I imagine this one is on its way to a show or to be rebuilt. I worked for Bailee Freight in Stokesley and Bob Bayliss was in the workshop. He left in 1979 to set up Isotank with Brian Garnett and in later years bought Geoff Freeman Transport from Brough East Yorkshire. The lorries below are also owned by Bob. The bloke is a diamond and he does know his stuff.

Lovely old Albion on contract from Bulwark.
A great photo, that starting handle looks like a wrist breaker.
True to form Sniffy, the “Distinguished Silver Haired Gentleman”, a true die hard tanker man, was swiflty off the “Ventura” in Saint Lucia, to capture this local DAF CF85 which I note is right hand drive.

I hope he had a word about the lack of compliance to the working at height regulations

hi all, The hazcem course was started at CASTNER,S in Runcorn in mid 1970s by a guy called Tommy Wharton,he was a ex ICI driver of about 30 years great guy.We had to do the course every 3 years,it got a bit boring after a few years but as was said, lessons well learnt and never forgotten. One Tom used to do was with ammonia in a dish placed in the middle of the room, then everyone put on gas masks and wentinto the room the door was closed then we were told to lift the corner of the rubber mask tll you got a whiff of gas then put the mask back down and get out.If you wasnt used to a gas mask it wasnt very nice. The blow up doll was always good for a laugh. cheers Ted.
Hi Ted, I remember the Portakabin on the car park at Castners, I also remember Tommy and his ammonia tricks and the trips down to Runcorn Docks for the fire part of the course, I was with Leathers / Hays (1970-2002) and along with RTS and Suttons I think we like the ICI drivers were the amongst the first to complete the ADR or Hazchem as it was known then.
Tommy always used to quiz us (Leathers drivers) about that incident on the M6 but we were under strict instructions not to discuss it much to Tommy’s disappointment, time and time again over the years he tried and failed to break our silence but failed to do so.
It is possible that we know each other, where did you finish up after the ICI closed the transport down.
FF
I went on the hazchem course with Tommy in the early 70’s and at least twice after that, I always enjoyed the banter with him. Some know it all drivers used to try to get the better of Tommy but he always knew best.
He told me the story about one of our drivers who wore a wig and when he rushed out of the ammonia room to get his mask off the wig came with it.
In later years we used to have to watch a video and get a card for each plant we went into at Runcorn.
My first time in ICI was to load HCL in 1969 and we picked up the notes from Banks lane.
The last eight years before I retired in 1998 I was on Sodium Hydrogen Sulphide, one a day to Dudley Tyne and Wear, back empty.
Russell.

Both Jim’s, Webb & Higgins are still alive but not so much kicking both are in poor health in one way or another, I filled in on that job occasionally but at that time 85-95 I shipped out of Plymouth or Portsmouth bound for Barcelona, I have two metal chairs in my garage that were salvaged from the Tor Caledonia that were going to be jettisoned somewhere in the North Sea still going strong in my garage, PM me with your details and I will tell them you remembered them.

ex Hoyer Fleet Engineer, who was on their emergency response rota and got called out to the Imperial tanker that lost the offside front wheel if I remember rightly and went off the M62, we transhipped the load into 9705 and the tractor was recovered with Imperial sending another tractor unit to collect the tanker.
I’ve a few more photos
