South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Leyland600:
Hi Dave & CWM, for the life of me I cannot recall the black bar you mention, the cab was quite good for sleeping in without having a bonnet in the middle. Looking in some old diarys just recently I saw that the first load I ever carried on the BMC was 11 tons of pit props from a wood adjacent to Penrith Golf course which certainly made it struggle over Stainmoor on the A66. This came as quite a shock having been used to the Leyland 600 powered double deckers of Ribble. Two drops at collieries in the Mansfield area in December 1962 then loaded 3 transformers off Silver Roadways at Brush,s Loughborough for Castle Green, Kendal and a few pallets of tin plate from Metal Box at Sutton in Ashfield to MB at Carlisle. The load netted £38, I thought I was going to make my fortune in a year, “poor misguided soul !!” mind you 500 gallons of bulk diesel was only £106.
The Good Old Days.

Cheers . L600.

Hi L600,
I think the bar was fitted for the passengers on the double seat as a grab rail.As Roy CWM says it was good for hanging a coat on,as those FHK140’s had a good heater.I enjoyed driving the one I had for about eight months as it had everything you wanted in those days power steering a two speed axle and power plus a good heater.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dennis have you ever had one of these crack up in reverse you had to bash them into gear and let the clutch out sharpish to stop the engine or they would self-destruct seemingly the pull stop didn’t work when the engine was running backwards and also the governer didn’t control things either only supposed to be that particular Perkins that did it, a pal of mine who I know drove them and he said it happened frequently when rolling back a tad with the motor in a forward gear, bloody hell where did I dredge that up from ■■.
thanks harry long retired.

more useless info, these Seddon mk5s were the first lorries to be designed as Diesel only, no petrol option offered, vehicles in this weight
range approx 6tonners, from Albion, Dodge, Guy, Thornycroft, Dennis, Leyland Austin/Morris, Bedford, Commer etc etc, all offered
petrol engines, in the mid 50s Ford, Bedford, Austin/Morris, fitted as many as 50% of their lorries with petrol power, Diesels started to replace the petrol units from about 1957/8, operators now getting used to the new fangled Diesels,
The Seddon mk5 also used Moss gearboxes and rear axles, the less said about these the better.
Lynxman
