Looking at some of these new eight leggers I wonder how they manage to avoid damaging the fuel tank, front apron etc on sites. We had Foden’s and when reversing through [zb] the bumpers got clogged up with muck and would bend, also on some surfacing jobs you were dropping down about a foot or more into trenches (where they had dug out the old road) and then having to be dragged out because the axles would be dragging on the deck! Maybe the old H & S regs have stopped all that, like shoving sleepers under the tyres to try and keep the lorry level when tipping across inclines? Tipping tarmac at MIRA used to be fun…not!
Pete.
Hi Pete,
I think you have hit the nail on the head regarding H & S regs on sites.I see a lot of the tippers tooing and froing from the local quarries.I never see them that dirty compared to years ago.I think the sites are a lot different tour days.
The latest notices to go up in the weighbridges of these quarries warning drivers about keeping the lorries clean,otherwise they will receive a yellow card…Also if a lorry is left unattended with the keys in it,the driver will be suspended.If its left with the door open,the same applies.A very different world .
Cheers Dave.

bonkey looking for leyland G271 NNN in khaki colours i am sure i saw it on this site if its one of yours could you put it back on must have been moved /deleted,talking to retired driver he thinks it was his.
Never a problem mate.
And cheers for the pic of the 4000 Foden just above. Joe says it’s odd to see a high sided tipper on black and it is, but in the past I’ve seen quite a few ordinary aggregate bodies with greedy boards in place on the black job.
thanks for that bonkey i will get in touch with driver and hopefully he will confirm it was his.If it is he later went on to form amberhill that we spoke about before.Would it be ok if you e-mailed me with photo and would it be ok to make a copy to show him he does not have access to internet.

0 John scothern with the first volvo in olive drab,his first new truck with pull over sheet,a long time ago.Running out of holme hall quarry stainton.
I’m quite a fan of the livery as most of my memory’s are from that era
That photo must be early 1990s to have that type of sheet
tried enlarging looks like its on a K plate,my mate graham beach who used to have the foden F544 XWT keeps sending me any he finds from other drivers i will put them on when he emails some more.
Basically it gets the material to where it is required via a screw system, driver operates the system via remote contol, and the spryder extends out, about 6 metres and pumps the 6mm or 20mm coated product to the exact point of use… saves the customer having loads of wheel barrows, mainly was used on handlay jobs, an American system, discontinued about 10 years ago, as deemed to dangerous, Pete’s was based at Caldon Low, and Trevor Lewis had one at Bayston Hill…
TARMAC:
How about this one, the illfated spryder attachment, on Pete Gosling’s Volvo…
I’ve never seen anything like that before!
Questions;
How does it attatch to the wagon?
When did they hook it on, in the quarry or on site?
Assuming the wagon tips during discharge, didn’t it twist the chassis with the boom extended?
Who paid for the equipment, Ta*mac or the haulier?

Questions;
How does it attatch to the wagon? The wagon had two tailboards (this one had legs on it), this and a standard one. and the floor was modified with a scew conveyor.
When did they hook it on, in the quarry or on site? At the quarry, the night before
Assuming the wagon tips during discharge, didn’t it twist the chassis with the boom extended? As far as I remember it wasnt a problem
Who paid for the equipment, Ta*mac or the haulier? As far as I remember, Tarmac did…
It was withdrawn om H&S grounds a few years later…
