Not a genuine photo; I think it is taken from the model corgi brought out a few years back with the flat load removed.

Always said to be the worst new truck Redpath ever bought due to noise in cab and small AEC motor, I was told that by the driver who got it new in 66 and only drove it for less than four years when it was replaced by an ERF in 69 : (PTY 989G). They also ran a Guy Invincible unit which was driven by Brian Berkeley of Felton who also had a few trucks if I remember correctly.
[/quote I remember Brian Birkley from Felton He had a brand new 6 wheeler Commer flat wagon, Also Big Bart Thompson who worked for them he drove a long wheel base 4 wheeler Albion flat, Then in later years Bart went on to work for Russells of Bathgate who used to do a change over at Morpeth when there was an all night transport Cafe on the edge of the Market Square, Birkleys were a local Felton firm, Who used to run as far as London with 5 or 6 drops, Then reload with whatever was on offer as it was in the 50/60s Era, When drivers got their own return loads, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry:wrong thread for this photo but i thought I would post it as you mentioned Russell of Bathgate doing a change over at Morpeth cafe where this photo was taken, I came across it on another site, it was taken in 1965. Colin.

Hi Colin. That’s a nice photo of Russells changing over in Morpeth, where was their southern depot?. MFS,part of Glass Glover Distribution changed over in Morpeth market place in early 80s after the Stannington garage, where we used to swap, stopped the changeovers. Unfortunately one of our drivers - can’t recall whether it was a Maltby driver or a Newbridge driver - fell asleep and woke up surrounded by market stalls being erected as it was a Bank Holiday. He managed to extricate himself but I remember there was a bit of bother over it and we then changed over at ATS depot in Morpeth.

Hi Chris; Sorry can’t help you with the where about of Russell’s Southern Depot. Been some great photos and stories on this site from the good old days when most drivers would stop and help each other with things like changing a wheel, changed times now. Colin.

IIRC The southern depot was at Hadfield, I may be wrong of course as my mem buds are a bit slow, A driver who worked for them called Arthur Richardson who live at Scots Gap in those days along with Big Bart , Lawrence Usher, from Felton.Arthur Foggetey from Morpeth , Who in later years drove for Colin Towers of Morpeth, Then T Boiston & Sons Fisher Lane Seaton Burn, The good old happy days when driving was a steady old job to make a few bob, No hassle or Vosa to deal with,    , Regards Larry.

Hi Larry; just wondered if you knew a chap called I think Charlie was his first name who drove a 4 wheeler Leyland for Lowdon at Seaton Burn, I used to se him when loading at Fields Packaging at Killingworth in late seventies when I started at Morton’s on a AEC Marshal,we always helped each other rope and sheeting. Often two of us from Mortons would turn up at Fields to load half load each for Glasgow or Aberdeen and then find another part load somewhere else to make up load as we got our loads from different clearance houses and not direct off Fields. Colin.

Hi Colin, He was Charlie Watson, He drove for Lowdons for a very long time, He retired but sadley he didnt enjoy many years after that, His last new new 4 wheeler flat is still in the Lowdons back yard with weeds shooting up through the cab. I have a picture of it someware I must hunt it out and show you,Regards Larry.

Yes that was the name . Charlie Watson, he was a good chap; I think the Leyland was on a S or T plate , I know it was a lot newer than my Marshal; JSG 606E bought off Finleysons of Broxburn IIRC. Colin.

just a bit of useless info_ back in new years eve 1966 I was on my way to LONDON COLNEY in an artic which i had never driven before- the only cafe that
was open was THE HILLTOP at BLYTHE. any way i was having my supper when in comes an old fellow driving an atki artic for RUSSELLS. as there was only him and me in the place we got talking. i told him this was the first time i had driven an artic and i was a bit dubious as it was snowing like h__l. he gave the following advice which i have remembered all my driving days- NEVER BE FRIGHTENED OF YOUR LORRY- IF YOU FEEL SAFE DRIVING AT
10 mph YOU DRIVE AT 10mph DONT WORRY ABOUT ANYBODY BEHIND YOU IF THEY WANT PASSED YOU THEYLL GET PAST- AND ANOTHER THING YOULL
NEVER KNOWN EVERYTHING YOULL LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY. PS- HE WAS RIGHT

Hi Colin, This is Charlie in his younger day, Looking back to those days we have most likley met, If you ever parked up at Fisher Lane Seaton Burn, I recall a lad Roy, He was the one who told me that they were packing in and thats when I bought the Sedaki, Mortons used t park there quite a lot ,Along with Douglas Bros, & Philips of Seahouses. I had the old brick building & yard

as my opperating center, All this land & the old wooden garages belonged to my cousins The Boiston Bros.Regards Larry.

Yes I recognise Charlie from that photo; he always wore bib and brace overalls when I knew him.i must have parked up at your yard dozens of times over the four years I was at Morton’s,when I finished in 82 they only ran four trucks; 3 Atkinson artics and a six wheeler Leyland (F.reg), it would be Roy Gibson who you remember; he was with Morton for a lot of years as was Dennis Beverage who drove the other Atki which had the ■■■■■■■ 250 fitted, I think them two units came from Patterson’s of Aberdeen. Colin.

Nmp off F B

Later than 1918, the company didn’t exist until the mid 1920’s. The six wheeler versions were popular in the 1930’s, they were also used as staff cars with saloon bodies. NMP.
