Hi Pete 359, great to see these shots of Joints…I can hear the ERF now…, remember them dropping tandems to be converted to tri axles, at Malcolm Hutchinsons, Buckley, just after 38 ton came in, one of our old axles from a scrap trailer went onto one of them!, along with a couple Shones had done!, triaxle twin wheels, and those back axles that used to suffer with “slack nuts”!! so to speak
Speak soon Steelboy F10

hi graham,
thanks mate.am looking forward to the weekend .great to hear you are coming to the lar in july.how about this for a proper truck?,can’t say i really buy into the erf thing, but this motor after some early teething troubles served joint very well.though it was never as good as the sk mercs.14 litre 320 ■■■■■■■ and a twin splitter.seen on the wash with it’s driver, sammy dog.

Whats that footwear he’s got on ----- trainers by the look of it!!! dear oh dear!!! were they toetector trainers or what?waterproof as well by the look of it!! This is a shot of an odd Crane Fruehauf I bought in about '75 and its landing legs were set way back,it would have coupled to Andrew’s Pete dead easy!!! Only kept it a year or so as it was an accident waiting to happen!
hi dennis,
we have repaired enough, “rear of cab damage” over the years to know just what can happen when coupling to a deep pin trailer .
regards andrew.

fairplay andrew cracking pictures of the joint fleet , i ll probably have a bit of flack of dennis boy for rope/sheeting skills cheers martyn.
You must have a guilty consience Martyn!!! did you sheet and rope that trailer?or did someone else? The back end looks a mess and from what I can see of the fron’t----no further comment!!! But I suppose you steel men were just used to sheeting Coil and Flat stuff!! Would I be right in thinking a load of sawdust would not be regular traffic, just a “fill in” so to speak? I bet that Andrew just put the shot on of the finnished job to get some “banter” going at your expense!!! If I’d been there on that day I’d have got my boiler suit out the boot and sorted it out for you—and “two fingers” to the photographer mate!!! Cheers Dennis.
hi dennis thanks for the kind comments only justpassed my class 1 before joining joints it may look like a dogs dinner compared to yours never done flat work before .the main thing is i never lost a load or had an accident in any of thier trucks.cheers martyn.

Were you one of the few that never came to grief then? !!! Cheers Dennis.
you would be correct in your thinking i had a good grounding with a company called davies bros who ran 8 wheel tippers.
after working with them for a while driving an old foden dump truck (fitted with a gardner180 ) they put me through my test in a scammell routeman if you broke down they give you ■■■■ even if it was nt your fault so you afraid everytime you had to ring in with a problem .
the germans at thyssen krupp in duisburg, didn’t know what to make of this joint motorways home made coiler.looks like an anderson shelter, oops, don’t mention the war!

They were quite similar to a Volvo FL looking at them from that angle Andrew.
Cheers Dave.
hi dave,
yes they do look similar.though joints never had any fl’s.they fell out with volvo when they ran two f86’s.they never bought another volvo again, also turned down several offers of demonstrators over the years.here is an iron lung sk merc.d38 lwn
coming up the long straight after the bridge over the river wye at glasbury, one of the shrewsbury drivers heading back home.
pete 359:
the following three images were sent to me by an ex-joint motorways driver, tony gardiner.i had left by the time tony worked for joints, though i remember his dad roger very well,a good man sadly missed.i recognise these images as joints last “shrewsbury yard” as we welshmen called it.hanwood near minsterley just off the a5,joints used this yard to the end of trading in january 1999.thanks tony, good to contact you as a result of the thread, that’s what this, to me is all about.
I think the Scania that was posted by Andrew is the one I posted a long time a go . It was one of the scanias that my dad Roger Gardiner RIP and Warwick drove from the. Shrewsbury depot . Tony

This takes me back a bit, is this the junction heading south from Penderyn, and the old main road through town?
It looks like Maldwyn Davies garage in the background, before he moved to the corner of the Rhigos mountain road near Tower colliery.

Well Martyn, how did you rate that ERF. I had a F reg E320 6x2 twin steer, with a twin splitter and it was spot on.
I must admit It would fly, and handled superb. I remember back in 1989 running coal into Llanwern and approaching the Bryn Glass tunnels when an F10/12 of Macdonalds past me flying until he hit the bank. I just pushed him all the way up and past him as if he was standing.
My mate had a Strato 4x2 E320 but with a 12 speed Eaton, the top 4 you could split. He couldn’t live with me either.
As it happens on a sad note, I pulled on the stockpile one day and a Joint ERF with a steel trailer was on its side, wasn’t you I hope.
Great pics and material as always, Paul.
hi adrian, how you keeping you been talking to carl who works with me the joints pics r getting good every time andrew puts them on im meeting norman after going out for family meal julie birthday when we gona c those photos mate , john

b532 acy was the sister motor to b804 aep.was driven from new by adrian jenkins.
hi andrew,B532ACY was new about a month before 804 and as you say i had the wagon bran new.after about 5weeks a chilton tipper was tipping next to me and his ram collapsed and it fell on top of my cab.wrote the cab off and alan jones gave me a rollocking for tipping up next to that firm as theyd had a couple tip over.didnt ask if i was ok.typical!she had a new cab fitted to her at 5/6 weeks old.although it was gutless it was heaven to have a bunk to kip in on a night out.i had to drop 2 gears when she saw a bank.still, after atki,s and leylands it was luxury to drive.no night heaters but i used to reach out of my sleeping bag and start her up on fast idle and in 5 mins it was lovely.i see the photo of ATH661V wich Billy the cap had new but i had it for ages after him.poachers did the cab up and cost joint a few grand and then not long after the engine wore out.she,d earned some money by then though.nice to see the old girl again though.
hi paul the erf in the picture was a flying machine i never remember any problems with the truck the only problem with it was you could nt keep it on 60 on the motorways it was quite high geared you d be away with fairys then look at the speedo and you d be on 80mph i cant remember having it that long before i was offered a 1635 merc eps which was onother good truck ,did most of my driving on bulk tippers and to this day never been on my side cheers martyn.
