS or Collease, both will supply kit a few years old on either spot hire or contract, being able to sign up to a few years will lower the price and dont be afraid to haggle. Now is a very good time to speak to hire companies as they will have lots of kit stood around after Christmas.
I can pm contact details for both if you need.
Hi all. I’ve been offered a fh4 500bhp 6x2, 6 months rental including tyre wear and tear, servicing and RFL. £520 pw Inc VAT. What are everyone’s thoughts?
Is that for a new fh, I have been offered a Renault premium on 6 months at £420 inc vat all in, but a used tractor unit. I think i prefer the Volvo for the difference, still wont earn anymore.

I was offered a used Premium for £385 a week all in so haggle them down to that.
I found the Renault cheaper. But I didn’t like tramping in them so I won’t expect my driver to. The unit is upto 2 years old…
If you speak to BRS at the moment you may be able to get the Premium for less than £385pw. Let me know if you need contact details,
