Just taken a closer look and I’m even more confident than I was before… Anyone that is comfortable behind the wheel of an artic would absolutely ■■■■ that!!!
I lived close to this location for many years and can tell you that this is not the first artic to try this manoeuvre and all have finished up in the exact same position. I had a picture published in the Oldham Chronicle may years ago of an ERF stuck in the exact same place will try and find if i can and post it here. Don’t be fooled by the location picture believe me the camera does lie it iS far tighter than it looks.
Fair comment - if you say it ain’t do-able then I’ll take your word for it.
Google Streetview can definitely be deceptive and make things look less tight than they are but I think there was more road available to the Stobart driver than he used though even if ultimately he still wasn’t going to be able to make it.
[zb] can happen to anyone. The Hungarian bloke, who was stuck in Colchester is a very experienced driver, not a rookie. They are doing thousands of miles all over Europe, but he made a similar mistake.
I have stated that I believe the turn is doable - although not 1 I’d like to do and if I saw it, I’d honestly drive past.
BUT, it definately is not enough room to 180 an artic, not on any planet, and trying the ole’ “anyone with any skill” argument is just stupid. A) I know the location in person and B) it doesn’t even look possible on the images or map either = C) anyone with any skill wouldn’t even attempt it
Seen a stobart transporter on the M18 during the week
[/quote]
You may have done, but it wasn’t a Stobart driver driving it. Autologic have approx 10 “12” plate transporters which they bought on the cheap when another transporter firm, Quantum, went bust earlier this year. These trucks are currently being resprayed into Stobart colours, (complete with a big ‘Stobart’ banner on the top deck safety rails), and the drivers are being forceably ‘wrapped’ into new uniforms as well. That means whilst they are loading, and everyone else is walking round in dark blue uniforms, they have the humiliation of walking round looking like a Christmas decoration. As the safety rails on modern transporters stick out from the bodywork of the transporter, there appears to be a competition to see who can knock the stupid banners off first…
looking at the google streetview picture i think it looks do-able if you went out to the wrong side of the road and took a big swing left. it looks like the driver went to take a big swing but maybe met a car coming the other way so didnt take the swing he should have.

I agree 100% that streetview is deceptive. It makes streets look twice as wide as the really are. I was given a delivery to do in an artic before. I knew the drop in question from my Lynx Express days. It was a struggle even for a 7.5t to get into. I told them it would require a smaller vehicle to deliver to the job, but they checked it on Google streetview and told me it looked ok for a trailer to get into. I had to agree that it did look ok on the computer screen, but I could assure them it didn’t look like that in reality. They did take my word for it in the end though.

Could of been a new driver on his first run, nerves/inexperience/pressure may of caused him/her to do it. Probably sat in a dark corner with their confidence and dream shattered.

I 100% disagree Wayne mate
Well ‘Fbb11’ have you ever been anywhere near this road in your time as a professional driver ? If not why do you feel the need to say that you could ‘spin it round’ or even get down the lane to the left if you have only seen a googleview image of the place. I know this turning very well and you wouldn’t spin a 45’ trl round there without digging the rear o/s corner of the trailer into the grass banking on the offside, it is just too tight to do a 180 turn. Turning down into Wall Hill Rd. is just about possible but you have to know the turn well and have to take most of the right hand side of the road up and this is on a road that has almost blind bends coming into it from both sides also most car traffic hammer it up and down this road and anything that is doing a low speed manouvre is going to end up with something embedded in their sideguards.
But what do I and the other guys who know this area well have to contribute It does seem that some people these days know much more about the game than we will ever do, what with geekle street view, ubook , face tube and twitterz The computer image never lies
@‘Fbb11’ if you think you can spin a 45 footer round at that spot without damaging the unit or trailer then all you have to do is PM me, and as I only live about 20 mins away, I’ll meet you there and if you can do it I’ll buy you yer breakfast Are you up for the challenge

Hi Dave, Like i said in a previous post i lived nearby in Delph and Denshaw for over 40 years and have seen many artics come a cropper on this corner, especially when the factory of Cunnington and Copper was open, none ever made it and all had to be recovered. Unless you are there on the ground you have no idea how tight that comer is. Once you are commited there is no going back as you would have no traction to reverse back up due to the adverse camber of the corner. I have been driving artics for over 30 years now and there is no way i would attempt it from that direction. Someone in another post also mentioned the corner at Greenfield station which is in no way similar to the top of Wall Hill Road and as you probably know is easy to negotiate. Let me know if you arrange a ‘left turn event’ and i will be there All the best Dave. Regards Paul

And me, I’ll come too. I’m only in Ashton under Lyne, so about 15 mins or so

That was me, I actually said that I do that turn quite regular to avoid traffic on Woodhead when coming from Barnsley area back to Oldham. I wouldn’t call it easy to navigate though, but a damned site easier than the 1 at Wall Hill Road.
Well that’s 3 of us who know the area well and have a wealth of class 1 driving experience between us but there are always those who know better but have much less experience or knowledge and are sure we are wrong
I’ve set a challenge to ‘Fbb11’ let’s see if he take’s it up I doubt it somehow but we will we see. I’ll just make sure I’ve got the number of Stoneywood Recovery’s in my pocket if he ever does.

No I don’t think, I KNOW I could. It’s a piece of ■■■■ with loads of room!!! You would have to drive on the wrong side of the road and turn left into it then back out but there is plenty of room to get the unit round in that side turn.
You’ld back out ONTO the main road (road markings)? Given the drop in the side turning even in a truck it looks difficult to see above the wall. I don’t know the road, or the circumstances but that choice isn’t one I would make.
That junction cannot be done with a full length triaxle trailer, an urban steerable maybe, the turn into Wall Hill road is not just sharp but it becomes quite steep, even by using the path you’d still not make it as the trailer would just pivot, when you’d want it to actually follow you.
Just done a thingymabob with powerpoint, the red lines are measured at 13.24m x 2.50 m using google earths ruler.

No not back out as in reverse out, back out as in go back out onto the main road.
