Anybody using a “Stoneridge SE5000 Exakt” digi tacho, I’m having a little problem with mine.
When ever I turn the ignition On/Off, or start/stop the engine, it jumps to rest no matter what mode it was in before.
Rest is the default setting of that particular tacho. Mine does the same, others may default to other work or poa. The default setting can only be changed at an approved tacho centre, but the question is why spend the money? You are aware of what mode it defaults to, just adapt yourself to suit that.
Just to add to what has been said it’s not a Stoneridge problem, all makes of digital tachograph can be set to default to rest, it just depends on how they’ve been programmed.
Having a tachograph that defaults to rest can be a pain at first but you soon get used to it

Wrong.
On the SE5000 EXAKT or newer models, this setting is changeable by the COMPANY CARD holder
Insert company card, its self explanatory in the setting menu, just select DEFAULT ON MODE and DEFAULT OFF MODE to the “-” symbol which leaves the mode unchanged
Probably changed by the company to get drivers to take breaks on bays etc…
I had mine set to go to rest when ignition was switched off, then you never need to remember to put it rest, always better to forget to put it on other work than rest! When I need to record other work, I just leave the engine running, and it’s surprising how little or no rest is actually recorded doing it that way.
But each to their own on this one, there isn’t a right way or a wrong way.

With the cost of fuel these days I’m surprised your employer doesn’t go nuts about that
Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to use the mode switch

This used to be down by Workshop card holder only - I take it that has all changed now?

Yes, as far as I am aware it is only the new stoneridge units that do it, but I know first hand this is possible.
You can change the preset to any automatic activity change for both driver & co-driver when switching the ignition off. To do this:
- Insert a company card or a workshop card in either of the tachograph trays.
- Press the
button.
- Use the
and
buttons to scroll to the Settings menu and press
.
- Use the
and
buttons to select “Parameters” and press
.
- Use the
and
buttons to select “Default activ. key off” and press
.
- Use the
and
to select the preferred activity (e.g. “Rest”).
- Press OK to confirm. A “Changes Saved” message will appear to confirm the change.
Do the same but for Key On so it doesn’t go to work when you put the radio on.
Interesting, cheers. At last, something which can be done by the company as opposed to trotting off to the tacho centre and being charged for the pleasure.
There seems to be quiet a few tacho operational questions asked on here, it would be handy if there was a topic which outlined the different makes and firmware versions etc.
It’s pretty Micky Mouse to have it default to rest, should be other work in my humble of course.

When the other work takes less than a minute, and the truck would waste more fuel restarting, No!

Explain!

Every time you stop driving, you’re on other work not rest, at traffic lights say. You could be done for incorrect use of modes. You need to actively decide when to take your break. I’m not being preachy, just sayin’.

I think you’re not quite getting it SS. The tacho only defaults to rest (or whatever the default mode is) once the ignition is switched off, so consequently stopping at lights/junctions etc will merely make the tacho revert to other work, not rest.
Ahh ok, I never knew that. I still wouldn’t want it defaulting to rest every time I switched the ignition off as it’d be as if Michael J Fox was trying to decide wether to have a break or not.
I suppose in that case it just protects big firms with loads of muppet drivers who forget to select the right mode when on break so they don’t have massive infringement lists.

Never seen anyone post on here saying I forgot to put it on other work, but see plenty were they forgot to put it on rest/break!!
Like I said in an earlier post, I don’t do a lot of other work, so it’s easier to have it go to rest, you can’t get done for recording to much rest.
Muppetry doesn’t come into it, posting about something you obviously know nothing about is muppetry!

For what it is worth, I would imagine that too much rest and not enought work may well see Mr VOSA asking too many questions.

Only comment ive ever had off VOSA re breaks is, we like to see lots of breaks! so thats what they get.
Just to add, I know the difference between breaks and rest.
And imagining isnt reality.
^^^^
It was just a thought that too many breaks and not a comparable amount of other work could make them suspicious but then it all depends on the type of work you are doing.

That is wrong, they like to see WORK too, if your card shows Break/Drive/Break/Drive/Break/Drive they WILL start digging.
It is also known as falsifying records and could see you in front of the TC if it is a regular thing.
