DescriptionApplicants must have LGV Class C or C + E (HGV I or II) licence (minor points considered) and a basic knowledge of spoken Polish. Duties to include delivering food in and around the Bedfordshire area. No nights out.
How to applyYou can apply for this job by telephoning 07961 853441 and asking for Mrs Anna Garbat.
Unfortunetly Palts is Estonian so that cancels him and 99.9% of all British drivers out then, but ofcourse, isn’t that the intention?
Who would make speaking any amount of Polish a criterea for a job delivering food within Bedfordshire unless there intention was to only employ a Polish person?!?!
Is this actually legal? The offical language of this country is English and as the job does not involve going to Poland there is no basis for the need of any Polish language skills and as such, this is discriminating against all those who speak no Polish, which ofcourse are the British drivers.
I will look into the legal and moral issues in this Job advert!
Jammy mate, can you please pm me where you found this advert!!!
also
Does anyone here have any association past or present with this company■■?(or know anyone who does) either as a driver or otherwise? please pm me if u do.
Could they be looking for someone who speaks Polish so they can interpret between office and possibly Polish drivers that may work for this company? Or am I just being a bit cynical?
Answers on a postcard please…

Kalm i just came back to make exactly the same comment maybe they got too many polish drivers and now need an interprator.
Either way its still discriminating the almost entire population of British Citizen drivers. Surely the correct way forward for this company if they do have Polish drivers, would be to have Polish drivers who actually spoke some English, the language of the country they are afterall working in.
This is setting a precedent for a scenario of a certain New Ross based company in Ireland who according to their own website until recently, will only consider OFFICE WORKERS who can speak Polish. I suspect this will mean that only Polish citizens will be employed thus making the need for even more Polish speakers who can communicate with the existing Poles. If this is to be the case, it needs to be brought to attention and we need to make a ■■■■ big fuss about it. When people who only speak English, are barred from a driving job that only involves driving in England, things have gone too far. Does anybody disagree?

Whilst driving is a universal occupation and is open to all I do feel that being able to speak the language of the country in which you work is a neccessaty(sp). Less confusion, better communication, and hopefully a safer working environment for all. Plus everyone understands when you call them a bunch of “ZB”.
However, under the same working conditions as we get, I have no problem with migrant workers being here, and surely we were all immigrants somewhere from our past.
I suppose looking at it in a professional manner…they are simply looking for a driver who can speak polish…not necessarily a polish person…but a brit …so long as he can speak polish…there are many poles living in this country.and children of poles who stayed here after the war…so their natural language is polish…even though they are british citizens…no problem here then…just looking for that extra on the c.v…also look at the wording…must have the LGV C licence…which means they will not employ a recent arrival who wants to drive on his e.u.licence for the next 12 months…which he is entitled to do…as we all know Tesco has recently employed polish drivers because they cannot get drivers to fill their vacancies within the uk and have had to import drivers from the eastern bloc…and are paying them uk wages…obviously not enough to attract uk drivers…but i thought tesco drivers was on about £30 grand a year…obviously the shortage of good qualified professional drivers will only make things worse for us…and better for the foreigner…

And if you believe that…
From what I hear Tesco are subbing out a lot of their deliveries so as to get rid of agency drivers, and eventually their own drivers, so I guess using foreign drivers is an interim thing.

I dont think any of us would have a problem with this advert at all if the requirement to speak Polish was removed. The only purpose of this advert can be to ensure a very high likely hood of a Polish citizen or a British citizen of Polish origin will get the job. This ofcourse is blatent discrimination because it is promoting a single ethnic or national group and denying the job to anyone of any other group. Whilst I have no proof at the present time, I’m confident that statistics will show that Polish language skills are largely the preserve of Polish people or those of Polish origin and it is not a language to which any great number of ‘outsiders’ will speak. Therefore this job more or less tells anyone who is not Polish, not to apply.
I think we have to excercise a bit of calm here, there are still plenty of jobs for class 2 and class 1 drivers not requiring polish or any other language, and it’s not as though the job is at a premuim rate. I expect that most of you are right in thinking that they have a few polish drivers and need an interpretor and herein lies the flaw, it’s ok employing someone who can’t speak english whilst everything goes A OK, it’s not so hot when things (which they generally do) go wrong.
And anyway the British always have the last laugh, look what we’ve done to property prices in France and Spain. Find a nice area of Poland and it won’t be long before we’re are buying holiday homes.

I dont agree.
Either all discrimination is wrong or all discrimination is fine, there is no middle or grey area. If its ok for this advert to be worded in a way that practically makes sure only Polish applicants will be accepted, then it must be equally ok for a job to be advertised in such a way that it effectivelly bans British Asians or Blacks to apply. If such were to be the case the whole anti-racism bandwagon would grip you by the throat, yet when this happens people dont say a thing. Discrimination is discimination, it doesnt stop being as such when the victim is British. Plus, if they want a ■■■■ interpretor then they should employ one, not a driver to do that job. Does this mean all future drivers at this company have to be Polish? the more they have the more they’ll need if communication is a problem. The fact remains the same, there is no reason whatsover that a job based in Bedfordshire, delivering food only within Bedfordshire should be availbe only to those who speak Polish.
Bedfordshire is not in Poland
The language in Bedfordshire is English.
If they want to communicate with drivers then the drivers should speak English.
This is discrimination against me and every other British citizen who doesnt have the honour of a Polish background.
Also, am I right in thinking that any driver (and their company?) who doesn’t speak English and is carrying hazardous within England will be breaking the law because his trem card will only be written in English, thus he is unable to take any action in the event of an emergency.
