South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Having a break at Swansea docks

Taking 16 tonnes of sand to a sports ground above Maesteg

That’s a blast from the past, I remember the Shillibier trucks when I was in South Wales. are they still about.

By now, Shillibier had the British Dredging contract for running sand out of Swansea docks. Here, I’m delivering to a Brit Dred customer in Caerau called D&M Supplies. In the summer, the bushes at the right of the pic would grow out and always pull my mirror forward so I’d end up reversing in blind on the nearside (couldn’t drive in, no room to turn around)

My father was working for Protheroe when I was in Nottage Primary too. Maybe you may have had a lift with us also. I remember him coming home for breakfast at about 8am and then take me to school in his tipper. I remember being amazed that I could see over the wall of Nottage Court and look into the garden.
Yeah, we often used to cycle up to Stormy down. I wonder if I could still cycle up THAT hill today
Next time I’m down in Porthcawl, I’m going to call in and see that Fab truck of yours and get a few pics of me sitting in it

Shillibier bought me this Daf and sprayed it in the British Dredging Liv (part of the contract) I used to love this truck. Everybody knew it was ME driving it as it was the only Brit Dredg truck delivering from Bridgend to Carmarthen. If you saw this on the M4 above Port Talbot then it was ME driving it

Me in F33 BWN (owned and operated by Shillibier Haulage)

hi richard,
am ashamed to say that i forgot  your father drove for protheroe’s.though bill nash did also.didn’t tony (rip) leave bill’s albion in pto when we were playing in the cab one dinner time  .when bill went up west road,he hit a bloody tree, cause the body was up three rams, lucky he was empty    .

This truck was soooooo fast. It would do 85mph, I’d watch the speedo needle bending as it went past 80. I remember the young Shilly fitter Ginger Chris pulling up along side me on a duel carriageway at a set of traffic lights in his Ford ■■■■■■ Mexico. He beeped his horn and challenged me to a dabble. I was empty so I accepted his challenge… As the red light changed to green, I floored it and left him standing. I watched in my mirror as his mexico got smaller and smaller and smaller. He never forgave me for that as he was trying to impress his female passenger. If you see him, ask him about it, he freely admits he was burnt off by G917 LTH.

here’s one of you standing next to j&m’s atki.abbey shunter sdw 903,ex steel company of wales motor, gardner 120,power house  ,driven by arthur underhill a.k.a. “the big a”.

My first Scanny. It had Stallion tipping gear which was rubbish. If you had more than 5 kilos up the front, then it wouldnt tip. The fitters from Stallion were forever coming down and fixing the rams. They would stay in a hotel in Porthcawl. I remember one day “Rocket Ron” Hunt (R.I.P) arrived on site to tip some top soil. He engaged PTO and started to rev. After a few seconds, he looked in his mirror and saw that the body wasn’t rising. He jumped out of the cab to see if he’d burst a hydrolic pipe. It was then that he noticed that the ram had gone through the floor of the skip…through the soil… and was now standing fully extended high and proud like a flagpole
