not sure about ross garages northern depot,i will ask my mate he would know.here’s one for bewick.this foden may or may not have been a gwynne bowen motor.the owner i think is from malpas cheshire?i took this photo at this years dylan thomas road run.
Don’t misunderstand me Pete ! when I was a teenage trailer mate I suppose I thought the Bowen Fodens were the Dogs but I soon came to realise as an operator that Fodens had had thier day and I never ever gave them any consideration .Probably I should have tried one or two as my great grandad Thomas Bewick bought a good number of Foden steamers straight from the factory in the early 1900’s !!! Keep on posting the pics Bewick.
totally agree with you there bewick.as an operator you must always think and buy with you’r head not you’r heart.some of thomas bewick’s foden’s were :m3102 “excelsior” and m5527 “dorothy”.

You are a fountain of knowledge Pete!! the steamer "Dorothy"was named after his daughter who I knew as great aunt Dora ! I have some framed B/W photos of the old man and his son (John) standing in front a steamer hanging in our hall . “M” was the origional Cheshire No. but Thomas Bewick operated from Hamsterley Colliery in the northeast of England . 1987,part of a large crane that joint’s brought down from alfreton.during the 1987 hurricane a bridge in west wales was destroyed amongst many other things, therefore a large crane was needed to fish a train out from the river.
joint’s had one trombone trailer jm74.that trailer when fully opened was 75 feet long, may not seem that large these days, but remember that’s a non-steering trailer!jm74 was used regularly as hofa engineering who make railway lines were just across the dock.
G’day,
great pics again. Was the bridge that was swept away in the 87 hurricane on the train line between Llandeilo and Carmarthen? not that far down the line from N A James’ yard?
Talking of N A James, here’s some pics I took in their yard back in 95
This old banger was the yard shunter, apperently is used to pull a fidge up to London.
Interesting that they did M/E work back in the day. I was in their yard a couple of years ago when I was back in the UK and in the office is quite a few pics of the motors they used to run, including an orange 6x4 F89 that was used on low loader work, anyone got any pics of it?
Cheers Jamie
Pete That 8 legger Foden (YMA) was new to British salt Middlewich, pop onto the Peak District site and you can see her when Gordon Stead was doing
bagged lime out of Buxton. Its on the last page.

hi jamie
great n&a james pictures,a mate of mine from ammanford knows alan james well,i will ask my mate if he can get some photos?i was trying to think where we took those crane ends in 1987,i think you are right,as i recall it was a railway bridge and the train stopped just before the bridge was washed away?sorry to be so vague.
Hi Jamie,
The bridge where the train tragedy in the 80’s,was just outside Llandovery. You can see the new bridge off the A40 about a mile from Llandovery on the left hand side as you head for Llanwrda. I think three people drowned including a young teenage lad returning to Llandovery college. It was after some very heavy rainfall in Wales, and the River Towy was in flood.
Cheers Dave.

hi dave you are correct about the three people drowning but the location is wrong the accident happened near the village of llangadog at the bottom of the common near a farm called defanah when comeing from llandeilo towards llandovery as you go through the hamlet of manordeilo you can see the new bridge on the righthand side it is painted grey ianto

Youv’e done me again Andrew ! our trombone was only 38/58 we used it on jobs for a local structral engineer to deliver welded beams to building sites all over the UK.We also hauled loads of long billets.Question— Did Hofa cast new rail ? I always believed that the best rail was produced at Workington Steel ,another haulier I operated ( McGuffieTransport Services) hauled a lot of rail and pig iron out of Workington in the 70’s & 80’s .Bewick also hauled many, many loads of scrap rail which was lifted off the West Coast main line . We sent it up to the north east and Sheffield where 30’ lengths were re-rolled into 60Ft. bridge rails which then went into the pits !! P.S. Probably all de-railments are caused by inferior track from S. Wales . Catch you on the ice Bewick.
JUST REMEMBER BEWICK,IF WE DID CAUSE DERAILMENTS IT’S BECAUSE WE COULD CARRY 75 FOOT LENGTHS,NOT THE JOKING LITTLE LENGTHS YOU WOULD GET ON THE BACK OF FJM 400K,CALL YOURSELF A HAULIER …WITH A D SERIES,GO AND COLLECT SOME SCRAP,SELL A HORSE AND LIVE IN A CARAVAN.

And heres me thinking you had gone to bed !! The D1000 was FJM 400F new in June 68 . The heaviest load I ever put on it was a mixed load from London to various parts of Furness and it wieghed out at 20 ton gross on the Dolly Blue bridge at Backbarrow .I tipped 6ton of Barytes and came out legal at 16ton ! I sold this motor to some cockney’s for good money in early '71. The V8 ■■■■■■■ never put a foot wrong but of course I drove it my-self and kept it immaculate( I know you think I’m ■■■■■■■■■■■■ but Im not !!) I did put some awful weights on it at times but as they say I always went "Gay canny ". However I’m not a Gypo although I have owned a lot of horses in my time and once lived in a caravan when we were re- furbing a property but I didn’t reckon much to it though . Keep your elbows in Bewick.
