Firstly what an excellent site and thread!
My grandfather and father ran a small tipper firm in Tonyrefail called AEW Haulage during the 70’s.They were midnight blue cabs and battleship grey telehoist bodies. The fleet consisted of 4 16 ton gross tippers including a BMC Mastiff with V8 Perkins, Leyland Mastiff with V8 Perkins,D1000 Ford Custom Cab with V8 and a K Series Dodge with 6354 Perkins, they were engaged on quarry work in South Wales and worked out of Glamorgan Roadstone, Forest Wood, Pontyclun. Robert Hobbs, Argoed Isha, Llanharry, English China Clays,Hendy Quarry, Miskin.
They also built up contracts running red shale from the south wales valleysto various housing sites and factories as it was considered to be better than scalpings and often gave free loadsaway as trials.(around the time of AJ Harkins).
Not a big company compared to most but played a part in the history of the building of the South Wales construction industry and were on the supply of stone for the extension of Rhoose airport.

Sadly we never took any photos of the trucks and I would love it and pay good money if anybody has any snaps of them for me to buy.The only thing I have is some of the old log books(showing a 12 months road tax for £219.00 those were the days!) and an insurance document.

I was a young 5 year old at the time but lorries are forever in my blood and I now actually own a 1974 K series Dodge with a V8 540 perkins!.

I can remember all the firms posted on here and actually worke for John Raymond in the office in the 90’s.

There were loads of tipper firms ,owner drivers in just the Tonyrefail area and surrounding Llantrisant Llanharry areas, remember any of these?

Terence Christopher (Tonyrefail)
Allan Christopher (Tonyrefail)
M&KTransport (Tonyrefail)
Ron Sibley (Tonyrefail)
Wilcox (Tonyrefail)
AllanT Rogers (Gilfach Goch)
A J Harkins
Edgar Williams (Cowbridge)
Salway and Stephens(Llanharry on the bend where Harkins yard is now)
Denzil Edwards(Cross Inn)
C B Crook(Tonteg)
Henry E Jenkins (Beddau)
Cynon Star

There must be loads more Hope this brings back some memories

me in llanwern 1988 driving e235 vep.three things to notice here:
1.look at the size of that steering wheel
2.notice the stubby eps selector
3.was i ever that slim!!!

one of a.s. griffiths’ 111’s,with a large vessel that was loaded near stuttgart.

d661 mep, after the driver had a bit of a mishap!

e235 vep, after she was turned over (not by me) tipping coal at llanwern in 1989.

m16 jmh, when brand new and driven by shrewsbury driver ron birch.

my mate stan used to drive this 143 for his father sid evans.

That MAN looks smart I always wanted one. Was they a little on the thirsty side.I had a 8 Legger on tipping work out of Buxton, It would go anywhere with the cross locks on the back axles.
