ANNIES PRIDE:
hi lads ! some good photos there i speak to jez everyday telling me great stories of the old days at syms when his dad worked there , as per norm these days are long gone pages like this can only bring back many a memory to the old and not so young!!! syms of calne were known as the triple six squadron on the cb my dad seems to remember. anybody remember this ? keep up the good work Andrew !
Hi ANNIESPRIDE, Triple six squadron, i’ll remember that next time i see Chris. Between Jez & Chris i’ve got some superb and priceless pics that i’m going to post…
Glad you all like them, as even from what i remember Syms had a smart fleet…
I can remember tipping several times in a Syme’s yard, but can anybody help my fading memory please?
I recall that I was driving a navy-blue 1628 SK Merc for Chiaramello’s (Ramsgate) and pulling an Italian registered trailer owned by Fercam (slaty-grey coloured tilt, chassis and bodywork) and I’d brought the loads back to the UK from the Milan area of Italy.
If it’s any help, I seem to remember that the loads were quite heavy, so there’s today’s challenge!!
Do any of you Syme’s lads have any ideas what job I was doing please??

I never got round to posting congrats last night on this thread! What a great outfit Symes were ---- my kind of operation! A proper haulier in the true sense of the word I remember seeing them up and down the road! And while I’m on Diesel Dave my apologies for contravening the rules! However with regard to your description of the outfit you were driving and its “quite heavy load” it sounds like the predecessors of VOSA should have given your outfit a “dose” of “editing”!!!Regards to all at TruckNet Bewick. (Professor in Anglo Saxon languages at the University of Road Transport) !!!.

Nice pic of that B-series Carl. I’m guessing that Roy Brake probably could’ve been an ex driver or could’ve well been an ex subbie. I’ll have to ask my mate " Chris Oldham " who had 16yrs on Syms.
Roy Brake drove for Syms of calne from the early sixties to his tragic death in Nov 1978. He mostly drove the night trunk from Syms yard to British Gypsum, Nottingham
His ERF B series MMR 909R left the road early one Nov morning with 20 ton of plasterboard and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
I travelled as much as I could with my Dad and loved every minute of it.
I bought KYR 408X in Oct 2008 and restored her in Syms colours as a tribute to my Dad and named her Pamela Lilian as a tribute to Mum. I have a few photos of Syms trucks and as soon as I get the hang of posting them, I’ll put them on.
Cheers Kev Brake

Cheers Bewick ! Syms & without question yours are a long gone breed of what we all used to love and enjoy about the industry.
Smart livery’s and an excellent well looked after outfit, and good kit too.
A bit off subject Bewick , but, I remember having a night out with one of your lads many years ago, he had the R cab 112 with the name " goalie john " on it. Small bloke, short black hair, nice bloke…

First things first ! sorry to hear about your Dad’s tragic accident nov 78’ . However long ago it was its always sad to lose a fellow comrade in such tragic circumstances…
Welcome to truck-net " brake1275 ", and welcome to the Syms thread . Thanks for clearing up that loose end regarding KYR 408X, all credit to you there she looks stunning. Look forward to when you get the hang of putting your pics on here, took me a while… . Send me a pm if you need any help. The more pics the merrier.
Aparrantly its 333( triple three squadron ) and not triple six, due to the phone No. on the cab doors. Well here we go then . TRIPLE THREE SQUADRON ! at your service…

Hiya Andrew thanks for the kind comment about Bewick Transport! unfortunately we live in a totally different world now to what Symes and Bewick operated in but thats supposed to be “progress” I rest my case(and my boiler suit and boots!).I will make enquires from the “archivists” about the driver you ask about.I can’t bring him to mind my-self though----we did have substantial workforce in later years and the old “grey matter” is a bit sluggish now at times!!! Cheers Dennis.
hi ya gunnerheskey your right about the triple 3 and not triple 6 . so i stand corrected sorry ! cracking photos like the globetrotter with 4 lights under bumper . thats a proper swede where you could always get home on a friday! spent many a hour in one of them with dad with the buzzer going !

No probs mate, the correct info got there in the end .
Can’t go wrong with the old MK1-2-3 F-series Volvo’s.
A very unfortunate incident has occured that i’m saddened to post.
The body of ex Syms driver Tont Perry 60, was found in the river marden in the town of Calne. It is thought he fell in whilst walking home after a night out with friends.
Police are treating it as a tragic accident… R.I.P Tony Perry…
