South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

hi all,
gwynne bowen of gorseinon and warrington,a big foden user in his day.rare to see a leyland :sunglasses: .

Hello Harry, Regarding engines running in reverse I encountered this phenomenom on two occassions both in snow & ice conditions, the first time was with my unladen S 80 cabbed Foden 8 wheel bulk blower at Lowther Castle trying to get back out onto the hard road after delivering a bulk load of broiler mash adjacent to the castle, driving up the rising gradient until it started skidding on virgin snow, I let the wagon run back a few yards and had another go getting a little further up the hill repeating this manoevre a few times until at one time I lifted the clutch a fraction too early when travelling in reverse, this stopped the Gardner and turned it in reverse hence it breathed via the exhaust and exhausted via the air cleaner. I managed to stop it immediately and start again with the starter in the correct rotation… This happened again the following winter while attempting to climb a farm lonning near Moniave in Dumfrieshire in the snow but I was a little wiser by now. Foden,s Carlisle depot lads told me later that I was lucky to be able to stop it and often the only way is to disconnect the main fuel feed pipe on a Gardner.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Hi Andrew , but that is probably an Albion . On the ergomatic cabs , the centre rear cab window was left blank on Albion models . Gwynne Bowen of course had a few L A D cab Albions and the odd Dodge . regards keith

Hi,
I remember being in John Raymond’s yard in the early80’s when a Gardner powered sa400 backed under a loaded trailer and just at the point where the unit took up the weight, the 180 made a really weird noise and at the rear of the cab where the air cleaner housing was, there were exhaust fumes coming out.i really was amazed and had never heard/witnessed this before.i am told that certain two stroke motorbike engine suffer from this also.
Regards Andrew.

HI ,B I B S . Are you big Ken used to be with Jones Flint .Barry Waddy

Hi every body, not many mentions or photos of old Llanelli firms on this site.
The likes of Hughes haulage, Barrie Williams, Morfa transport, W.North tspt, John Evans, Evans tspt. ty fri farm,
Colin Jones (Bynea). All fair sized hauliers of the day. I have some 80s photos but havn’t got a clue how to upload them. ?
Llanelli was a big industrial town till the demise of the Duport steelworks, Copperworks, and many more. Surely some photos , memories have survived .
