hi dennis,
at their peak,50+ tractors on the road,20+ shunters and approx. 120 trailers, mainly flatbed coilers, skelly coilers and bulkers with coil wells.they also had a few subbies, one long time former subbie from lichfield has come a very long way since his days subbing to joint, built up a fine fleet.here is a photo of sammy dog loading baled sawdust at john nicholas timber in port talbot.

pete 359:

fairplay andrew cracking pictures of the joint fleet , i ll probably have a bit of flack of dennis boy for rope/sheeting skills cheers martyn.

pete 359:
taken at bryngwyn steelworks gorseinon, now a housing estate.

that must have been me behind the marathon waiting for my load.cheers martyn.

hi all,
in sunny porthcawl, the circus is in town.i went down in my truck this evening to get us some photos.i have to say that when i saw the state of the bodged up pile of garbage that they run,i wondered why i bothered   .how these motors escape the vosa men,i will never know :open_mouth: .

You must have a guilty consience Martyn!!! did you sheet and rope that trailer?or did someone else? The back end looks a mess and from what I can see of the fron’t----no further comment!!! But I suppose you steel men were just used to sheeting Coil and Flat stuff!! Would I be right in thinking a load of sawdust would not be regular traffic, just a “fill in” so to speak? I bet that Andrew just put the shot on of the finnished job to get some “banter” going at your expense!!! If I’d been there on that day I’d have got my boiler suit out the boot and sorted it out for you—and “two fingers” to the photographer mate!!! Cheers Dennis.

Thanks for that Andrew,I always imagined Joints to be a much larger outfit, nevertheless I suppose in the hot bed of competition that existed in South Wales a fleet strength of 50 + 20 internal shunters was a sizeable fleet to have been created.Dennis.

pete 359:

hi dave,
that’s the same circus.these erf’s were hauling the seating.

hi dennis,

I don’t think that Showmans/Circus motors have to be tested, least I never saw any come through the Milnthorpe MOT.I’ve “serviced” a few fairground motors in earlier years and they were all without exception “close to the bone” in every way,Tyres, brake linnings ect. There may have been a change in the rules lately to bring them into line but by the look of them circus motors its not having much effect!! Dennis.

hi dennis,
these circus motors, must have been test exempt.some of “the anoraks” on the show circuit have told me that vosa are attempting to close this.telling me that my truck would no longer be test exempt.i have just renewed my road tax and the dvla still state that mine is test and type approval exempt :sunglasses:

next stop,is a town near you.
