Hi all
I posted this on the scrapbook memories site and thought it would be suitable here.
Pictures of the Hoover fleet from the 60s and earlier.
alangeorge.co.uk/hoover_washing_machines.htm.
You need to scroll down a few pictures and the click on the link.
Has anyone got any photos of the Hoover fleet of the 70s when they ran the Mandators?
Best Regards
Alyn

Hi Dave,
I have never ever come across anyone else who has driven or operated a BMC FHK 140 in 50 years since I started my business in 1962 with such a wagon. As you say it was not a bad little wagon I got three years good servive out of mine and as you say always had 10 tons on its back, I hauled out of Carrs Flour Mills at Silloth (flour & provender) Spillers & Ranks Newcastle and BOCM at Selby, Manchester and Glasgow. This was mixed with outloads of chemicals and engineering products bringing feeding stuffs back to ■■■■■■■■■■■■■ were happy days with none of todays red tape, thank god I am no longer involved in haulage although I bought an ERF 64G and restored it after I retired to replicate a 66GX 6 wheeler I ran in the early 1970s.
I am new to this site and just finding my way around but it is certainly very interesting.
Regards, Leyland 600.

Good to see you on here Leyland600,as you say the FHK140 was a good lorry, much better than the Bedford TK’s which I also drove. My Dad drove one hauling animal feedstuff from Avonmouth and Cardiff in the 60’s and they had a good throaty sound to them. The one I drove was a tipper, but once the plating came in the payload wasn’t enough.I had a Cairn Terrier that used to come with me sometimes and hooked his front legs over the bar on the passenger side.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Leyland 600 and Dave,
My father bought a new Austin FHK 140 , reg. no. MJM 54 in 1964 , to replace a 1960 FFK 140 .
As a youngster , I travelled many thousands of miles in that wagon during school holidays.
It was the first wagon I drove , about 12 years of age , on farm roads , hay fields, etc …
I too can remember the funny-shaped black bar on the passenger side in the cab. The main use it got was for hanging wet coats .
Like all the other FHK s , it suffered from engine overheating problems , but other than that , it gave good service .
In July 1971 , it was replaced by a new Leyland Boxer 1200 , fitted with the B.M.C. engine in the reverted design.
Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Hi There
Worked for Hoovers from 1973 to1979, when BRS took over. Cliff Ward and Bill Fennell were there. Both are still with us. Saw the 2 of them a few weeks ago in the funeral of Stan Gregory, another Hoover driver.
Best Regards
Alyn

hi barry,
thanks for sharing your photos.pictures like these are the best .
Hi Dave & CWM, for the life of me I cannot recall the black bar you mention, the cab was quite good for sleeping in without having a bonnet in the middle. Looking in some old diarys just recently I saw that the first load I ever carried on the BMC was 11 tons of pit props from a wood adjacent to Penrith Golf course which certainly made it struggle over Stainmoor on the A66. This came as quite a shock having been used to the Leyland 600 powered double deckers of Ribble. Two drops at collieries in the Mansfield area in December 1962 then loaded 3 transformers off Silver Roadways at Brush,s Loughborough for Castle Green, Kendal and a few pallets of tin plate from Metal Box at Sutton in Ashfield to MB at Carlisle. The load netted £38, I thought I was going to make my fortune in a year, “poor misguided soul !!” mind you 500 gallons of bulk diesel was only £106.
The Good Old Days.
Cheers . L600.
Hi Pete, This Leyland Retriever is Caithness registered do you have any idea who it belonged too originally ? The Retriever was a good pokey motor.
I would guess that this wagon was engaged on fish haulage south and would guess it may have belonged to William Hendry from Wick or Jappy,s from Helmsdale. Anyone out there can shed any light on the subject.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
