My answer to

any one know why a pig has big ears

The pig puts its big ears in front of its eyes and keeps shouting

GOTFERDOMMA ARE WE OVER DER MONT BLANC YET

used to be able to say it in dutch but ive forgot how to

Kinda lost in translatin there,Klunk. But still nice to see some fresh mountain air. You should publish those old snaps at least once a week ( Its the only fresh air most of get , stuck here in the UK )

klunk/■■■■■■■ Just realized that Suza is at the bottom & yes I did used to stop at the parking on the right when I was doing the peaches. Used to run empty from UK to Italy for P+O. The problem is that I have worked out of UK,Holland,Swiss & Italy so I have never really ploughed a really deep furrow on any run because I kept on changing the countries & the companies as soon as I got bored. Sort of followed the ‘boom/bust’ way of life that M Thatcher created at the time.

Took this of the lake at the top of Cenis about 18 months since. Enjoyed the ride into Italy wish I gone a bit slower. Of cause I was on M/C don’t fancy taking an artic up.

Click on it and it will open up. Don’t know why it’s so small it opens up to full screen quite well

mont genevero springs to mind, its on a strong par with the cenis.its hard work from grenoble to susa, but the scenery is better.

Thats one I never went over . I heard there were overhanging rocks that you had to look out for ,or a dodgy tunnel…? They’re both probably off limits to all trucks these days…

The restaurant at the top of the Mt Cenis used to serve enormous vol au vonts stuffed with mushrooms and cream as a main course as I remember.
I believe they closed thast road to heavy goods vehicles around ten years ago but I am not sure exactly when.
You got a great view of your trailer ‘jacknifed’ next to your cab as you took the hairpin bents - and a great view of the wrecked trucks below thast took the quick way down.
I absolutely adored that run!

Yeah,it was always vol au vons there but they were good . It was a savoury cream sauce with mushrooms. The food always tasted good because of the climate. It was a hot sticky summer down below but at the top it was the cool Spring air that gave you the appetite.

Three that spring to mind in this area are:

A689 from Crook upto Alston via Nenthead.

A689 from Penrith upto Alston is full of hairpins and 1st time I went up it load in an old 143/400 blew the radiator at the top.

A684 for Leyburn to Hawes and onto Kendal full of tight bends and narrow bridges and blind bends.

How about the pass over St Marie when the tunnel was closed…?

The really narrow bits have got special electronic signs to hold back the downhill large vehicles to allow the uphill ones through first.

Really ? That’s news to me, I’ve never seen such a sign on that road.

Maybe I’m thinking of somewhere else. Narrow uphill bit, where the buildings are right at the edge of the road, and just bendy enough that you can’t see through. Electronic signs to warn downhill traffic of large vehicles coming uphill, and to hold them back. I think the place name is 4 letters.

Anyone have any idea where I’m thinking about?

I’ve seen those signs as well…I think (but not certain) they are on the A37 between Yeovil & Dorchester - somewhere down that end of the Country anyway

On the A350 just before Shaftesbury, coming from Blandford. Was a litle bit tight thru there if you met another wagon beofre they put the signs up.

A483 Llandrindod Wells to Abergavenny…!!!

Via Talgarth…!!!

I use MS Autoroute 2006 with Sat Nav…
Backed up with the Trusty Truckers atlas…

Well approaching Talgarth this week (1st time) series of roadworks for new bypass, i missed the junction and went round Talgarth to the West…

Oh well i thought, quick glance at laptop, turn left down the High Street then turn right and hey presto back on track…!!!

So glad i did, because if i had followed the original plot i would have had an impossible left turn in Talgarth with a 55ft artic…

For those of you who have yet to do this route, as you approach Talgarth from the north pick up signs for Llangors…then go left on to High Street…narrow but passable…

All will be better when bypass complete…

Also i hear Lyme Regis on the “A” road approach is NOT suitable for artics…!!!
Heard someone got stuck on the 90 deg corner and had to be winched out…

Chepstow town centre is tight too !!! down towards Travis Perkins…

How about the Arlberg mountain pass, long before the tunnel was built, they used to have a rescue helicopter stationed there manned and waiting ,halfway down or halfway up,depending which way you were going.
And a few did go over.

there’s one intersection i really hate and it’s the give way from the A72 (lanark bound) where it merges with the A73. You have to turn right onto the A73 to enter Lanark and the roads meet at a really acute angle so it’s one of those ones where you can’t actually see oncoming traffic from the left unless u actually get up off your seat & lean right across to see out the left side window.

I found it pretty hard to keep my foot on the clutch/brake

Not 100% sure if we are talking about the same route but it is possible to get a maximum length artic through Talgarth if you are talking about the corners where you do a right turn and almost immediately afterwards a left turn (when travelling northwards). It’s not good though and there is plenty of paint and gouges etc on that building to celebrate those who got it wrong.

I tip there too. It’s worse on the way out after tipping though I would say, on the very last right hand bend.

Incidentally, if you tip regularly at TP and have SatNav, you might be interested to know that you can download TP POIs from TP’s website.

thanx for the tip ref TP poi’s…

i forgot about the tight turn on way out from there…!!!

having took a 40’ container to minehead on friday, via the A39 (no choice over the 13.9 lim for the A358) coudn’t help notice signs to avoid the ■■■■■■ hill at all costs for artics/hgv’s ,so how bad is this hill, and as anyone given it a go? :open_mouth:

some lady decided to swap christchurch ,New Zealand for Minehead, why christ knows,me i would have gone the other way.

.

I have done Porlock Hill in a car and I wouldn’t go anywhere near it in an artic. As much as anything, the cambers are so wrong that you would probably end up damaging the truck if you tried it- there is a hairpin bend on a 1 in 4 climb which would probably bend your trailer chassis.
