wow mrken thanks i remember that Volvo/ Atki was it dark Blue and Red chassis■■? I used to go into Crown Cork Southall and this lorry came in one day
with a load of tin plate is that what work they would do. I put a artical on another theme about it and i think some disbeliff crept in as i had also mentioned Tideswells of Kingsley putting a 8LXB into a F88.The Carswells truck was it a Atkinson with a F88 cab fitted■■? Or a ■■■■■■■ in a F88■■ at the time i put the
message on the other site i could’nt think of Carswells name.
Thanks John.

many thanks pete. just spoke to jp on the phone. off down to pyle next week for 1 hell of a ■■■■ up with him. he wants to know where that photo was taken and he still has the foden in the yard taxed and ready to roll . thanks again mate

hi boys,
with regard to the above questions,as far as i know john mcarthy is well (several good friends of mine are employed by him).i have some photos of w.g.davies’ hino, after the original engine gave trouble she was then converted to a 290 big cam ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ of conversions caswell transport used to run alot of tinplate out of the then nearby ebbw vale steelworks, one of their early 70’s atki borderer’s had a volvo f88 cab adapted to fit on it as issac caswell then thought he had the perfect combination of cab and driveline.i wish i had pictures of that rare beast.

Hi pete 359 NO photos like wise with the Tideswells 8LXB f88. They had a Atki and a Shell tanker had taken the cab off it. They Also had a 88 with the crank gone O well good engine no cab pop engine into Volvo the back of the engine was level with back of the cab it fitted perfect. No one can remember if they used the Fuller or Volvo box. In Manchester area a chap is running a F88 wrecker whith a ■■■■■■■ its dark Red you may of seen it at a Rally.
John

Hi boys
John, Pete I remember Tidewells F88 8LXB Roy told me soon after they did it that Volvo’s would not surply them with any parts and did’nt want anything to do with them.

Regards Keith

a firm i haven’t mentioned as yet,ely transport whose yard was on the side of the main a48 into cardiff,it’s now a large b&q.here’s one of their mandator v8’sthe v8’s were on the face of it a brilliant concept.the reality was that they were a rushed bodged engine prone to overheating and all manor of problems very early on.the truck equivalent of the triumph stag!

Yea Pete they couln’t catch OJM480L either !!! cheers Bewick.

from what i gather, not much could catch ojm bewick!here’s a fairly early 110 scania that was driven by a life long driver, len tyler now retired.the 110 was owned by monarch transport from llandow,as i remember monarch didn’t last very long, these 110’s caused quite a stir when monarch replaced their atki’s with them.

whilst on the subject of classic swedish motors, this is a picture of the f88 i restored.i had a 1974 erf a series before it,what a differnce this '74 volvo was compared to a '74 erf,the erf was like driving down the road in a wickes garden shed.the volvo was quite, comfortable and good on fuel.r.i.p. the uk truck industry.

sorry, i should have written quiet, comfortable.

Wasn’t there a Cardiff haulier called Hughes, ran red AECs and what about Glyn S.John (unless he’s already been mentioned) and Rhys Jones, they were quite big.And there was Catnic from Caerphilly, they made steel lintels and were regulars on the A449/M50 and onwards. The name Hitchens rings a bell as well,Cardiff maybe? And Valley Carriers from Sully,I’ve never seen a photo of one of their motors and they were a big company.
That’s a nice picture of the Ely Transport Mandator. :sunglasses:

Hi Chris,
Did Hughes run Guy big J’s as well, there were a quite a few drivers from Kington driving for them in the early seventies, then they disappeared, never heard of the firm again.
Cheers Dave.

it looks like i could be boring everyone for a while yet,as i have photo’s of most of the companies mentioned.the “hughes” you refer to?,if they were blue marathons and erf’s from llanelli area then they later became owens road services.i dare say you have all heard of them, they must be wales largest family owned haulier.

Hi Pete and Dave.
Sorry, got the name wrong. It wasn’t Hughes it was Price from Cardiff. :unamused:
And I remember Owens from Llanelli, they were a big haulier in South Wales. Are they still going?

Would that be T.J.E Price Ltd of New Rd , Rumney , Cardiff they were Thorneycroft operators who changed to A.E.C and ran them up until the mid 1980’s

price were auctioned off with glyn john saw them all lined up on cardiff docks

this is a crusader of hughes haulage llanelli, they became owens road srvices.
