Hi Andrew,
I can see the quarries out of my window, other side of the valley, also hear them on th CB,the hauliers up here are being messed about just the same, think they are trying to get them all to jack it in,your chaps and these.
Cheers Dave.
hi dave, the industrial estate that we are on is at the entrance (almost) of the quarry,my understanding is that all of the tarmac franchisee’s are swamped with debt and working for nothing,i don,t mean to be rude as they like us are just hard working guys, someone somewhere is making alot more money out of them than they are!anyway here’s one for bernard.porthcawl seafront 1987 and the 1st f90 that cardiff airlines ever bought.
THANKS ANDREW,I REMEMBER WHEN THAT WAS BRAND NEW,LIKE I SAY,I SHALL WORK OUT PHOTO BUCKET AND GET SOME OF MINE ON,GOOD TO SEE SOME JOINTS PHOTOS,ESPECIALLY THE ERFS IN OLD COLOURS
hi bernard, she wasn,t very old when i took that photo, but with cardiff transport mileages were high and a 1 year old motor could look like a 2 to 3 year old motor.they really were notorious, joint motorways worked closely with them and they used to drop trailers in one anothers yards.i can recall loading coil out of their warehouse in newport for pembroke dock and seeing the 20 tonne forklift they had loading cardiff’s trucks to the gunnels!they had so much coil in the warehouse that the concrete floor broke up/cracked and collapsed under the weight.brian lewis who owned the firm retired to a yacht in marbella? ithink?

The tipper job must be horrendous now by what I hear from you lads in Wales .A lot different than when I started building the M6 over Shap with my Thames Trader on a B licence .I used to run 9" stone out of Kendal quarrie and dust back from Shap to tip on the Haul roads .I soon got sick of that for a game of cowboys !! even though you could make a decent do.But I got my first “A” licence and went back down the road on distance !! I didn’t have anything more to do with tippers until 1973/4 when we ran a couple of Bulkers on Pig Iron , coal, frag & feeding stuff ect. But they were a pain in the ■■■■ to run them amongst the flats so we kicked them into touch a couple of years later and I checked into re-hab !!! Never ever again to run tippers !!!
HI ANDREW,I WORKED AT CT FROM 1989 TILL 2004 AND USE TO WASH THE LORRYS ON THE WEEKEND WHEN I WAS 14,ME AND MY BOY WENT TO GAYDON SHOW THIS YEAR AND I SAW YOUR LORRY BUT DIDNT SEE YOU ABOUT,WAS HOPING TO HAVE A CHAT WITH YOU,SO I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS WELL

Hi Andrew,
The hauliers and drivers from down your way are ok,they and the hauliers and drivers this way are ok with one another, they are all being messed about and are in the same boat, its looking grim for all of them.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Bewick,
Its mainly tippers in this area, because apart from the Quarries there’s very little else. The problem at the moment is the management has moved to another area, the Welsh area is now merged with the West Country and the HQ is down there. A lot of the materials which were sourced from these quarries is now being sourced from other quarries, this along with the drop in the construction industry has affected the work. Then tarmac cut the rates by 2.5% from october the first,so they are all caught between a rock and a hard place. When you had your Thames Trader, you could make money,as they could here, the quarries were owned by smaller companies and not so ruthless as these big conglomerates.
Cheers Dave.
