South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

here we have a guy big j4t from valley carriers, two of their drivers,…syms and neil kidby set up on their own in the early 70’s.now better known as s&k transport david davies road barry dock.mainly yellow fh’s.

pete 359:
this is a crusader of hughes haulage llanelli, they became owens road srvices.

Hi Andrew,
The Hughes I remember had red Guy big J’s,they were on steel, didn’t seem around for long, must have been taken over. None of the blokes from up our way went wiyh them, they all stayed around this area, will have to ask one of them, what happened.
Cheers Dave.

the next few images are all coal lorries,a big job a few years ago in south wales.this is one of blue line transport tondu.on the coal.

penllyne haulage were owned by a millionaire land owner from the vale of glamorgan, the whole business was engaged in coal and bulk distribution.this was the only leyland daf 95 they ever had.taken in tower colliery 1990.

joint motorways only e series erf had tipping gear and so was engaged on coal work fairly regularly, seen here coupled to the home made tipper jm44,which was a very versatile bulker having a coil well.

many welsh bulk haulage firms blossomed as a result of the regular coal related work in south wales, one of them was hirwaun based maldwyn davies, here’s one of maldwyn’s f88’s on the coal.

Would that be T.J.E Price Ltd of New Rd , Rumney , Cardiff they were Thorneycroft operators who changed to A.E.C and ran them up until the mid 1980’s

Thanks 418,thats the firm,T J E Price.I remember they ran AECs.

lyn howells was based in coychurch just outside bridgend.a regular job of their’s was delivering glengettie tea.

j&m transport were based on stormy down,on an old aerodrome next to the main a48.they ran many f88’s and some f86’s on uk,international and middle east work.(sorry about the poor picture )there is on the end of this line up ,j&m’s one and only leyland buffalo.

two of j&m’s drivers who took me on many journey’s over 30 years ago.alun griffiths and bob pearce, seen here in calais in the mid-70’s.

here’s one of j&m’s in the desert somewhere, could be taking light bulbs to baghdad,a regular j&m run in the 70’s.

written on the reverse of this photo are the words garden of eden 1976.

bob pearce driving out of the truck wash at the londra in istanbul.

turkey 1976

when alun griffiths who drove ghb 542n was suddenly taken very ill in baghdad in 1975 he was flown home straight away.alun’s mate and fellow j&m driver sid evans had to tip both loads, deck ghb and the tilt in 50deg. desert heat and drive the whole outfit back from iraq to stormy down, seen here in belgrade where the authorities were a little concerned about the rear overhang.sid being the totally unflapable character he was just took it all in his stride!

Andrew, great pics. I remember J+M as a kid. Looking at Sid’s accident earlier in the thread, didn’t that Scania belong to A.W.Griffiths of Bridgend?Would that be the Alun Griffiths with the f88.

Hi pete 359, cracking photo’s , My father Melvyn Mortimer drove for a Tony Howells in the 60’s carrying all sorts of good’s, would he of been any relation to lyn howells

hi paul and tetris, thanks for the kind words boys.yes paul ,alun griffiths left j&m and formed a.s. griffiths and sons, they did own the 111,sid bought it of alun and i think 1st trip bang!!!with regard to lyn howells,i know his brother david howells he still runs trucks now.there may be another brother.thanks again
regards andrew

a couple more of j&m’s,again sorry about the quality,on the rear of all of these it says iraq 1976.

i was told this photo was taken after one of j&m’s 290hp f88’s blew up in eastern turkey and it was then towed to iraq, after unloading, the whole outfit was then decked onto another j&m “cut down” tilt and driven by sid evans (again)from iraq to graz in austria were the engine was rebuilt.
