i love the picture with the sherpa thats gone for a swim!!

anyone got any more?

One of Bromilows fellow subbies had a spanish dodge on bulk tipper work they decided to sent it on M/E but the subbie wasn’t allowed to go (another story) Another driver took it I was sent with him to lead the way. Through out the trip the driver kept complaining that the oil warning light would come on then go out again. When we got back to Chech it stayed on all the time. One of our other trucks was a couple of days behind with a straight bar and he towed it home. When it was stripped down it was discovered that no ‘key’ had been fitted to the oil pump drive from new, the gear was loose on the shaft! Went like a rocket when it was going though!

:sunglasses: hi gavin, just thought id let you know that i actually drove one of them spanish dodges for a firm not far from were i used to live in dorset,(SHAFTESBURY)do you remember a company called goughs from ludwell,on the A30 shaftesbury to salisbury road, they used to do a lot of bananas/tomatoes from sheerness docks, well the first time i drove one was i impressed, i had a full shoot of tomatoes on for exeter and did that motor pull, thought they might have took off in the uk,but as fast as they came in they seemed to disapear, but in all honesty they were some motor,(well for the 70,) :unamused:
thoughs were the days.

The one we ran was a 300 with a round the corner fuller, that went like a rocket as well. Smiths of Wem, Shropshire. ran a fleet of them as well.
Robert

My Brother ran an M reg one , the fastest I’d ever done Coventry to Southampton was with that motor, 20 ton of pop 2 hrs dead, this was before the M40 and the Newbury by-pass, early in the morning I’ll admit. Also had a BRS rental one the first week they put them on the road at Cov while my Atki was in for MOT, R reg 1976 couldn’t get them to go into low range up Warmington Hill on the A 41.

Just looking through some stuff and found this…

hiya,
Anyone mentioned James’s of Northumberland they had plenty on tipper work, they was a bit nippy down the A1.

hiya,
Spot on Chris on both colour and location, I think they did coal south and when that finished they seemed to vanish, never saw one stopped so never knew any of the drivers.
thanks harry long retired.

We had one at "Sykes Bulk Liquids " but it was only used on local day runs and Pickfords had a few as did Whewells tankers of Radcliffe I think they were a wagon which some loved but most people hated them but I guess it depended on what type of work you were doing as they were a flying machine but were not so reliable

Johnnie,do you remember Frank Philips,Sheffield ran a few.One driver was called Curly and he used to trap on a bit with his,but he couldn’t catch my Marathon.

Hi Chris

It was at Pingewood just outside Reading - near to Burghfield - stolen and then dumped .
I’ve also got some pics of an overturned Constructor at Wargrave pumping station - one of Chinehams Constructors in an accident and a broken down
Bedford 4x4 tanker. At the time Reading Garage did a lot of the maintenance for Thames Water.

Thanks
Steve
