a drive round brum…

Buzzer’s photo of Blackburn kindled a few memories, going by the ergo cab AEC or Leyland, the thruppenny bit FG also Ford ■■■■■■ and looks like maybe a Triumph as well. The Ergo cabs came out 1966 so ten or more years previously I would have been trundling along that road A96 on many a shift from Aberdeen to Inverurie at the wheel of a Leyland PD2 Double Decker, music to the ears that engine so able and so reliable.

The garage on the right in that pic is still there albeit not as a filling station.

Believe the old rail bridge has been strengthened & is now the road traffic bridge, Buzzer

There has been many suicides by jumping off the viaduct since it was made a road bridge. It is also closed for high vehicles in windy weather and diverted down Newton Cap Bank and over the old bridge

Simmons were a furniture shop (The FG Furniture van) but I can’t for the life of me remember where. I also remember a shell fish shop where they sold Oysters Welks etc Like a bar where you could stand at the counter and eat somewhere near there. My Grandfather used to take me when I was about 5-8 Thats where I got my love of shellfish causing me to have to buy a fresh lobster every week as part of my diet. I seem also remember a raincoat shop down there called Y.B.Wet

Looking at Buzzer’s photo on the right the rear end of a Citroen DS Safari wouldn’t have been many of them in Brum back then.

More likely could be a Humber Hawk Estate not a DS.

Fine body of lorry drivers here, are there any of you on it.

I have just been looking for that layby on Google Earth and I find it very sad that that great little country pub, about 500 yards back has fallen into disrepair. But what was the name of it  I can’t remember it now, can you ?

Maybe due to the small screen on my tablet, but I’m not seeing the Citroen.
In the parking area, from L to R, I can see: Anglia van, Morris Traveller, Vauxhall Victor wagon, Triumph Herald, Anglia sedan, Austin 1100 and Humber Hawk wagon.

A696, Bell Villas Ponteland.

Star down under.:

Yeah it could well be a Hawk estate, I’ll blame the Lucentis jabs and with an eye test coming up end of the month new specs could be advised
