Supermarket van delivery driver

Anyone tried it? If so is it any good.

I hear the money is decent and the hours are rarely long.

A lass near me works for Sainsbugs on "home delivery. Starts around 6am … she is usually home around 2 30pm … but then one day she will do a “late” … starts around Lunch-time and finishes around 9 -10pm … but next day is her Day-off.
I think her biggest gripe is trying to keep to delivery window … also getting parked near enough to house to save carrying stuff too far … also customers complaining if items are substituted.
I know she also occasionally worries about “security” … particularly when she is on a “late” and is carrying loads of beer / wine. They have to keep the van locked.
I think the store she works from have just had Trackers / Microlise Driver Moniter System fitted … I don’t think she is too impressed with it so far :unamused: :unamused:
All this … but think of all those housewives … bored at home … opening the door in their nightie

I just need A flexible driving job haha.
I can only work on the weekends and 2 days in the week.

Hard to find such a job especially driving trucks.

Have you thought about breakdown recovery work? Every weekend could be a bonus for many firms, and mostly no tacho so could be able to work / earn more on your days on.

Is that what agencies are there for, , all you hear on here is it’s great i work when i want and don’t work when I don’t want
Pick and choose your own time
Maybe I’m wrong I never had to work for one

I looked into this, only downside I could see was not enough hours, they stated only 16hrs, money was good, and then after 6months store discount and profit share after 12 monthly, and then all them lonely housewives, but that might be a myth put about by Sunday sport reading tnuk members

I’ve yet to find a local agency that offers part time work regularly. I work for an agency atm and it’s usually with a firm for the entire week.

There is a local Argos distribution centre near me who might offer regular weekend work but I refuse to work there.

I’m sure it what user Daytrunker did.

Ayup, you mean some housewives wear a nightie with a door in it ?

If it was a viable alternative to truck driving then they wouldn’t be advertising for jobs all the time.

Hours are rarely full time & even if they are you are looking at sub £20k pay.

I worked for Asda for about 6 weeks in late 2017. they basically asked me how many days and hours I wanted to do.
£8.50 an hour but you weren’t allowed to do more then 48 hrs. If you work in a home shopping centre and have 2 runs you will take out one van and return to take a different van out. Personally it wasn’t for me.

I did it from 2007 - 2012 for Tesco, I haven’t worked for any of the other supermarkets so can’t pass judgement - good or bad.

I did my HGV licences late 2011 and stated working class 1 late 2012 as I wanted more money but …

Bottom line it was the best job I have had and I still miss doing it now, although I suppose it depends on the store you work from. I worked from one in a small market town in the countryside and you only went as far as 20 miles in any direction covering another 2 towns and every village in between, basically you spent most of your time driving round the countryside delivering to a lot of nice villages/houses. Plenty of time parked up grabbing a cup of tea etc due to customer time slots and not being allowed to deliver early. Days are spilt into 2 runs (morning and afternoon - you might not be out for one these but that wasn’t often, in which case you would be instore helping out picking orders, shelf stacking etc) and you always got a min of 2 hours between runs to unload trays, reload afternoon run and have your hour lunch back at store in the canteen etc, the whole day/runs/times planned by computer. All in all very relaxed and cushy job

As mentioned though, it depends on the store and its location - I could imagine a store in a bigger town or city probably wouldn’t be as much fun with flats/awkward drops/parking/a lot more drops etc.

Loved my rota too - I did Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri 9-7 so 40 hours but 36 paid as hour deducted for your lunch. If its something you are serisouly thinking about then look at the Tesco website for delivery drivers and filter your details e.g location etc and it will list the actual vacancies they have and the exact hours. Generally Tesco hours for van drivers are 8-6 and 9-7 for days and evening shifts are 6-10 and 7-11. If you are after a couple of days in the week and weekends I don’t think you’ll have too many problems although now when I look a lot of vacancies combine the days and evening shifts on your rota.

Downside is money, I left because at the time I wanted and needed more - was on £7.50 per hour back then and time and a half after 36 hours (you’ll be lucky if they still do time and a half) so no idea what it is now but would estimate around £8.50. I’m thinking of going back to it as getting fed up with this industry and all thats wrong with it (another 8 paragraph rant for another time).

i thought about this a few years ago, cos i thought it would be a cushy number, i mentioned it to a friend who, unbenown to me had done it, and he marked my card, first, why do people want delivery, cos theve got a HUGE amount of groceries, or they live 3 or 4 flights up stairs, and its not just individuals, its carehomes etc, who get a lot of deliveries, its a time demanding job. not for me,

I worked for Tesco too, for over 2 years, but in a busy store. Lots of flats (stair climbing), difficulty parking, driver shortages (which means extra deliveries on your run and getting back late, not more overtime). There was no spare time at all when I did the job. Then again, I had a reputation for getting the work done so I got all the hard jobs, the lazy buggers got given easier runs because otherwise they’d just bring shopping back undelivered. If I came in on a day off at short notice I might see a good run! Work hard, get penalised, beware of that in busy stores. Took me a while to cotton on as I was a bit ‘innocent’, first proper job really.

On the plus side, if you pranged a van, made a mistake etc, it wasn’t the end of the world, they expected it really. It wasn’t the worst job, but your experience will depend massively on location and that is no lie. I’d have loved a rural area instead. If you wanted easy work you could probably do overtime on another department as well (multitrain), I’d still get drivers wage if I went on till for example.

I am surprised and worried that this is seen as a better option to truck driving by some here, considering I’m making the switch the other way. I do know when I moved from Tesco van driver to bus driver, I earnt more than I ever did at Tesco, and I’m expecting another step up in wage once I get my class 1 to be honest

Thats my point about location and which store specifically you work out of. I can imagine some are a nightmare based on the above. Even taking that into account, I still believe its a lot more cushy and better on the whole than a lot of HGV jobs - assuming you can live with the fact its less money.

The one I worked in, on the rare occasion something went wrong or you had a busy run (very very rare it was too much to get it all done within your hours) and couldn’t get it done then the expectation from management was you brought the shopping back and it was then not your problem what happened after that in terms of it being resent out and delivered.

Class 1 pay is often crap but becomes decent due to the stupid hours.

Long as your fine with a minimum of 10 hours a Day and a average of 12+ it’s fine.

Heck I was even on a well paying job with the co-op £15 an hour but it was constant cab hoping between rigids and artics and the work was soul destroying.

Exactly, clearly there are exceptions and good jobs out there and good hours/pay ratio but they really are in a large minority. Add to that largely unsociable start times and long days and its easy to see why people become disillusioned with this industry very quickly.

Not a job I would fancy with any of the supermarkets, especially when I see them still running about on Saturday and Sunday evenings after 20.00 hrs (8.00 pm)

Tesco home delivery will not deliver to my house since I took the keys off the driver and made him sit in my garden shed whilst I unloaded the van in five minutes and then took 2 hours to return his keys and paperwork!
