Sports direct

Seems even the big boys aren’t immune from the naughty corner :open_mouth:

Sports Direct reprimanded over its lorry driver standards

Oh dear. Looks like that transport operation is being run by a bunch of clowns.

Glad they have been found out.

Probably meaningless for a company like that when they can just get DHL or whoever in.

In my view a lot of the problem with trailers being dropped is down to the DVSA and the lack of info in the driving test.

Not an excuse I don’t think. Surely an outfit of Sport Direct’s size would make sure their drivers knew how to couple & uncouple properly. Driving assessments?

Having been a transport manager there’s only so much you can do bar total handholding the whole time. In all honesty if between the test and all the DCPC training if they can’t turn out drivers that can safely couple up something is wrong.

I don’t know, it may have been a total shambles there, and badly needed a kick up the arse but I would also suspect a lot of the speeding offences will very shortly not have been offences at all.

Nonsense, this problem is caused by a toxic work environment. Rush, rush, rush etc.

don’t get how a trailer falling of on the m1 can be driver error, even without a tug test the trailer would have fallen of way before traveling on the m/way with all the stop start to get out depot should I would have thought it would have slipped off before getting onto m1 unless of course they had changed over in a services and fell of on slip road of m1

Are you saying that drivers feel under such "rush rush " pressure that they try to save a few seconds by rushing the coupling of a trailer ?
Can I ask if you have ever been told by your boss that you are taking too long to couple up ? I would have thought any driver worth his salt would not try to save a few seconds on such a vital safety issue no matter how much he felt he might under pressure generally to get the days work done ?
Regards. John.

Don’t see how it’s a simple case of the trailer not been coupled right, the sports direct depot is a good 20 mins drive from the motorway so it’d have come off before teaching the M1 if it wasn’t coupled right.

i worked for a company that asked a driver to ‘find another job’,because according to the MD he was taking to long to strap his load down on occasion, and deemed he was stringing the job out as he was on hours.

I agree lots of bosses have no idea, and make stupid statements as to not working fast enough.Coupling a trailer is not a task that you can " string out ",but strapping a load is. Depending on the size and type of the load to be strapped, the time needed to do it correctly and safely will vary by a big margin, and if the boss watches someone out of the office window strapping a load, it’s not hard to spot if some one is just doing it correctly or " tossing it off ".

You can drive quite a long distance with out the trailer coming off. One of our ex drivers managed to do a delivery and the trailer only came off when he went over a rather large speed bump in our yard on the way back.

Look at the Fat controller that own the company

The problem was that none of their drivers knew about the red safety indicator on the coupling. They just did a tug test.

The defect procedure is not good. I personally defected a trailer twice for an ABS light fault and it still hadn’t been sorted the third time that I had it (trailer 64).

Most of the office staff are not in there on merit, but because they are long-term and can no longer drive due to diabetes.

Was never asked to speed, though most of the men put the tachograph on break at shops and take their breaks on the way back if single manned.

I worked there a few times and their maintenance isnt the best, not trained mechanics and as someone else said a lot of office staff are unfit to drive thru health

That is naughty, especially when things like MOT Failures go negatively towards your O-Licence (OCRS)
