I’m sure you’re right Bob - one of the development 6LXCT engines. Kenneth Wilson had one in a Foden 8-legger and W & J Riding had one in a 400 Series. Like all Riding motors it was named, fittingly in this case as “Novelty”.
the experimental gardner that was in gtg 909w,was i am sorry to say a big disapointment to lloyds.that truck when new was mainly running tin plate from metal box neath to westhoughton lancs (now a housing estate).the main problem with it as i recall was that she kept running hot and suffered all kinds of problems relating to that very early on.a good friend of mine drove it from new.i also remember dai lloyd (the owner)putting the truck into ken appleyard’s scrap yard in port talbot during the early 90’s.sorry to disapoint all the many gardner fans out there!
regards andrew
Hi everyone, great pictures and information by everyone,a couple more of cardiff transport for you, D985 SGH first of many f90s that they operated.
There was a 6 LXCT at a rally in Cheshire so we had to have a debate about them. A chap Clive Allman (ERFs Gardener 240s Fleet.and now a 525 Foden) had a ex Meaches I think.6 LXCT ERF he had trouble with it but did say. IF the engine was realeased now with the modern type synthetic oils, Things would be alot diffrent as oils have advanced alot now. I know they had done away with bushes on the camshaft and that was a mistake in a engine builders veiw.
JOHN.
A few pages back on this great thread is a photo of TDW’s marathon. Many years ago I hitched a lift if not in this one a sister to it, from Portways in Newport
docks to Chiswick roundabout. The driver telling me about Tommy etc etc and that his oldest son had quit, and moved to England.
A couple of years later I went to Ipswich to check into taking on one of Russel Davies motors and pulling containers. Although I was living in West London, being a valley boy my accent was still strong. Whilst looking over the package they had I heard in the background, someone say not another Welshman!.
I was not happy with the deal and walked away from it. Doing more research,I come to find Glyn Davies, his brotherinlaw Glyn, and John Williams, were the main men and all Welsh. They might not have been Welsh hauliers, but built up some high profile companies,Glyn Davies selling one to Securicor, and another to Wincanton. John Williams runs Maritime transport, and I just read the window of opportunity article in CM 29th Oct. Its a small World.

There was a small fleet of Atkinson 8 leggers running from Tythegston Quarry worked by a company called F. W. Chandler & Co. Ltd., to the Carbide Works at Kenfig. The works took up the area which is now Kenfig Ind Est., visible on your left as you go over the elavated section of the M4 west of J37. The long term drivers were Ray Rees and Roy Evans of Porthcawl. There are many stories that relate to this works that I will put to gether with transport details in more pics.
