Hi finnly300,
You are doing fine,if you want them bigger, just go on where it say’s resize, you can put them to 15" or next size down. You have a few of West Midland Farmers. I remember their lorries.
Cheers Dave.

Here you are Dave more rescent pic,

Hi finnly300,
Were you a driver for WMF,you seem to have a fair few of theirs. My Dad drove for Passey Nott, from Kington. Used to see a lot WMF lorries about when with him as a kid, also when I was driving myself.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Finn,
My old man drove for Passey’s all his working life. I know Nigel and Keith who has just been made redundant off the mixe. I live right opposite the Gore at Evenjobb, known Gerald Perks since I was kid,his brother Ken who was a driver, now delivers the papers here. You must know John Minton if your on for Callow,he drove for Philpotts after my time.
Cheers Dave.

use to be where the motorcycle centre was on belmont roundabout

Hi Finnly300,
I drove an Austin FFK140 with that cab for Brisbanes of Knighton,it had the 5.7 underslung engine, pulled like a train. Its a shame all these old firms have gone, but sadly it looks as if a lot more are going to go,the way things are.
Cheers Dave.

walk to a pay phone to get the fitter to come out i expect

Your right there Dave, me dad and me will sit down and try and remember all the firms that use to come in to BOCM Leominster some nighs, and it`s unbeleivable ,thats without all the firms on general haulage thats gone.As you say it looks grim out there.

Hi finnly300,
I remember their place by Belmont island, can’t remember where else they were in Hereford, except the store in Mortimer Rd,now Countrywide. I had a lift back in 1971 from the bottom of Dinmore into Leominster,in a Bedford KM. I had hitched from Cheltenham after leaving my KM at telehoist, got out at Dinmore 417 turnoff after having a lift with one of cadbury’s,from Combe Hill, back to there, those were the days, just hold your logbook up.
Cheers Dave.

like that one Dave

Yes just the same finnly, except mine was a tipper and WMF was a flatbed, with about a 24’ body, they were a good moter in their day, would stay with anything else,at that time, even the Ford D1000 which came after them. Only thing about them was the cab, just a TK mounted on a higher wider chassis, but you felt a bit safer with the double bumper.
Cheers Dave.

I run this one now with a coupel of tractors on round the shows ex WIGGIN METAL ALLOYS Hereford ,could do with a 2 speed axle really, but nice after a week drivin the tanker

The one I drove for Philpotts, had the two speed, makes the world of difference.

here’s a few of w.g. davies landore.

more tomorrow night.

Excellent stuff Pete 359, you’ve done us proud there!! look forward to seeing more gems tommorow

Andrew tremendous photos once again. As I don’t have any myself, hopefuly you will not mind if I ask questions or comment on yours. Was W.J., W.G., and V.B. Davies related. I remember W.G. Davies’s crusaders and later sk Merc’s delivering coils into Reads/ Nancanco in Rhymney, from possibly Velindre?. From
Glyn Neath bank to Dowlais top 80% uphill and slow going. Didn’t V.B. Davies have a yard in the same village as Trevor C Phillips (maroon coloured motors)?.
Perhaps another member could help also, as I can’t seem to remember the village names, and new roads and by-pass’s have possibly been built so the yards are no longer in view.

Cheers Paul

G’day,
Top pics again fellas. I found an old magazine artice on the coal convoys to the steel works in the mid 80’s,I hope I don’t ruffle to many feathers with this one,I don’t imagine these guys were on everyones chrissy card list back then, but hey they were tough times and at the end of the day they had a family to suport too.
As a kid I remember seing one of these convoys, pretty impressive, wish I’d had my camera.

Cheers Jamie

hello boys,
v.b, w.g. and v.j.davies were all soi am told related.they started out in transport around 90 years ago,but as family and business can be most of the time, they fell out and went their seperate ways.i would imagine?most of davies’ work was sourced from the fairly large dyffryn steelworks which until 1985 was around the corner from them.robert’s transport knighton used to use w.g. davies’ yard at morriston opposite swansea steel.w.g. davies in my opinion were a very innovative company given the vehicles they ran and the corporate image they promoted.they are still very much with us now ,w.g. davies are man service agents.trevor phillips was from cadoxton near neath and the yard was on the side of the old main road.one of the fodens they ran has made it into preservation, will post pictures of it soon.great to see that trucking international article on the welsh convoy’s,i remember them well, alot of people did well out of that,i recall drivers taking home wages of £500 a week, good money in 1984/5.i took many photos, sadly i lost them when i moved house in 1990.i went as a passenger (i was only 19/20 years old then.) on the many convoys up to llanwern that was a different!thank you to everyone for the interest and positive comments,i am loving this thread.
regards andrew.
