South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

nice one dave,we have just brought our peterbilt back from a show in swansea,so here are a few from my era of driving for joint’s during the 80’s.[/img]cardiff transport,or as most steel drivers from that era knew them cardiff airlines!were a long running steel haulier, with several yards located allover the u.k.as is mentioned in another thread, they became carline around 1996/7-ish.

Hi Andrew,
Tidy pics, nice to see those firms again. I think this thread has had the kiss of life.
Cheers Dave.

thanks dave,d652 mep was a 2033 merc.double shifted from new by night man mick glover and day man cliff ashley, who was joint’s shrewsbury foreman.both these “proper drivers” put well over 650,000 km’s on that merc.inside the first 3 years of having it.joint’s had drivers living in shrewsbury and a yard their for over 30 years.

this was the only e series joint’s ever bought d675 nuh.she had a 14 litre 320 ■■■■■■■ and an eaton twin splitter.

this was my baby.new in september 1989,the only?as i recall 1748 merc on steel out of south wales, and when i had the keys for that at the age of 24 years old,boy i thought i was king of the hills.480 hp may seem nothing now,but in a gatso free, speed limiter free time it was some machine!

Hi Andrew, have you got any photo’s of Joint’s lost coil at Adforton, near wigmore?

Yes Dave, this thread has a new lease of life. Seeing the coal in the background of Tony Morgans low loader has reminded me of the tipper company’s who moved it around to blending colleries, power stations coal merchants, steel works and the docks.
Rhymney Traffic services, D.F. Stevens Tredegar,Alan Price Bargoed, Maldwyn Davies Hirwaun, W.R. Jones Rhiwderin, A.J. Harkins Llanharan, Penllyne Haulage Llandow, Ryan Transport Cardiff, Ely Transport Cardiff, Hazells later M.D.W. Haulage Newport, Clytha Transport Newport, Cosslett’s Pontypridd.
There was a company in Cardiff ran Volvo’s F86 8 wheelers and artics, dropside tippers, ran coal north mining supplies back, _ _ Morgan?.

hi andy was picking them bales up out of emr darlaston if clean went up to rotherham if comtaminated bales went to port talbot
only used to strap the front and back bales

ahhh, funny you should mention that, as i was about to post this image of the aforementioned cliff ashley standing on top of one of margam’s fine 26 tonners.the story behind it is that long serving shrewsbury driver geoff passant (now deceased)was heading back to hanwood one thursday night when, believe it or not travelling at over 50 mph in the dark he rounded a left corner and the 26 tonner went right, down the bank and as i recalled demolished a gazeboo.when i turned up every well board each weighing over 70kg.had been flung off the trailer also.on the following sunday a gang of us and two mobile cranes turned up and removed the coil from someones garden.anyone who know’s the “back road” as south wales steel drivers did and still do were astonished that geoff could do that speed on that road with a 26 tonne coil on…some of the time!r.i.p mate.

pete 359:

These used to do a lot of the big ali block out of Alcan Latchford nr Warrington when i was working out of there,
many a time you`d see the crane heading out towards Lymm to reload a 10 ton block back on the trailer

Hey John Paul you’ve missed Walters red and Green tippers are they from Penllyne.I fixed a chap up with a V 8 mandator and a mk 3 AEC 8 legger
out of their grave yard. Dose David Ash still work for Walters■■?.I like the water feature with Cliff standing on top of it.
John.

Hi Paul,
A J Harkins were the firm that ran sand coloured tippers. I have been trying to think of their name for months, used to see them in the Don Cafe top of Glynneath pitch, they didn’t hang around either, always seemed to be motering, but I was only a 21 year old on a Bedford TK at 14 ton gross in 1969.
Cheers Dave.

hi john, walters green and white bulkers are based in one of rosser’s old yards at pontlliw.penllyne haulage have long since finished, they were owned by a millionaire farmer/land owner called jeff thomas from penllyne in the vale of glamorgan and their yard was on the old aerodrome at llandow a very good mate of mine drove for them for several years.have lots of penllyne photos to post if anyone is interested,i don,t want to bore anyone.don,t know if dave ash is still at walters though, several showmen have spoken well of his mechanical skillls over the years.

Hi Andrew,
Post what ever pictures of lorries you have got, there is always someone on these forums that will be interested. I myself like to see pictures of any lorries. It brings back a few memories to see firms that I had forgot about.
That Mercedes you drove is parked on the A470 by the Beacons reservoir,if I’m not mistaken.
Cheers Dave.

thanks dave, spot on with the location,i had loaded bales from b.s.c. shotton and was on the way to the abbey when i took that.sorry if i have strayed of the thread slightly i.e. 60’s and 70’s,but i would like to think that the images are worth looking at.

Dave, I’m not sure if A.J. Harkins Llanharan is the same company you are thinking of. I only remember them running 8 wheel f86 tippers late 70’s and some nice looking f7’s early eighties. They were red with cream roofs. Iirc they never survived the miners strike, although I believe they had a couple more attempts in the business but have now packed up.
Whilst, we are down that way lets not forget Jeff Caldwalder, started on A.R.C. quarries with a couple of 6 wheel d series Fords, later got into coal and scrap metal. Got quite big at one time, no longer in business either.

Here’s another South Wales Haulier, not been mentioned as far as I know, got a fair sized fleet Hicks from Newport.

Hi Andrew,
No worries about straying. I have expanded the title of the thread,if thats ok with everyone,so post any lorries from whenever.
Cheers Dave.

pete 359:
hi dave, the chap who nearly caught his fingers in the j&m bell containers thread (billy morgan)had a son called tony morgan and around 1975 he bought this gem.believed to be the first ever marathon built, seen here on stormy down in the summer of 75 with a large very heavy face shovel body.this truck was formerley a leyland demo.and featured in the southall twighlight video amongst others.

“3300john” Thanks for the pm  The pic definetley looks like my old motor as it was seen in it’s last reincarnation also thanks again to all the fella’s who posted recent pics of ‘A95 HBU’ and a bit of it’s recent history :frowning: From all the info given It does seem that 'A95 HBU is parked up in a yard somewhere on Merseyside (Retired) and does now look very similar to the above pic of ‘Morgans’ heavy hauler.

When I had ‘A95 HBU’ it was a RHD 4 x 2 with the standard short sleeper and a ■■■■■■■ 290E ‘Big Cam’ with a Fuller 9 speed roadranger gearbox and apparently was one of the last built and was stored for a while before being registered, don’t know the full story but had no reason to disbelieve it at the time.

Thanks again ‘3300john’ and regards
Dave Penn;
