I may have posted this before but good to see it again.Photo off sadstiller who worked with me at Townsons
The Highwayman I drove looks modern compared to that John. What year was that taken.?
Russell.
When BP wanted 38 tonners on the contract I was driving a day cab Roadtrain with a spread axle tank.
Gilbraith had the tank refurbished and a tri axle put under it and I got a brand new High datum Roadtrain to pull it.
A young chap who was a lorry fanatic took the two photos below for me on the Park Street car park Hull.
The one below I took on the Southbound Lay by A6 just North of Garstang after tipping acetic anyhdride at Celenese Lancaster.
Below is the tank before the refurb with the Buffalo under it, a motor I couldn’t wait to get without.

No walkways, gaurd-rails, safety-harness, hi-viz, hard-hat, protective gloves, etc etc etc . And the job still got done, I bet with no more injuries etc than they have today!
I used to do five loads a week from Runcorn to Sterling Organics, Dudley, Tyne and Wear with sodium hydrogen sulphide.
One day Sterling Organics decided to take some photographs for a safety brochure they were making and asked me to put on all my safety gear for the photos.
I duly obliged but look at Billy McGuire stood underneath waiting for me to hand the sample down, looking up not even wearing goggles never mind chemical resistant suit.
Normally we didn’t take a sample we just went into the lab to get the notes stamped, it was the same tank every day and back empty.
ICI had already sent test results though on the whole batch and the customer accepted it.

No, because in those days we used our common sense, nowadays you need a risk assessment doing before you start the engine. H&SE helped to kill common sense.
Greetings all.I agree.I loaded and unloaded petrol the same way and am still here.H&S were very thin on the ground in my youth when the krauts were dropping shed loads of bombs on us.I dare say there are many like me still around.Keep up the good work.Regards,900x20.
Called in at Steve’s yard at Appleton Thorn today for a chat and I just happened to have my camera with me.
This is just one of his Volvo fh units & GP tanks
Steve says he bought the ERF to use has a shunt motor,it sounded has sweet as a nut.The Renault is just waiting to have its decals fitted but looks supurb inside & out.
Next we have Steve’s pride & joy his Scania 143,not in his usual livery, he’s kept it in the livery in which he bought it this is one cracking motor
He told me he doe’s do the odd load with it now and again.Steve is also a member of trucknet so I would like to thank him for sparing the time to chat with me and I will definately be calling in again to see him.
PS the arm & bucket dont belong to the Scania thats just my bad photo taking
Hiya John,if you had’nt seen the arm on the photo someone would of picked it out eh.Vic. (they are all nice looking motors)
Good photos John, I still think Mr Tabners tankers are the smartest on the road, Regards, Mizzo.
do like the tabners fleet and speaking to a few of the drivers its a good company to work for
You wont see much better than this on our roads its a credit to the driver.

Now that’s a nice rig !
It’s my opinion that it would look even better without the roof lights ect.
Just my opinion.
Three more old ones, any ideas where they may be taken, early 80’s ?
I’d guess the Molasses photos are Hull Docks, same dock as PO Ferries.

I couldn’t agree more, very smart without being O.T.T. The ERF Olympic is one hell of a a shunt-motor, personally I’d have that over the Renault!
