Stobarts new volvos gas power

I was past the other week buy a new stobart volvo fm with what looked like it had a gas tank methane storage tanks on the passenger side instead of a derv tank is it something stobart and volvo are trialling duel fuel trucks i remember foden doing these conversions a few years ago first volvo i seen any ideas stobart boys and girls

Its called gas injection and it something my lot are trialling down south apparently. Not seen any myself.

Dual-Fuelâ„¢ is fitted onto a standard diesel engine, which operates unchanged, except power is generated by mostly clean natural gas. A measured quantity of natural gas is mixed with the air just before it enters the cylinder and compressed to the same levels as the diesel engine to maintain efficiency.

The natural gas mixture does not ignite spontaneously under compression, so the Dual-Fuelâ„¢ engine uses a small injection of diesel fuel, around 10% of the total energy of the fuel, to ignite the main charge of gas and air. This small “pilot” injection acts like a multitude of microscopic spark-plugs, setting off clean and efficient combustion of the lean gas-air mixture.

Natural gas burns cleaner than diesel due to its inherently low carbon content.

When Natural gas replaces 90% of the diesel through Dual-Fuelâ„¢ it can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25%, yet fuel-efficiency and power remain equivalent to that of the original diesel engine.

Clean Air Power believes that no dedicated natural gas trucks can match a Dual-Fuelâ„¢ truck for efficiency and performance.

Dual-Fuelâ„¢ Engine Technology Facts:

  • Engine runs on natural gas with diesel pilot ignition

  • At full power diesel fuel is 10% of total fuel - normal operation is up to 85% natural gas substitution

  • Runs on 100% diesel fuel until engine coolant is at operating temperature

  • Under normal operation, can run solely on diesel at light loads*

  • Under normal operation, can run solely on diesel at full power*

  • Uses a standard electronically-controlled diesel engine

  • Maintains electronic control of both gas and diesel injection

  • Automatically reverts to diesel only when gas supply is out of acceptable parameters

These do gas aswell, and they have abit on about it.

we have 2 globetrotter xls at downtons running this set up ,
no doubt stobart will say they are the first to do it though even though quite a few have had it a while

Warburtons did it years ago.

Ken.

Wisemans have been using it for a while now on there newer Dafs, there were also some Scanias at the old Corby Chilled ( Alcester)that had the “duel fuel” so it’s certainly not new technology but with the price of derv flying high and gas much cheaper,it makes it a more viable proposition. There was still a 53plate Scania at Hill Hire last year that had it fitted.I never noticed any difference whilst driving em.

Wait for the new channel 5 programme. Eddie Stobart Bombs and Bangers. As Jack winds his way along the East Lancs with a highly explosive load of methane. Another load of crap!!!

i think they still do as far as i know … fodens if memory serves .

This must stop you from useing the channel tunnel then as gas vehicles are prohibited

Yes , correct.

Save money , ■■■■ in a tank.
Save gas, ■■■■ in a money box

It is true stobarts have 5 new volvo fm’s using dual fuel… surprised there hasn’t been a thread about there nice shiney new volvo FH16 700 bought for the 40th anniversary. On reg plates S708 ART

Matt eakins who was on the tv programme drives that fh700. All the profits are being donated to Ronan Keatings Cancer charity

Owens of Llanelli trialled a few FM12’s on gas about 6 or 7 years ago.

Don’t think they’ve got 'em now.

Would you want to be singled out. I certainly wouldn’t. Transalliance was a great job, 3800 identical lorries and trailers :stuck_out_tongue:

Hiya …i think its 15 years ago since laura ashley had gas ERF,s… they shot off quite fast from the traffic lights if i remember.
You can now get a gas injection to a 2 litre diesel engine to make them run more efficent.
as you say eddie will be the first to run on gas… like he did with uniforms!! oop,s i forgot that gulf oils had drivers suits 20 years
before you saw a green stobart truck driver,s suit
John

I’ve driven the gas powered fodens for something to do with Hardstaffs, they are zb, no power at all, I was doing 16mph up a hill on the motorway :open_mouth:

I drove lng gas powered foden alpha`s on the co-op. There was a noticeable difference in power when it switched over onto gas.
22 pallets of spuds on a fridge coming over the a66 from penrith :open_mouth: :open_mouth: Cyclists and tractors used to pass me

Looking at the rubbish programs put out about Stobart they have cornered the market in “bull****” anyway so they may as well take advantage of the “WINDFALL” and use it as a green fuel.
