Muckaway:
Had to drive this today after my wagon broke down with an electrical fault and shock horror, I was very impressed with it. I soon got used to the auto 'box (the first one I’ve driven) and found it a very relaxing drive. My first load was a tight(ish) private delivery near Henley on Thames where I had to get through a gateway typically on an angle, and around a tree. The “tortoise mode” felt strange to use but I had no problem with it. The days work was a good test of the Daf as it included long single carriageways, duals and stretches of the M40, and I got 10.3mpg, beating my Foden
Oh, it had an auto tailgate and air con aswell
Tidy little 'CF, buying them to a good spec as well with fogs and sun visor, just want the auto tailgate in the bin.
Dew, I think the auto tailgate adds about 200kgs to the tare weight. Although the weight plates say 15:100 it tared about 10.700, the manual gate Dafs tare at 10.5…I don’t know whether auto gearboxes are lighter than manuals or not.
I don’t think the payloads are bad for the 6ws with those big steel bodies when you consider some alloy ones only carry around 16t. Smiths like the Superlite bodies as they’re fairly light yet strong enough for our mix of agg, muck, and demolition rubble.
I suggested a few years ago making the bodies smaller but they were worried about stone and shingle falling off. Problem is they only look 2/3 full on muckshifting.
JAKEY:
Nathan , was on ebay , was this andy crocketts ?
I don’t remember him driving it Steve, but he could’ve started out on it: I think Dave Harrop had it for a while; he always drove the older lorries…when he wasn’t in the tea vans

As we’ve discussed before the wagons have obviously got a lot heavier since the days our '05 was launched, It’s not the weight that’s an issue I just don’t trust Auto tailgates with the risk they can carry, rarther have a good old one you know is shut and locked.
Ours on Alloy insulated bodies didn’t come in too bad really, but obviously tarmac haulage is a different game again.
Re B703 ABW in Jakeys’ pic: I remembered the cab was filthy when I rode in it and I got dirt on my clothes just sat in the passenger seat…and hiding behind the dashboard. Callum has a right job undoing his baby seat straps and jumping down before another lorry passes the other way
hammer:
Muckers, how much did the Volvo FMX you had on trial weigh?
Reason I ask is that a lad locally has just bought one on a 12-reg with a Wilcox Wilcolite ally body and it tares 13.5t. A bit porky I thought?
Crikey how big’s the body?! The one we had carried 19t max with a small steel one.
I would’ve thought 19.50 would’ve been a good payload for a Wilcox; They were always lightweight.

I thought so too. TBH, I was reading the weighbridgemans screen over his shoulder so it might have been 12.5t. Maybe its got a big diesel tank. I didn’t notice if it had allys either.
Well can’t remember now I had them all on my old motor got rear cab bar and chassis bar aswell and bottom bar she’d full of stufff for it …not allowed them so it’s been taken off now
