South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

here’s one of jr’s from the early days.loaded with scrap.

during the early 1960’s a mate of mine alun jones, who later owned joint motorways worked for ross garages, they ran trucks aswell as being an atkinson dealer.

gwynne bowen was a fairly large operator in his day,he had a depot in gorseinon and one in warrington,he also had quite a number of out based drivers, including a few in mid-wales.i remember going to the yard in gorseinon in the early 80’s.i think they ceased trading around 1986?

another of rosser’s

j.m. watkins abergavenny ran erf’s for years.

Nice picky’s there Pete BUT alot of kingpins and bushes. Albet no one bothered about a little play before 1967. wink wink nod nod.

Hi everyone, top marks again andrew again for the CT photos, shame the allegro got in the way of a good shot of one of the old 16.280s,i remember shunting at alcan rogerstone one day and was delayed with ■■■■ hopkins, got chatting and he ended up pulling out a load of photo albums showing me all the lorrys he had with john raymond and joints,i remember him telling me he was good mates with as griffiths and was often down his yard on weekends,a couple of pictures of HH Jones timber haulage MAN.

a couple of pages back,i posted a picture of billy burton’s constructor.this is billy’s son nigel’s scania,he hauls pallets mainly.

this is a.s. griffiths’ current drive.alun has scaled his operation down over the last two years, with the way the haulage industry is,who could blame him? alun has been a good mate to me ever since i first met him in the early 70’s when he drove for j&m.

a year ago now, when i took my peterbilt for shot blasting,in robbins yard next door were the remains of these old gems.someone once told me that robbins transport had been in the haulage business for nearly 100 years.

the crusader and foden have both seen better days!

carmarthen truckshow 2008.

n&a james have done all manor of road haulage over the years.during the 70’s they ran the middle east.here is a daf they use for low loader work.

trevor g.philips of cadoxton is another distant memory from yesteryear.

Pete you are going to have me in tears looking at photos of these old South Wales 8 leggers and in particular the Gwynne Bowen Foden ! me and my mate were in Bowens yard more or less every week in the mid 60’s . Jack Reece was the traffic manager and sometimes the old mans son Vivien was in the office too. It was very rare they couldn’t fix our Octopus&trailer up with 20 ton of tinplate for Lancashire or Carlisle usually from Velindre or Trostre .If Bowens could’n’t load us Trevor Phillips from Cadoxton ? would fix us up . Those were the days ! but I am showing my age owning up to seeing those old AEC’s trundling about on locals. But Bowens was an exceptionally tidy fleet for the era.Regards Bewick

Would this be the same as Ross Garages who had a depot on Barrow road in Sheffield? I once picked one of their trunkers up in the 70s about 0600,somewhere around Monmouth,he had run out of time and left the motor in a lay-by.Didn’t they run Scanias for a bit?

not sure about ross garages northern depot,i will ask my mate he would know.here’s one for bewick.this foden may or may not have been a gwynne bowen motor.the owner i think is from malpas cheshire?i took this photo at this years dylan thomas road run.

I know Shane who drove that MAN, and it was based just down the road from me. I remember it having especially loud exhausts whereby you would hear and recognise the sound long before it came into view. Shane and his brother Karl are both still doing the round timber work.

Don’t misunderstand me Pete ! when I was a teenage trailer mate I suppose I thought the Bowen Fodens were the Dogs but I soon came to realise as an operator that Fodens had had thier day and I never ever gave them any consideration .Probably I should have tried one or two as my great grandad Thomas Bewick bought a good number of Foden steamers straight from the factory in the early 1900’s !!! Keep on posting the pics Bewick.
