South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Visited my dad today and he got on about the old days.He said Sharps from Barnsley had 2shunters in the bar and section at Cardiff. They were called billy Tapper and George(couldnt recall his surname). He believes that one or both may have driven for Nicholls…he also remembers getting loads from John Evans especially Armco.A Roland J mason was something to do with John Evans aswell. My dad was at Sharpies from mid 70s all through the 80s. thanks.

Heres a couple more ive obtained of Glyn John

I have an appeal via Dai Echo from SteveLDV for any pictures or info on Welsh North road federation pigeon transport, 1960-1986. Bedford Marsden, artics and a chinese 6.

Can anyone add any input on the subject?
Neil.

I remember seeing loads of lorries carrying various pigeon clubs birds on the motorways in the 1960’s.Still see the odd trailer behind a hired unit.I expect there aren’t so many clubs around since the demise of the mining communities.
Sorry Neil haven’t any pics.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Out of diesel, never once aged 21 to 65 did I commit such an offence the nearest I ever got to running out was when down the South West and very close to running out limped to a filling station and they didn’t sell derv so being worldly wise I purchased a five gallon can of paraffin strongly against the advice of the forecourt attendant bunged it in the tank and it was more than enough to get me the 20 odd miles to our depot, now that was a case of teaching an old dog new tricks the guy stood in the gateway of the garage waiting for me to come to a halt but a trick I’d learned from an older hand many years before came in very useful, it was my BRS era so running out of juice was a disiplinary offence in those days being that there was so many fuelling points there was no excuse for running out.The old Bristol seemed to relish the different brew and performed well, didn’t dare claim for the extra expense though.
thanks harry long retired.

So, here are a few snaps taken by George Ward and sent to me for our enjoyment,of the 2011 Steelboys run on this wet Sunday evening…or as you can see , for the first time I can remember, a wet Gaydon!
enjoy…and smell those diesel fumes…!(http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/yy234/steelboyf10/SteelBoys171.jpg[/IMG![](http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/yy234/steelboyf10/SteelBoys175.jpg[/IMG![](http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/yy234/steelboyf10/SteelBoys153.jpg[/IMG![](http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/yy234/steelboyf10/SteelBoys15.jpg) Thats all folks!)))

Although I never worked in the transport industry, back in 1968/70 I owned a very tired Ford 400E van with the Perkins 4.99 Diesel
engine and occasionally I would collect pigeons from the local valleys, and take them to meet the transporter, that would take them as far North as Thurso and Elgin, Iwould meet them at The Tylers Arms Llangynwyd or At a pub car park in Pencoed, where the Coop
store is now. The trailer I believe belonged to the South Wales Pigeon Federation, and at that time Traction was Provided by
Will Hall of Heol-y-cyw, A motley collection of t/units were used, frequently braking down, Brian hall was constantly in attendance
keeping the wheels turning, I recall them using a Dennis Maxim fitted with a V6 ■■■■■■■ Vale lump, ex Brewery, Charringtons
I believe. also L.A.D. Comet, sounded as sweet as a nut, but was always in trouble, on one occasion Will towed the Leyland and
trailer to start it, with his 3 Litre Alvis , apparently duff batteries, Will told the driver when you park it, park   it on a hill, let gravity do the rest, and they were bound for John o Groats
Enough Rubbish for now, cheers Lynxman

once the fitter and his lap top turned up,it was all sorted.

HI Pete 359. Alf Parry and sons were dark Blue after they sold there yard to Summerfields super market they reduced the fleet to abount 6 and concentrated on steel out of Shotton .I think they moved to pentry in Sandycroft but the yard could noi be seen from the main road .Malcome the grand son ran them after his father Stan passed away ,but his heart was never in haulage so when Shoiton stopped producing steel he packed in i dont remember any forign motors in the fleet only ERF FODEN AND SEDDON ATKI .THERE was another haulier carring out of Shotton with light blue and grey D A F Stan Hourd of Mollington could see there yard on left going to the M 56 .THE only other one ran a lot of Volvo and still is today are Sunhill .A SDA is the big one on the right hand side as you start pulling up the duel carageway to wards the A 5 5 hope this will help you rember .My old grey cells are going since i have been put out to grass yours Barry Waddy
