Sorry got it wrong, cafe on right not left leaving Cadishead. There was another further back towards Eccles on left towards W,ton just after going under M63 (it was M63 then) in a big lay-by.Anybody remember it?Maybe it’s still open.

I think you will find that one was called the Cara cafe .
It started with a caravan then a hut then a section garage like building . I posted in fav cafe’s about it just a day ago ,it was like a second yard for Ancliff’s and Bulk liquid transport , We got are breakfast from the cara
for the Ancliff(BLT) garage staff on Bulwark road

I remember Smith & Robinson tankers. They had 2 8 wheel tankers with Rolls Royce petrol engines ( fully sealed) so no one could see or tamper with them. Only R.R. fitters were allowed to touch them. They ran from Trafford Park to Proctor & gamble Purfleet. Only 4 miles a gallon, one driver was nicknamed Yorkie he had a big handlebar misstarch. I worked for Hills of Botley on contract

Thats a blast from the passed The Smith & Robinson RR petrols I thought they would have been long forgotten
by one and all . I was a kid just starting apprenticeship at Ancliff’ (blt) :open_mouth: The story’s about the speeds they would do was the stuff of Legend & exaggeration  .

Deported old tanker driver here. Yes,Tanker hire were part of CLS Group and I think they bought out S Protheroe of South Wales fame. The company KK mentioned was Bitmac from Scunthorpe who were benzole refiners with a plant in Scunthorpe and one in BSC Llanwern. The haulage side was called Barworth Transport and they had AEC MK5 Mammoth Majors, two being based at Llanwern, mostly collecting benzole from the local coking plants.

Hi KK. Not sure but they probably contracted for them. I saw a photo of two Bitmac tankers waiting at Tamworth Services for a changeover.A E Evans did a lot of work for Bitmac - one of the best jobs was pure Methanol from Scunthorpe to the Shell North Sea Gas plant at Bacton Norfolk and wet Methanol back to Scunthorpe where Bitmac extracted the water and sent the pure product back down, you could be on that job for weeks.

Ancliff’s I remember very well, though only the depot in Felixstowe, which originally was right next to the Little Ships Hotel near the dock basin, before moving to a purpose built site off Walton Avenue

I can still remember very well the Atki Borderers,Seddon’s and brace of Scania 110’s they had during the early 70’s as well as some of the driver’s.
Ken Cleaver,Reg Ablitt,Ray Baxter and Bert Moore to name a few.

I new Ken Cleaver when I was a kid 10 year old ish (1959) at Ancliff’s in Urmston and he was still there when I was taken on as the first Apprentice at the base I had to wait for the yanks to come over and give the OK for an apprenticeship plan in the group. Sorry to hear of his passing , has all-ways been on the list of good guy’s .

Rider200
Ken Cleaver came to work for Sadler Tankers at Oldham around 1989ish maybe later.Do you remember Larry Gilsenan who worked in the traffic office at Ancliffs.

I am an ex-calor man and have enjoyed reading this thread. I have uploaded some photos from my collection as calor transport at one time was the largest specialist tanker haulage company in the U.K. For the record they took over Monkton motors, Tyburn tankers, W.H palmer tankers, Pointer tankers, Arrow bulk and LPG transport

Welcome to Trucknet gravydavey cracking photos we look forward to you adding more.I am not sure for certain but I think there is a thread on here somewhere dedicated to Calor which will interest you,I may be wrong though :unamused:.I know theres quite a bit on this Tanker companies thread.
