Indeed it is, Robert. When I was a trainee spanner-juggler we used to get the occasional convoy of Antars and their ancilliary vehicles calling in for fuel. With the Thorneys powered by the Rolls petrol engines the site manager was on the phone for a tanker delivery before we’d filled the first lorry!

I read somewhere that they did about 3 gallons to the mile! Robert

Somewhere around that! Not the sort of vehicle that you’d want on quarry haulage. :unamused: :unamused:

Good site for Antar pics…www.the-antar.co.uk.

I use to work on one we had as a nipper at Hill of Boltey in the early '60’s, it had a Rover Meteorite V8, went out as mate on it once to Wales to collect an army tank from Newport back to Andover, it did about a mile a gallon, also carried a 45 gallon drum of oil on the back, you needed it…!!! :unamused:

Long ago Smith & Robinson had a couple of 8 wheel ERF’s with straight 8 RR petrol engines in em. they were on contract to Hedleys, Trafford Park, loaded they went over Standedge like stabbed rats but they didn’t last, the fuel consumption was…“disappointing” (very)

Leyland experts might help here- is this a cut-down rigid, or an original Leyland 6x4 tractor? If it is the latter, what would its name be?

I think it is an AEC and my thought it is a cut down rigid looking at the rear of the chassis it looks like it may be a tipper chassis??

i spotted an modern-ish ERF parked up in the yard of JF Swift in Barnsley today.

It`s definitely an AEC and i would say it had been cut down judging by the length of it , i wonder when the last Mammoth Major units were made for civillian use , i guess a certain Mr Edge would be able to tell us, the fifth wheel mounting looks a little strange

It’s not in that spot any more - and as far as I know, it’s a MM6 ■■

Looks like it has the rear tipper body mounting still in place…

Well spotted Dave. At the rear of the chassis, is that one of those small drawbar couplings, used for the towing of site compressors etc?
