John
hi john, you could have got your hands on it in2004, sold for £55.000, then, she was my pride and joy washed her every night, it seems sad now that i did that, but i loved it them days so much fun and friendship, in a way put tarmac trucks on the map with all gear and truck shows we went to, cliffe hill boys used to call us berties boys as he was the area transport manager , as we say the good old days. tony.
Hi Tony, Just saw this reply while going back through the thread. God it wasn’t dear when you sold it- do you know of it’s whereabouts now? It certainly was a stunning looking tipper- fair play to you. Would you have more photos of it?
You are right about the good old days- it’s the same over here. The craic is gone from the job due to rates, work, safety, checkpoints etc.
Mabye it will turn full circle…
Cheers
John

Jesus Christ lads, who reckons the rates are bad It’s a stunner. 480- wow, she’d be an animal to pull.
Fair play to that man, she’s mint.
Cheers

17miles on dry stone = 3.15gbp/tonne, about 62 quid a load on an 8x4 with all the bling.
Fuel at 6.30/gallon, 8mpg works out at about 65pence/mile. You’ll clear about 40quid a load. You need to do a lot of them to make any money.

Just a quick 'un before bed.
This really is a cracking shot taken by Peter Davies sometime in the early 70s opposite the Rising Sun pub at Hazel Grove Cheshire.
The Routeman was based at Topley Pike and was a 26 tonner. It was part of a batch of Routemans moved into Topley Pike shortly after Tarmac had bought Derbystone Stone out (the previous owners of Topley) and they upped the fleet as there was plenty of work out of Buxton due to the motorways being put through round Manchester.
I worked at Topley Pike in the late 60s and early 70s. I enlarged the photo’ and I think the driver is Gordon Haigh.
Hello Wondercat and welcome to the forum. I see you worked down at the Pike. Can I ask how many wagons were based down there at that point? Me old man who worked there tells me it was something like 70+.
A couple more pics for you to look at. They were taken on the Cat and Fiddle, on Macc. side of the pub. Can you ID the drivers?
PS. I don’t suppose you have any pics of the Tarmac fleet back then?

Thanks for the welcome BonkeyDollocks, I could not ID the drivers I think they are from the Hillhead/Waterswallows fleet, the reason I say this (if my memory is right) we did not have any F reg RE33s or G reg Routemans, only in Limmer colours, we took over the fleet from Grin Quarry. Our Tarmac coloured Scammells were transfered to another quarry (down south I think) at this time, they were H and J reg, we had them new.
Looking through your posts I spotted the AEC Mercury with Neville dump trailer in AMASCO colours, we had one of these for a while at Topley Pike (could be this one!).

One of the smartest, and cleanest MQP Trucks is that of Tony Gough, this is his previous Volvo, that was often seen on the roads of the West Midlands. This one was replaced in early June 2011, by a new Volvo, of which I have yet to see…As mention previously, MQP Ltd is a Tarmac / Hanson JV. Look at the logo on the tipper body, and the M is in the style of the “A” from ARC (now Hanson) and the outer triangles are in the colours of Tarmac.
Saw his new one parked up at Wednesbury depot on saturday looks really nice what makes me laugh is non of the Wednesbury boys will come into cliffe hill apparently “it’s to dirty” lol
Looking at some of these new eight leggers I wonder how they manage to avoid damaging the fuel tank, front apron etc on sites. We had Foden’s and when reversing through ■■■■ the bumpers got clogged up with muck and would bend, also on some surfacing jobs you were dropping down about a foot or more into trenches (where they had dug out the old road) and then having to be dragged out because the axles would be dragging on the deck! Maybe the old H & S regs have stopped all that, like shoving sleepers under the tyres to try and keep the lorry level when tipping across inclines? Tipping tarmac at MIRA used to be fun…not!
bonkey looking for leyland G271 NNN in khaki colours i am sure i saw it on this site if its one of yours could you put it back on must have been moved /deleted,talking to retired driver he thinks it was his.
