Ex-tanker tractors? lined up in Southampton Docks for export!
Anybody remember this publication? Apologies if I’ve posted it before…can’t remember.
The hazardous routes caused some consternation Chris. There was some bloke full of his own importance from ICI. he didn’t like tankers going past his house on the A19 near Shipton. Oh! how I loved having a BASF tank behind me and ignoring his silly letters

Well,he wouldn’t be able to do a deal about a BASF tank Malc.
Badische-Anilin Und Soda-Fabrik - so that’s what BASF stands for,HQ Ludwigshafen,it’s an old company and a big competitor of ICI at one time I would imagine?

The original photos above were “borrowed” from Gilbraith Tankers along with many others by a chap who wrote a book called Great British hauliers.
They were never returned, luckily I still have copies of most of them and some have me on them.
How Colin got them I would like to know unless he scanned them from the book or copied them from another forum where I posted them.
No problems, they are not copyrighted.
Russell.

Hi Russell I spotted them on his flickr site and asked him if he would mind sending me copies which he did,so i dont know where he got them from but sorry about that mate now i know they originally belong to you.John
Don’t give it another thought John, Its fine by me, I just wondered how became by them.
I have seen our photos on eBay for sale by the knitting lady and know for a fact they were not hers originally.
My photos are for all to share but I dislike others making money out of them.
I have even seen some of our Gilbraith Tankers photos taken by our own drivers in our yard or parked on Birch sold with “copyright” on the back by a well know dealer.
I have a collection of at least 550 photos of both our fleet or Gilbraith haulage and subsidiary companies going back to early Maudsleys up to the Time we sold out to Hargreaves.
Russell
HI Russel ,I agree with you if you want to show your photos to us then i am all for it ,you are doing it for pleasure not gain ,so keep them coming please ,yours Barry Waddy

I am sure you don’t want to see all of them but I will slip a few in as and when I upload them.
Early days.
The driver had never used a ratchet handbrake before and when he went for the operator the tanker ran backwards into the Leeds Liverpool canal.
Woodwards of Formby show, (I think).
On of the few we had on Gulf contract.
On of the last to leave Flixborough before the plant blew up on a Saturday. The driver, Tommy Greenwood, had just deliverer Pheonol.
The buildings behind are now demolished and the M65 near junction 7 was built there.
After Gilbraith sold out to Hargreaves he sold the depot to AAA recovery where they store cars the police have impounded or towed from the motorway.
Newer ones to follow
Hi Russell, great pics,i always think the old lorries look better in black and white, and especially when they are taken in old transport yards like Gillbraiths. Most yards were like that in the old days, full of muddy holes.Keep the pics coming Russell.Cheers Ted.
You wanted a few yard scenes, well here are a few.
Taken from the M65 behind the photo below.
Accrington depot wash bay. My mate Peter Davison took the picture, he had the DAF with the Knights head badge on the front.
He always put the badge on every motor he had, he says the Atki badge doubled the value of any motor Gilbraith had. We never ran Atkis.
A pair of Highwaymans tipping at Cadishead, I had fleet number 131 on that job when I started in 1969.
We managed four Wiltons in six days.

FTC was Peter’s Highwayman when he was at Gilbraith Transport - it wasn’t on the Tankers fleet.
No John,
The one you are writing about was new to Gilbraith Haulage, not Tankers and was driven by a mate of over 40 years, Peter Davison who later went to Bowkers and then joined us at Gilbraith Tankers. He is responsible for most of the modern Gilbraith photos we have.
Below are three photos of the Highwayman you mentioned.
New at a Leyland show before it was registered.
Loaded and driven by Peter, he got after a driver called jimmy Dwyer had been allocated it from new…
When Peter found out it had been preserved he went to see it and it was started up for him.
It had had the Leyland 680 taken out and a Gardner fitted, Peter said when he sat behind the wheel again after all those years his eyes watered, he blamed the smoke but we know it was nostalgia.
Gilbraith Haulage had three of the very last Highwayman’s and they were long wheelbase tractors, Gilbraith was a main Leyland, Albion Scammell dealer and Shell had ordered the Scammells from them and cancelled the order.
Did Eddie have throat cancer and is he still alive? It was just before Gilbraith sold out to Hargreaves when I last saw him, I used to pop down for a brew with the lads after I retired.
This was the first lorry I got when I started at Gilbraith’s in 1969. You can see the difference in wheelbase between mine and Peter’s.
Russell.
Great pics Russell, nice to see the oldies keep em coming .Cheers Ted.
