Ken Cleaver came to work for Sadler Tankers at Oldham around 1989ish maybe later.Do you remember Larry Gilsenan who worked in the traffic office at Ancliffs.

Did Sadlers have a contract with Total Oil at one time John? There’s a Roger Kenney photo of an AEC MK5 Mammoth Major on the A62 passing Motorman’s café with an AJ Yorks North Riding reg, when Middlesborough was in that county.

Not has I know of Chris. They had with Cheveron,Burma,Q8,Phillips and also Pace Petroleum which was part of the Q8/Sadler group.

You don’t see these little urban-delivery trailers any more!

I remember the back of their tanks had a picture of a Lion with a slogan “The King of Petrol”,in the 70s.

That’s the one John.

That is a rare bit of kit nowadays then :open_mouth: , I not seen one for years! Regards Chris

will keep my eye out for it again and try to get it in a pic, or drive up and down oil sites road a lot

We had a 22 foot single axle rear steer at Shell Haven for a year or so.
There was no real need for such a trailer so it went off to another depot.

Sadly no photos of it.

Heres and earlier tank, mid nineties i would say

I do remember seeing that trailer in Wythenshaw in 1996.

I think it was a Lube Oil Trailer, definitely not a Spirit Tank.

Years ago i was on the ici petrol contract based in grangemouth. We had about 6 of these urban trailers, the contract was run by R RANKIN of Blaydon. We loaded fuel for sadler and Q8 and delivered it with ici livered tankers. When ici was taken over by Burmah Rankin put a Q8 livered tanker on and sadler pulled out of petrol in scotland. The ici job was one of the best jobs i ever had , when Burmah took over they done away with the urban trailers. Then p&o took over and the rest is history.

Yep definitely a lube oil tanker, for bulk deliveries into garages looks to have a steering axle as well, we ran a number of these at Hoyer when we first took over the Esso Lubes contract out of Purfleet

And the twin axled version, both trailers with steering axles, I remember when they first introduced this type of steering into the milk industry, took the drivers ages to get the hang of how they followed

This DAF CF unit was parked in a DAF garage on Malta the other week.
The colours resemble Shell, so maybe it was operated in the U.K. before being exported to the sunny island.

Apologies ( in advance ) if the photo is not the right way up . I can`t fathom how to correct this problem. :imp:

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Isn’t it sods law when you look back at pic’s you took in the past & you think "why didn’t I take 5 steps to the right/left & get the whole lot in? :unamused: ". In this pic’ I took in my Dad’s depot you can just see the trailer axle so you can make out that this single axle trailer was only about 23 ft long, affectionately known as “Little Betsy”, it was used for deliveries around some small country/village garages, but was mainly used to deliver Derv/Gas Oil round the ARC Quarries etc in Oxfordshire/Berkshire, & to various Haulage/Coach/ Plant firms etc. Regards Chris

We borrowed this little single-axle from Air Products, Rotterdam for a while & I ended up towing it round for about 18 months, first with the Wincanton ERF until my DAF was kitted out with Rota-select (Self-Pumping gear) & went to the spray-shop to be “Tango’d” :open_mouth: Because of problems with some of the old A.P. 6-wheelers we inherited we needed wagons urgently so this trailer was sat in Holland barely being used so we had it, bit of a pain to get in/out of some of our drops designed for 6 wheeler with rear-steer access, but often with a lot of hose-joining etc it did the job  .

This smart bit of kit appeared in Didcot a while ago (destined for A.P. France apparently). About 24 ft long I guessed, designed/built with specific job(s) involved I think!
