A couple of F88s that may be slightly past their best.

Hi Rentadent, the first F88 in your post was my pride and joy for about 11 years prior to my selling her in about 1991 after she had reached her 17th birthday. The registration is YKX 859M and cost her original owner £7900 plus £125 for the 16 speed gearbox option in October 1973. I think IIRC I sold her for £5500 ,not bad depreciation eh? £2400 in all those years ! I hasten to add that your picture is not what it looked like back then! Anyway thanks for evoking some old memories and making this old man happy! Best regards .

John

Hi 3300 John , I’ve got loads of pics of her resplendant in my livery but for the life of me I wouldn’t have a clue how to put them on here - sorry mate!

Dead…

I wonder if Rentadent can tell us if either of the volvos are for sale ? I’ve sent a couple of PMs but never got a reply, there’s maybe a problem with my mail settings.

To the best of my knowledge the photo of my old 88 was taken in a yard in Shropshire and has subsequently been sold to a guy in Crewe who is ,I believe making one out of three donors.

Sorry mate, I didn’t see the notifications, I’ll PM you now.

They were taken in Shropshire late last year, I don’t know about your old one being sold but could find out for definite. They are quite well hidden from public view so would only have been seen or known about by those that work or deliver there.

Hi 3300 John , if you look on the thread " South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards" on page 424 about halfway down the page, Pete359 has posted a picture of YKX in working guise. There is another somewhere on an F88/F89 thread but I can’t remember where. I must find out how to post pics on here! Regards Noel.

I wonder why the ecx was retired  as browns have still got some motors older than that on the road, just the other week I saw an erf ec in longport.
cheers
gaz

I’m not sure the reason but both have been taken off the road, a shame as they are/were really nice motors to drive.
There is still a white ECX in daily use and also a blue/grey EC that has been retired numerous times but keeps finding it’s way back onto the road.

tetragaz:
hey rentadent
where did you find these 2 motors, I think they need saving from becoming part of the undergroath.
cheers
gaz

They’re part of the old fleet of G Cross and Sons from Wincham, some have already been sold but there’s still a handful of ERFs left in the undergrowth including many spares from trucks broken over the years.
although the owners have no interest in restoring one themselves they are very enthusiastic about the preservation scene.

I spotted an ancient mini tractor in one of their warehouses and fancied buying it and restoring it to it’s former glory. I kept nagging Robert, but to no avail. He claimed it had “sentimental value” as it was driven by his father. I’ve a feeling that Dave would have parted with it for a few quid but Robert said “No”.

Hi John, she was a formidable piece of kit in her day - not in the same league power-wise as the Irish 141 pictured beside her but utterly reliable nevertheless unlike the nightmare model which replaced it - The infamous F88 290 or “Wallet Basher” as it was nicknamed by Hartshorne’s men at Walsall , indeed the one I had lived up to its reputation and would pass anything on the road except a Volvo agents or a filling station!! Alas gone are the days when you or I could get down in the engine room and fix it without a laptop in sight!! Regards Noel
